Book excerpt: From the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender comes the instant USA Today and New York Times bestselling novel starring Avatar Kyoshi—now in paperback! Written in consultation with Michael Dante DiMartino, the visionary cocreator and executive producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra animated TV series. Justice begins with one woman. After nine years of desperate searching for the next Avatar, the discovery of young, charming Avatar Yun has brought stability to the four nations—that is, until Earth Kingdom-born Kyoshi, Yun’s unassuming friend and servant, demonstrates remarkable bending during a mission to the South Pole. With the identity of the true Avatar at stake and the growing unrest among her allies turning into violence, Kyoshi is forced to flee the Avatar mansion with her fiery friend Rangi, taking little more than the metal war fans and headdress her parents left behind. It isn’t easy finding Avatar training on the run, but Kyoshi and Rangi find unlikely supporters in the daofei: ragtag criminals and outlaws living in the shadows of the Earth Kingdom. Torn between following the traditional path of an Avatar and seeking vengeance for those she has lost, Kyoshi struggles to accept her newfound power as she trains in secret. But while Kyoshi, Rangi, and her daofei friends face off against brutal underworld rivals, those who seek to control the Avatar draw ever closer to her, leaving trails of the dead in their wake. The story behind the longest-living Avatar in the history of this beloved world, The Rise of Kyoshi maps Kyoshi’s journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice still feared and admired centuries after becoming the Avatar. “Yee artfully weaves in political entanglements as well as complex cultural identities to fully immerse readers in Kyoshi’s world. . . . An action-packed tale that answers some long-awaited questions; fans will look forward to the promised sequel.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book Enchantment and Disenchantment

Download or read book Enchantment and Disenchantment written by Wai-yee Li and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a famous episode of the eighteenth-century masterpiece The Dream of the Red Chamber, the goddess Disenchantment introduces the hero, Pao-yü, to the splendors and dangers of the Illusory Realm of Great Void. The goddess, one of the divine women in Chinese literature who inspire contradictory impulses of attachment and detachment, tells Pao-yü that the purpose of his dream visit is "disenchantment through enchantment," or "enlightenment through love." Examining a range of genres from different periods, Wai-yee Li reveals the persistence of the dialectic embodied by the goddess: while illusion originates in love and desire, it is only through love and desire that illusion can be transcended. Li begins by defining the context of these issues through the study of an entire poetic tradition, placing special emphasis on the role of language and of the feminine element. Then, focusing on the "dream plays" by T'ang Hsien-tsu, she turns to the late Ming, an age which discovers radical subjectivity, and goes on to explore a seventeenth-century collection of classical tales, Records of the Strange from the Liao-chai Studio by P'u Sung-ling. The latter half of the book is devoted to a thorough analysis of The Dream of the Red Chamber, the most profound treatment of the dialectic of enchantment and disenchantment, love and enlightenment, illusion and reality. Originally published in 1993. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

The first rule of the cowboy is to protect that which belongs to the cowboy. So, when an action taken by a government agency thirty years prior threatens his home, the protective hormones surface. After about ten years of cussin and discussin, this threat is no more resolved when another government-induced threat is laid at his doorstep. This threat results in another two years of cussin and discussin before it is resolved. During this period of turmoil, it is suggested that the author take the retirement of a local county commissioner as an opportunity to run for public office. This downturn eventually impacts the countys expenditures and services are reduced. These cuts are very unpopular with certain segments of the community. As Rudy Giuliani, the former Mayor of New York, once said, When you confront a problem, you begin to solve it. As the author works through all of these unexpected problems, like a mystery novel, he learns that everything is not as it seems. When he digs into these issues, he discovers many misrepresentations. Warren Buffet, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, is quoted, Only when the tide goes out do you discover whos been swimming naked. Is it possible that Mayor Giuliani and Warren Buffet are cowboys? The serenity of life at the bunkhouse is a cherished but fragile giftinsert the first rule of the cowboy here.

Book excerpt: The Palgrave Encyclopedia of the Possible represents a comprehensive resource for researchers and practitioners interested in an emerging multidisciplinary area within psychology and the social sciences: the study of how we engage with and cultivate the possible within self, society and culture. Far from being opposed either to the actual or the real, the possible engages with concrete facts and experiences, with the result of transforming them. This encyclopedia examines the notion of the possible and the concepts associated with it from standpoints within psychology, philosophy, sociology, neuroscience and logic, as well as multidisciplinary fields of research including anticipation studies, future studies, complexity theory and creativity research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is generally understood to be an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. While we still are not certain of the root cause of MS, research results suggest that unknown environmental factors and the presence of specific genes seem the most probable targets. MS causes an inflammatory response in the central nervous system leading to neurodegeneration, oligodendrocyte death, axonal damage, and gliosis. Over the past five years ongoing research has greatly expanded our understanding of the pathogenesis of MS, detailed insight into the epidemiology and genetic factors related to MS, the introduction of new technologies and tests to better diagnose and predict the future course of the disease and the introduction of new treatments targeting MS. This collection of review chapters provides a comprehensive reference into the science and clinical applications of the latest Multiple Sclerosis research and will be a valuable resource for the neuroscience research community and the clinical neurology community of researchers and practitioners. A comprehensive tutorial reference detailing our current foundational understanding of Multiple Sclerosis Includes chapters on key topics including the genetics of MS, MRI imaging and MS, and the latest treatment options Each chapter is translational and focuses on current research and impact on diagnosis and treatment options
