Book The Sunshine Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sunshine Primer Classic Reprint written by Marion Ingalls Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunshine Primer The first part relates to the family life. Carl, Ruth, and Beth are the children. Beginning with page 69 the thought changes and little friends and playmates out side the home life are introduced. The vocabulary presents in a visible form carefully selected words familiar to the ear. The number of words is limited and increases slowly, because perfect familiar ity with a few words is thought preferable to an uncertain grasp of a larger number. The book is from beginning to end a primer, in which the child encounters no discouraging difficulties. Another aim has been to subordinate the word list to the thought of the lessons. The subject matter is made interesting and is attractively illustrated, in order that a desire to read and a love for reading may be cultivated. The home, real child life, and the relation of this life to nature furnish the basis of the lessons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Brooks Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Brooks Primer Classic Reprint written by Clarence F. Carroll and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Brooks Primer The lessons of this little Primer are based upon four interests com mon to all normal children, toys, games, animal life, and phenomena of the changing seasons. The forms of the lessons are those of soliloquy and dialogue. It is presupposed, in either case, that the child first plays himself into the spirit and meaning of the lesson to be read. Sentence wholes are presented from the beginning, in the belief that the habit to be most used in life should be the first established. These first sentences are repeated many times in subsequent lessons. Difficult words and phrases are treated in a similar manner. By this means, children become familiar with sentence forms and with a good working vocabulary without the uninteresting and wearisome drill upon detached words, which, in many schoolrooms, makes sad encroach ments upon the reading period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Primer No one but a teacher of little children can possibly be aware of the number of times they must see words, and read and write and spell them, before they are able to recognize them at a glance, before they can read them, especially in new connections. Learning to read is a complex process, and the complexity has given rise to many so-called Methods. To teach reading well the skillful teacher will use the best parts of all good methods, and will blindly follow none. Walking and talking are also complex pro cesses, and yet babies learn to walk and to talk with very little or no help. Under right conditions the child should begin to read almost as naturally and unconsciously as it begins to talk. Under favorable conditions some children learn to read without any teaching. At the start the mechanics of reading, although important, should not be so obtruded upon the beginner as to hide from him the purpose of learning to read. Ideally, the education of the child is natural, unforced, and unhindered development. We should in cite, indirectly, and maintain his interest; we should, without attempting many things at a time, carry the child along as fast as he should go, but no faster. And we should keep in mind that the great factor in the child's education is not method, nor teaching, nor environment, but an innate faculty that makes for develop ment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bender Primer This Primer is a series of short, simple, natural, and interesting word-pictures of happy child-life, every one of which has been tested again and again in the schoolroom. The form is that in which the children expressed themselves with the greatest spontaneity, freedom, joyous ness. Author, artist, and publisher have sought to give this spirit to the book as a whole. In method, emphasis is placed upon the sentence as the most significant unit of expression, but word, sound, and letter receive due attention. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wheeler's Graded Readers: A Primer In his own way, - just a little every day, - this faithful little gleaner learns more, perhaps, during the first four years of his life than a student does in a four years' college course. In six short years he learns to speak a language, and to understand it when it is spoken by others. Within the narrow range of his limited vocabulary he can express his wants and wishes and understand the speech of others. Thus equipped, he is sent to school to take his first lessons in learning to read, learning to get thought from the crooked and curious marks upon the printed page. Book What Life Insurance Is and What It Does

Download or read book What Life Insurance Is and What It Does written by William Alexander and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Life Insurance Is and What It Does: A Primer for Laymen and Students The uncertainty regarding the life of the individual makes life insurance necessary. The certainty regarding the life of a multitude of individuals makes it possible and safe. By carefully studying the Law of Average as applied to the duration of human life, statistics were gradually gathered and tabulated, and finally what are called tables of mortality were successfully constructed. Every such table was based at first on the recorded death rate of some city. Every modern table is based on more accurate statistics, such as the experience of some insurance company or group of companies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Primer The New Primer contains an abundance of new, varied and easily taught material, largely in the form of stories having literary value. Some of the stories are cumulative; all of them may easily be taught; most of them, in fact, an unusual proportion of them, will be found to be original and new. There are also a number of rhymes and jingles, and continued stories composed of short incidents. The new Manual gives definite directions for teaching each lesson. As respects methods of teaching children to read, the past few years have shown a marked advance in naturalness, directness and economy, with a closer adjustment to the interests and capabilities of children, and a wiser application of the laws of good teaching. Those who know the Horace Mann Method, with its "Let thought lead," its "Phonics are fundamental," and its "Word problems," will appreciate its relation to this advance. Acknowledgments are due to Messrs. Warwick and York for permission to use the story "Little Pig" which appeared in the "Atlantic Educational Monthly." Book Life Assurance Primer

Download or read book Life Assurance Primer written by Henry Moir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Assurance Primer: A Text-Book, Dealing With the Practice and Mathematics of Life Assurance, for Advanced Schools, Colleges and Universities The only criticism of any consequence which has been made against the Primer is that it is not sufficiently elementary. But the book was not written for children; nor was it prepared for those who, with merely a general education, could read it through at a sitting, and at once understand it all. It was meant to be a study for men, willing and able to devote time to a careful reading, and anxious to obtain true knowledge of the subject to the extent of taking pains to digest it, and even to read other col lateral publications. Life Assurance is a source of unbounded blessing to men; even more so to women and children. But knowledge of the subject does not enter our minds intuitively; itcan only be acquired by diligence. And it would be well if this social obligation were made part of the general school training. One of the commonest errors is to assume that life assurance is an investment, and that premiums paid for protection are like deposits in a savings bank. It is difficult to convince many men, even intelligent men, who have paid for life assurance for ten years and who have lived, that their premiums should not all be held by the Company increased by interest. Yet if this were so the heirs of those who died could only get the amount of their own premiums, with interest, less expenses; while we know that the full amount assured is paid even if death take place only a few days after payment of the first premium. This is the funda mental difference between a savings bank and a life assurance company. If such general principles were known more widely, many would avoid those disappointed expectations which have caused so much heartburning.
