Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln-Douglas Debates, 1858: Galesburg, Illinois, Oct 7, 1858; Excerpts From Newspapers and Other Sources, From the Files of the Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection As to the alleged inconsistency in his speeches, Lincoln denied that there was any ground for such a charge. But the Judge will have it, he said, that if we do not confess that there is a sort of inequality be tween the white and black races which justifies us in making them slaves, we must, then, insist that there is a degree of equality that requires us to make them our wives. He had never manifested any impatience, he proceeded to explain, with the necessities springing from the actual presence of black people, and the actual existence of slavery in' the South, but had maintained that in legislating for new coun tries where slavery did not exist, there was no just rule other than that of moral and abstract right - the rule of the Declara tion of Independence that all people have a right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This was not to be misunder stood, he said, except by men interested to misunderstand it. Granting that such a view could not be announced in a certain section of the country, he asked: Is it the true test of the soundness of a doctrine that in some places people won't let you proclaim it? Then 'he made a prediction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln at the Climax of the Great Lincoln-Douglas Joint Debate in Galesburg, Illinois: Delivered at Galesburg, Illinois, on the 6th Day of October, 1928, on the 70th Anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, From a Platform Erected on the Spot Where the Original Debate Was Held, Upon the Campus of Knox College Are you relying upon that great Commoner, Henry Clay - are you actually affirming that Henry Clay has inspired you - and that you are but carrying out Henry Clay's beliefs and policies as to Slavery? Hear what Mr. Clay had to say when he was once answering an Objec tion to the Colonization Society, that it had a tendency to the ultimate emancipation Of the slaves - Clay said that 'those who would repress all tendencies to liberty and ultimate emancipation must do more than put down the benevolent efforts Of the Colonization Society, - they must go back to the era of our liberty and independence, and muzzle the cannon that thunders its annual joyous return; they must blot out the moral lights around us; they must penetrate the human soul, and eradicate the light of reason and the love Of liberty.' And I do think, says Lincoln, I repeat - that Judge Douglas, and whoever, like him, teaches that the negro has no share, humble though it may be, in the Declaration of Independence, is going back to the era Of our liberty and independence, and, so far as in him lies, is muzzling the cannon that thunders its annual joyous return; that he is blowing out the moral lights around us, when he contends that whoever wants slaves has a right to hold them; that he is penetrating, so far as lies in his power, the human soul, and eradicating the light Of reason and the love of liberty, when he is in every possible way preparing the public mind, by his vast influence, for making the institution of slavery perpetual. Book The Complete Lincoln Douglas Debates of 1858

Download or read book The Complete Lincoln Douglas Debates of 1858 written by Abraham Lincoln and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991-05-28 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lincoln-Douglas debates remain our culture's model of what public political debate ought to be. This new edition of the complete transcripts of the debates and eyewitness interpretations of them (previously published under the title Created Equal?) includes a new Foreword by David Zarefsky. Zarefsky analyzes the rhetoric of the speeches, showing how Lincoln and Douglas chose their arguments and initiated a debate that shook the nation. Their eloquent, statesmanlike discussion of the morality of slavery illustrates the masterful use of rhetorical strategies and tactics in the public forum: a form of discourse that has nearly disappeared from the political scene today.
