Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Other Days, Vol. 2 of 2: Seen Through the Wrong End of an Opera Glass At Marseilles, Mario found friends who advised him to go to Paris rather than to Spain, as he had originally intended when leaving Genoa. The lines diverge. It was not yet intended by fate, luck, or whatever mysterious power might be believed to have influenced their movements. That the two should see each other. Giulia Grisi had already sung with great success in Italy. After making her début at Bologna (strange to say in the contralto part of Emma in Rossini's opera Zelmira she had appeared at Florence and then at Milan, her native city. At the famous theatre, La Scala, in Milan, she had created a furore, and had turned the scale in favour Of an opera for ever afterwards to be identified with her name. The first night it was performed Norma trembled in the balance of public opinion, although Pasta was the heroine. (6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light of Other Days, Vol. 1 of 2: Seen Through the Wrong End of an Opera Glass Addison, with his family, takes possession of the rooms we have hitherto occupied, my father, with the privilege, I suppose, of the moneyed partner, moving into a private house. I can use the opera-glass myself now, and tell you what I see through it - Albion Street, Hyde Park. Tyrone Power, the Irish comedian, lives next door to us; Sir 'henry Bishop, the composer, lower down and the Archers, who later on are to be very closely related to Mr. And Mrs. Kendal of the present day, have a house in the same street. There's a garden behind our dwelling from which we can get into the green fields beyond; over the side-wall the Power children and my sister and I are continually climbing, and as often getting into disgrace for doing so. Book excerpt: A first-hand chronicle of Wolseley’s expedition to end Riel’s Red River Rebellion by a remarkable trio embedded on the mission. In the spring of 1870, two reporters set off from Toronto to cover one of the biggest stories in Canadian history: Colonel Garnet Wolseley’s 1870 expedition to Red River. Over the course of six months, the Daily Telegraph’s Robert Cunningham and the Globe’s Molyneux St. John brought readers along as they paddled and portaged alongside the expedition’s 1,100 troops and 400 voyageurs and guides from the shores of Lake Superior to Fort Garry. But that’s not the whole story. Buried well below the fold was the fact that St. John’s wife — international burlesque star Kate Ranoe — accompanied him and the expedition, and not just as an adventurer. Owing to an accident early on, Ranoe ended up ghostwriting many of St. John’s stories. Embedded is the remarkable story of two reporters and one extraordinary woman as they journeyed to Red River with Colonel Garnet Wolseley and his expeditionary force.

Book Music in the British Provinces 1690 1914

Download or read book Music in the British Provinces 1690 1914 written by Peter Holman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period covered by this volume, roughly from Purcell to Elgar, has traditionally been seen as a dark age in British musical history. Much has been done recently to revise this view, though research still tends to focus on London as the commercial and cultural hub of the British Isles. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that by the mid-eighteenth century musical activity outside London was highly distinctive in terms of its reach, the way it was organized, and its size, richness, and quality. There was an extraordinary amount of musical activity of all sorts, in provincial theatres and halls, in the amateur orchestras and choirs that developed in most towns of any size, in taverns, and convivial clubs, in parish churches and dissenting chapels, and, of course, in the home. This is the first book to concentrate specifically on musical life in the provinces, bringing together new archival research and offering a fresh perspective on British music of the period. The essays brought together here testify to the vital role played by music in provincial culture, not only in socializing and networking, but in regional economies and rivalries, demographics and class dynamics, religion and identity, education and recreation, and community and the formation of tradition. Most important, perhaps, as our focus shifts from London to the regions, new light is shed on neglected figures and forgotten repertoires, all of them worthy of reconsideration.
