Book excerpt: If what you do in life makes you who you are, then I would recommend going to war anytime! Of course, that was just one of the things I've done in my life, and it only consumed one year of it- yet I feel changed by it. This book contains stories that I thought would be both interesting and hopefully entertaining, and because of that, - a military rarity. Now I know very well from both first-hand experience and second-hand learning that war is a terrible thing! Nobody wins! People die in war; there's no way around it. It shouldn't happen, and it probably wouldn't if we sent each of the country's leaders to fight it out amongst themselves, or perhaps they could just have a gentleman's duel and get it over with! Ten paces, turn, and ha; we won. Let's go home! But, I decided to put this together because, yes, I thought it would be funny, but also because I wanted to share the camaraderie and pleasantries that happen behind fire. Stress can bring people together, making lasting friendships and it's those friendships that make it all survivable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone from baby boomers to millennials who appreciates sarcasm will laugh out loud at the stories and often relatable life experiences of Eigel, as they are representative of American life. This is the first book in the ToiletureTM Series. Toileture is a term Eigel has coined that defines the stories as: Literature in short form that can be read during one "sitting". These anecdotes and stories are not moderated by political correctness. So, enjoy and take no offense, for certainly none is intended. As Mark Twain famously opined, "Life is short, break the rules. Forgive quickly, kiss slowly. Love truly. Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that makes you smile." [faint] Praise for THE LIGHTER SIDE OF LIFE "This book was not reviewed nor read by JEFF FOXWORTHY. He probably would not have liked it." --Anonymous "Eigel dishonors the legacy of Star Trek and tarnishes the iconic uniform of a Starship Captain." --What WILLIAM SHATNER likely would say, had he seen the Author photo "I love these stories, they are so well crafted. I don't like the drinking parts though; why do you have to tell those parts?" --SUZANNE, Eigel's Mother "I haven't read these yet... I lived them, why do I have to read them?" --MAUREEN, Eigel's Wife Eigel grew up loving the likes of Lewis Grizzard and Paul Harvey and having a passion for the written word. Starting in 1996, he began writing an annual Christmas letter to be the antithesis of the typical letters. Self-deprecating humor and sarcasm were the impetus of his stories: real, embellished, or made up out of whole cloth. Those and many more are now compiled in this first book of Toileture. In addition to this book, he has written a biographical novella about his Father-in-law's experiences up to and through WWII, including the remarkable reuniting of four separated brothers following the Battle of the Bulge titled: 18 Hours in Liège--a Soldier's Story.

Book excerpt: The Lighter Side is a collection of humorous, yet meaningful observations about life and faith, including "Windshield Wiper Wisdom," "The Young and the Waistless, the Old and the Beautiful," and "The Joy of Sox." "With his trademark self-deprecating humor and insights that are at once pastoral and prophetic, Brett Younger's columns are Grady Nutt Meets Dave Barry Meets Zephaniah." -Julie Pennington-Russell, Senior Pastor First Baptist Church, Decatur, GA. "Throughout my life, I have found that the ability to see a bit of humor in even the most difficult of circumstances has been a 'grace gift' that has stood me in good stead. Anne Lamott calls laughter 'carbonated holiness.' I am delighted to have Brett's 'humorously holy' ramblings gathered into one spirit-lifting volume." -Clarissa Stirckland, Networking Specialist, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship "Brett Younger is one the funniest people I know. And, he's a Baptist preacher. Now that's funny." -Bert Montgomery, Author, Teacher, Minister "Brett Younger reminds me of the late, great Grady Nutt. He's a witty humorist who deploys laughter in service of divine insight. Just when you think you're guffawing at his insanely imaginative observations, you realize you're staring straight into God's own truth." -Marv Knox, Editor, Baptist Standard

