Book The Life of Sir Robert Christison Bart Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Sir Robert Christison Bart Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Robert Christison and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Robert Christison, Bart, Vol. 1 of 2 The Manuscript from which the First Volume of this publication is formed was found among Sir Robert Christison's papers after his death. It consists of an Autobiography of the first thirty-three years of his life, is written in a clear and beautiful hand, almost without correction or erasure, and entirely free from blot from beginning to end, and is neatly bound in three little volumes by Sir Robert's own hand. We, his sons, were not aware during his lifetime that he was engaged on this work, but from internal evidence it must have been written at intervals between 1870 and 1879, partly from memory, but chiefly from original notes and letters, some of which still exist. The MS. breaks off quite abruptly, without explanation, and we can only conjecture that increasing years had deprived him of the strength or inclination to carry on the account of his life. Book The Regius Chair of Military Surgery in the University of Edinburgh 1806 55

Download or read book The Regius Chair of Military Surgery in the University of Edinburgh 1806 55 written by Matthew H. Kaufman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of the Regius Chair of Military Surgery that existed in the University of Edinburgh from 1806–55 is discussed in detail for the first time in this book. The first holder, John Thomson, also held the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Chair of Surgery from 1804. This Regius Chair was the only one of its type in Britain for almost 50 years, and was established during the Peninsular War. After the second holder, Sir George Ballingall, died in 1855, the Government withdrew its funding support. This Chair introduced numerous Edinburgh medical students to Military Surgery, and many who attended subsequently entered the Medical Service of either the Army, Navy or East India Company. Large numbers of medical officers in the Public service also attended. These courses were popular, and the topics covered were not discussed elsewhere in the Edinburgh medical curriculum.

Book The Victorian Palace of Science

Download or read book The Victorian Palace of Science written by Edward J. Gillin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Palace of Westminster, home to Britain's Houses of Parliament, is one of the most studied buildings in the world. What is less well known is that while Parliament was primarily a political building, when built between 1834 and 1860, it was also a place of scientific activity. The construction of Britain's legislature presents an extraordinary story in which politicians and officials laboured to make their new Parliament the most radical, modern building of its time by using the very latest scientific knowledge. Experimentalists employed the House of Commons as a chemistry laboratory, geologists argued over the Palace's stone, natural philosophers hung meat around the building to measure air purity, and mathematicians schemed to make Parliament the first public space where every room would have electrically-controlled time. Through such dramatic projects, Edward J. Gillin redefines our understanding of the Palace of Westminster and explores the politically troublesome character of Victorian science.

Book Music and Academia in Victorian Britain

Download or read book Music and Academia in Victorian Britain written by Rosemary Golding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the nineteenth century, music occupied a marginal place in British universities. Degrees were awarded by Oxford and Cambridge, but students (and often professors) were not resident, and there were few formal lectures. It was not until a benefaction initiated the creation of a professorship of music at the University of Edinburgh, in the early nineteenth century, that the idea of music as a university discipline commanded serious consideration. The debates that ensued considered not only music’s identity as art and science, but also the broader function of the university within education and society. Rosemary Golding traces the responses of some of the key players in musical and academic culture to the problems surrounding the establishment of music as an academic discipline. The focus is on four universities: Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge and London. The different institutional contexts, and the approaches taken to music in each university, showcase the various issues surrounding music’s academic identity, as well as wider problems of status and professionalism. In examining the way music challenged conceptions of education and professional identity in the nineteenth century, the book also sheds light on the way the academic study of music continues to challenge modern approaches to music and university education.
