Book The Lady from the Black Lagoon

Download or read book The Lady from the Black Lagoon written by Mallory O'Meara and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This acclaimed biography shines a light on a trailblazing woman who created a classic movie monster—and the author’s quest to rescue her from obscurity. As a teenager, Mallory O’Meara was thrilled to discover that one of her favorite movies, Creature from the Black Lagoon, featured a monster designed by a woman, Milicent Patrick. But while Patrick should have been hailed as a pioneer in the genre, there was little information available about her. As O’Meara discovered, Patrick’s contribution had been claimed by a jealous male colleague and her career had been cut short. No one even knew if she was still alive. As a young woman working in the horror film industry, O’Meara set out to right the wrong, and in the process discovered the full, fascinating story of an ambitious, artistic woman ahead of her time. Patrick’s contribution to special effects proved to be just the latest chapter in a remarkable, unconventional life, from her youth growing up in the shadow of Hearst Castle, to her career as one of Disney’s first female animators. And at last, O’Meara discovered what really had happened to Patrick after The Creature’s success, and where she went. A true-life detective story and a celebration of a forgotten feminist trailblazer, Mallory O’Meara’s The Lady from the Black Lagoon establishes Patrick in her rightful place in film history while calling out a Hollywood culture where little has changed since. Book excerpt: The white man, leaning with both arms over the roof of the little house in the stern of the boat, said to the steersman-"We will pass the night in Arsat's clearing. It is late."The Malay only grunted, and went on looking fixedly at the river. The white man rested his chin on his crossed arms and gazed at the wake of the boat. At the end of the straight avenue of forests cut by the intense glitter of the river, the sun appeared unclouded and dazzling, poised low over the water that shone smoothly like a band of metal. The forests, sombre and dull, stood motionless and silent on each side of the broad stream. At the foot of big, towering trees, trunkless nipa palms rose from the mud of the bank, in bunches of leaves enormous and heavy, that hung unstirring over the brown swirl of eddies. In the stillness of the air every tree, every leaf, every bough, every tendril of creeper and every petal of minute blossoms seemed to have been bewitched into an immobility perfect and final. Nothing moved on the river but the eight paddles that rose flashing regularly, dipped together with a single splash; while the steersman swept right and left with a periodic and sudden flourish of his blade describing a glinting semicircle above his head. The churned-up water frothed alongside with a confused murmur. And the white man's canoe, advancing upstream in the short-lived disturbance of its own making, seemed to enter the portals of a land from which the very memory of motion had forever departed.

It has been her life's goal to become a soldier in the guard, and princess-sitting doesn't really fit into her plan—especially when that princess's aggravating boyfriend is always hanging around. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's easy to understand why Sherman's Lagoon has captured a considerable national following--and this number includes children as well as adults." --Mount Airy News As the title of this Sherman's Lagoon collection would indicate, creator Jim Toomey is not overly concerned about his strip being politically correct. "Nothing is above ridicule," says Toomey. Poodle: The Other White Meat is filled with the no-holds-barred humor that has made Sherman's Lagoon an international success. The popular cartoon takes a lighthearted yet satirical look at pop culture through the eyes of its namesake character, Sherman, the dim-witted but fun-loving shark. While the strip centers around the adventures of Sherman, his fellow underwater brethren are good for great laughs as well. There’s: *Fillmore, the leading shark's trusty turtle sidekick; *Megan, Sherman's significant-shark-other; *Hawthorne, the cranky hermit crab who lives in a beer can; *Ernest, a computer-hacking pop philosopher; *And a host of other silly sea creatures that inhabit the lagoon just off the make-believe South Pacific island of Kapupu. Sherman is, shall we say, not the sharpest fishing hook in the tackle box. One minute he exasperates Fillmore with nonsensical ideas like videotaping every moment of his day in case something happens. Then, when something really does occur--the arrival of space aliens--Fillmore later discovers that all that was documented was the back of the camera's lens cap! And so it goes with the irreverent cast of characters featured in Poodle: The Other White Meat. This Sherman's Lagoon collection offers a knee-slapping good time for readers of all ages--if only fish had knees.

