What animals of this class have the most perfect form of a heart? 419 Whatkind of a portal system do we find among reptiles? 420 Describe lymphatic hearts. 421. Heart of Pishes.--The heart consists of one auricle and one ventricle, which are covered by a pericardium, and the whole organ is very small in proportion to the size of the whole body, being from ijth to Torota it3 weight. In the osseous fishes the heart is elongated and conical, while ia the Sharks and Rays it is broader. The ventricle discharges its blood through the aortic trunk upon the gills. This trunk divides up into a large number of minute branches which ramify upon the gills, and after the blood has received its oxygen from the water, it is collected by a corresponding set of vessels, and emptied into another trunk which supplies all the rest of the body--which trunk corresponds to the aorta--though it has no muscular power to propel the blood along. After it has performed its office it is collected by a system of vessels similar to veins, and returned to the, auricle. 422. Pulsations in a Minute.--Commonly not more than twenty or thirty beat in a minute may be counted in fishes, while in birds one hundred may be counted in the same time. 423. Portal Circulation.--In fishes, as in reptiles, there seems to be a double portal circulation. Circulation in Fishes, a, Heart. 6, ...

Download or read book Lost Tribes Found written by Matthew W. Dougherty and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The belief that Native Americans might belong to the fabled “lost tribes of Israel”—Israelites driven from their homeland around 740 BCE—took hold among Anglo-Americans and Indigenous peoples in the United States during its first half century. In Lost Tribes Found, Matthew W. Dougherty explores what this idea can tell us about religious nationalism in early America. Some white Protestants, Mormons, American Jews, and Indigenous people constructed nationalist narratives around the then-popular idea of “Israelite Indians.” Although these were minority viewpoints, they reveal that the story of religion and nationalism in the early United States was more complicated and wide-ranging than studies of American “chosen-ness” or “manifest destiny” suggest. Telling stories about Israelite Indians, Dougherty argues, allowed members of specific communities to understand the expanding United States, to envision its transformation, and to propose competing forms of sovereignty. In these stories both settler and Indigenous intellectuals found biblical explanations for the American empire and its stark racial hierarchy. Lost Tribes Found goes beyond the legal and political structure of the nineteenth-century U.S. empire. In showing how the trope of the Israelite Indian appealed to the emotions that bound together both nations and religious groups, the book adds a new dimension and complexity to our understanding of the history and underlying narratives of early America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battles of Trenton and Princeton have been the subject of several recent books, but this story complements them by expanding the story to include the many experiences of the people of Princeton in the wider Revolution and their contributions to it. This story combines social history with the better known military and political history of the Revolution. It does not just deal with amorphous groups and institutions, but rather with individuals working with and affected by various groups on both sides of the conflict. Readers can identify with real people they get to know in the story. This story of Princeton unfolds in narrative format and, while deeply researched, reads more like a novel than an academic study.

Download or read book Becoming Wollstonecraft written by Brenda Ayres and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming Wollstonecraft: The Interconnection of Her Life and Works draws from biography to explain her works, and it analyses the works to draw a biographical composite of Wollstonecraft. Becoming Wollstonecraft will be more fully developed than previous works, with added information that has not previously been associated with Wollstonecraft, such as the story of Reverend Mr. Joshua Waterhouse. Although there are over fifty book-length biographies published on Wollstonecraft, very few agree on much about Wollstonecraft. She seems to have become an “everywoman,” or a figure unfixed in time and protean. Deemed the Mother of Feminism, like feminism itself, she is what people have wanted her to be and is by no means an immutable or universal personage. A study of her life as evident by her works and vice versa, this monograph intends to refocus the image of Wollstonecraft for students and scholars, informed by biographical texts on Wollstonecraft and on those people in Wollstonecraft’s life and acquaintance, historical context, and exposition from her works.
