Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of Thomas Paine: Containing a Biography I have always considered the present Consti tution of the French Republic the best organized system the human mind has yet produced. But I hope my former colleagues will not be of fended if I Warn them of an error which has slipped into its principle. Equality of the right of suffrage is not maintained. This right is in it connected with a condition on which it ought not to depend; that is, with a proportion of a cer tain tax called direct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Writings of Thomas Paine: Containing a Biography Perhaps those two questions, properly asked, and justly answered, would have unraveled a great part of the mystery, and explained the rea son why he threw out, at such a particular time, such a strange address. They might likewise have asked, Whether there had been any former dis pute between Mr. Deane and Arthur or William Lee, and what it was about. Mr. Deane's round about charges against the Lees, are accompanied with a kind of rancor, that differs exceedingly from public-spirited zeal. For my part, I have but a very slender opinion of those patriots, if they can be called such, who never appear till pro voked to it by a personal quarrel, and then blaze away, the hero of their own tale, and in a whirl wind of their own raising; such men are very sel dom what the populace mean by the word stanch, and it is only by a continuance of serv ice that any public can become a judge of a man's principles. Book The Life of Thomas Paine Vol 1

Download or read book The Life of Thomas Paine Vol 1 written by Moncure Daniel Conway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Thomas Paine, Vol. 1: With a History of His Literary, Political, and Career At this table the Quaker chieftain, whom Danton rallied for hoping to make revolutions with rose water, unsheathed his pen and animated his Round Table of Reformers for a conflict free from the bloodshed he had witnessed in America, and saw threatening France. This little table was the field chosen for the battle of free speech its abundant ink-spots were the shed blood of hearts transfused with humanity. I do not wonder that Rickman was wont to show the table to his visitors, or that its present owner, Edward Truelove - a bookseller who has suffered imprisonment for selling pro scribed books, - should regard it with reverence. The table is what was once called a candle-stand, and there stood on it, in my vision, Paine's clear, honest candle, lit from his inner light, now cov ered by a bushel of prejudice. I myself had once supposed his light an infernal torch now I sat at the ink-spotted candle-stand to write the first page of this history, for which I can invoke nothing higher than the justice that inspired what Thomas Paine here wrote. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Thomas Paine, Vol. 2: With a History of His Literary, Political, and Religious Career in America, France, and England On January 15th, before the vote on the King's punishment was put, Paine gave his manuscript address to the president: debate closed before it could be read, and it was printed. Bacon, Locke, Lu ther, Voltaire, * Fourier, and Robert Owen were prominently of the former, and Mary Wollstonecraft and Frances Wright were decidedly among the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Works of Thomas Paine: Complete; Political and Theological There needs but to have the light of truth shine fully upon the real character of Thomas Paine, to prove him to have been a far greater man than his most ardent admirers have hitherto given him credit for being. Paine's history is so intimately connected with that of progress both before and since his time, that it will necessarily embrace a very wide range of liberal information. I am not unmindful that there have been hundreds, perhaps thousands of author-heroes and heroines. Bacon, Locke, Luther, Voltaire, * Fourier and Robert Owen were prominently of the former, and Mary Wollstonecraft and Frances Wright were decidedly among the latter.