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller from “one of America’s most hilarious and provocative writers . . . a volatile brew of one-liners and vitriol” (Time). Renowned for his cranky conservative humor, P. J. O’Rourke runs hilariously amok in this book, tackling the death of communism; his frustration with sanctimonious liberals; and Saddam Hussein in a series of classic dispatches from his coverage of the 1991 Gulf War. On Kuwait City after the war, he comments, “It looked like all the worst rock bands in the world had stayed there at the same time.” On Saddam Hussein, O’Rourke muses: “He’s got chemical weapons filled with . . . with . . . chemicals. Maybe he’s got The Bomb. And missiles that can reach Riyadh, Tel Aviv, Spokane. Stock up on nonperishable foodstuffs. Grab those Diet Coke cans you were supposed to take to the recycling center and fill them with home heating oil. Bury the Hummel figurines in the yard. We’re all going to die. Details at eleven.” And on the plague of celebrity culture, he notes: “You can’t shame or humiliate modern celebrities. What used to be called shame and humiliation is now called publicity.” Mordant and utterly irreverent, this is a modern classic from one of our great political satirists, described by Christopher Buckley as being “like S. J. Perelman on acid.” “Mocking on the surface but serious beneath . . . When it comes to scouting the world for world-class absurdities, O’Rourke is the right man for the job.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review “The funniest writer in America.” —The Wall Street Journal

Book The Battle Between the Frogs and the Mice

Download or read book The Battle Between the Frogs and the Mice written by A. E. Stallings and published by Paul Dry Books. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A virtuosic, witty, charming translation of the greatest epic ever written about mice, with wonderful illustrations by Grant Silverstein. Stallings’ elegant rhyming couplets are the perfect choice to honor the mousy Muse."—Emily Wilson, Professor of Classics, University of Pennsylvania From the award-winning poet and translator A. E. Stallings comes a lively new edition of the ancient Greek fable The Battle between the Frogs and the Mice. Originally attributed to Homer, but now thought to have been composed centuries later by an unknown author, The Battle is the tale of a mouse named Crumbsnatcher who is killed by the careless frog King Pufferthroat, sparking a war between the two species. This dark but delightful parable about the foolishness of war is illustrated throughout in striking drawings by Grant Silverstein. The clever introduction is written from the point of view of a mouse who argues that perhaps the unknown author of the fable is not a human after all: “Who better than a mouse, then, to compose our diminutive, though not ridiculous, epic, a mouse born and bred in a library, living off lamp oil, ink, and the occasional nibble of a papyrus, constantly perched on the shoulder of some scholar or scholiast of Homer, perhaps occasionally whispering in his ear? Mouse, we may remember, is only one letter away from Muse.” "[Stallings] couplets . . . have a lively, nimble music that should captivate modern ears . . . Providing an earthy, oboe-like obligato to Ms. Stallings's airs are the illustrations of Grant Silverstein, cross-hatched sketches that multiply like mice on the page . . . The Battle, in which beans are happily worn rather than eaten, still has the power to delight."—Wall Street Journal A. E. Stallings is an American poet who has lived in Athens, Greece since 1999. She studied Classics at the University of Georgia, and later at Oxford University. She has published four collections of poetry, Archaic Smile (which won the 1999 Richard Wilbur Award), Hapax (recipient of the Poets’ Prize), Olives (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award), and Like (a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry). Her translation of Lucretius (into rhyming fourteeners), The Nature of Things, was called by Peter Stothard in the TLS “One of the most extraordinary classical translations of recent times.” Grant Silverstein is an American artist who specializes in etchings of a narrative character and in studies of figures, landscapes, and animals. With his wife and two cats, he spends winters holed up in his studio in rural Pennsylvania, where he uses a catch and release system for visiting mice and the occasional frog. Come spring, he ventures forth to display his work at outdoor festivals; he feels fortunate to have made his living this way for forty years. He has illustrated two previous Paul Dry Books titles, Davey McGravy by David Mason and The Verb 'To Bird' by Peter Cashwell.