Book excerpt: In Hausa culture, you always begin telling a story in the same way: The storyteller says, “Ga ta nan ga ta nanku!” “I am about to begin!” And the children respond, “Tazo Mujita!” “We are all ears!” Using story as the primary learning, teaching and engagement tool, the Zongo Story Project strives to elevate proficiencies in oral, written, and visual forms of literacy; promote the knowledge building of local history, local culture and local contemporary concerns; and lay the crucial foundation for the acquisition of vital twenty-first century critical thinking skills. The conceptual framework for this project originated out of a larger, community-based initiative called the Zongo Water Project, whose mission is to use water as a way to improve the quality of life for the Zongo. Working closely with local teachers, Emily Williamson carried out a series of educational workshops at the Hassaniyya Quranic School in the summers of 2012, 2013, and 2014 to teach students about local water and environmental concerns. Employing the story as the foundational element, Emily engaged students in dialogue, shared readings, performances, writing exercises, and visual art, culminating in community drama performances and original folktales. The illustrations and text of this book grew directly out of the work produced in these workshops.

Book My Sister from the Black Lagoon

Download or read book My Sister from the Black Lagoon written by Laurie Fox and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was born into a mentally ill family. My sister was the officially crazy one, but really we were all nuts." So begins My Sister from the Black Lagoon, Laurie Fox's incandescent novel of growing up absurd. Lorna Person's tale is wrested from the shadows cast by her sister, Lonnie, whose rages command the full attention of her parents. Their San Fernando Valley household is off-key and out of kilter, a place where Lonnie sees evil in the morning toast and runs into the Burbank hills to join the animals that seem more like her kin. Lorna, on the other hand, is an acutely sensitive girl who can't relate to Barbie. "Could Barbie feel sorrow? Could Barbie understand what it's like to be plump, lonely, Jewish?" My Sister from the Black Lagoon is a wisecracked bell jar, a heartbreaking study of sane and crazy. Laurie Fox's delightful voice is knowing yet wide-eyed, lyrical, and witty.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multidisciplinary volume comprehensively reviews our current knowledge of the effects of urban, industrial and agricultural pollution on the biology of shallow coastal marine lagoons. All the authors are internationally recognized authorities and have had many years of experience in their respective fields. The major strength of this volume is that it integrates several fields of research including biogeochemistry, marine microbiology, marine algology and marine zoology. By adopting such a strategy the reader is provided with a clear insight of the key processes involved in lagoon eutrophication and dystrophy and their impact on the different biological communities which live in such environments. This book will therefore provide an essential reference work for environmental biologists, ecologists, microbiologists and those involved in the management and commercial exploitation of these economically important ecosystems.

Download or read book The House on the Lagoon written by Rosario Ferré and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the National Book Award: “A family saga in the manner of Gabriel García Márquez,” set in Puerto Rico, from an extraordinary storyteller (The New York Times Book Review). This riveting, multigenerational epic tells the story of two families and the history of Puerto Rico through the eyes of Isabel Monfort and her husband, Quintín Mendizabal. Isabel attempts to immortalize their now-united families—and, by extension, their homeland—in a book. The tale that unfolds in her writing has layers upon layers, exploring the nature of love, marriage, family, and Puerto Rico itself. Weaving the intimate with the expansive on a teeming stage, Ferré crafts a revealing self-portrait of a man and a woman, two fiercely independent people searching for meaning and identity. As Isabel declares: “Nothing is true, nothing is false, everything is the color of the glass you’re looking through.” A book about freeing oneself from societal and cultural constraints, The House on the Lagoon also grapples with bigger issues of life, death, poverty, and racism. Mythological in its breadth and scope, this is a masterwork from an extraordinary storyteller.
