Book Lightning Man

Download or read book Lightning Man written by Kenneth Silverman and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brilliantly conceived and written biography, Pulitzer Prize–winning Kenneth Silverman gives us the long and amazing life of the man eulogized by the New York Herald in 1872 as “perhaps the most illustrious American of his age.” Silverman presents Samuel Morse in all his complexity. There is the gifted and prolific painter (more than three hundred portraits and larger historical canvases) and pioneer photographer, who gave the first lectures on art in America, became the first Professor of Fine Arts at an American college (New York University), and founded the National Academy of Design. There is the republican idealist, prominent in antebellum politics, who ran for Congress and for mayor of New York. But most important, there is the inventor of the American electromagnetic telegraph, which earned Morse the name Lightning Man and brought him the fame he sought. In these pages, we witness the evolution of the great invention from its inception as an idea to its introduction to the world—an event that astonished Morse’s contemporaries and was considered the supreme expression of the country’s inventive genius. We see how it transformed commerce, journalism, transportation, military affairs, diplomacy, and the very shape of daily life, ushering in the modern era of communication. But we discover as well that Morse viewed his existence as accursed rather than illustrious, his every achievement seeming to end in loss and defeat: his most ambitious canvases went unsold; his beloved republic imploded into civil war, making it unlivable for him; and the commercial success of the telegraph engulfed him in lawsuits challenging the originality and ownership of his invention. Lightning Man is the first biography of Samuel F. B. Morse in sixty years. It is a revelation of the life of a fascinating and profoundly troubled American genius.

Book Telegraphies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kay Yandell
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-11-09
  • ISBN : 0190901063
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Telegraphies written by Kay Yandell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telegraphies explores literatures envisioning the literary, societal, even the perceived metaphysical effects of various cultures' telecommunications technologies, to argue that nineteenth-century Americans tested in the virtual realm new theories of self, place, nation, and god. The book opens by discussing such Native American telecommunications technologies as smoke signals and sign language chains, to challenge common notions that long-distance speech practices emerged only in conjunction with capitalist industrialization. Kay Yandell analyzes the cultural interactions and literary productions that arose as Native telegraphs worked with and against European American telecommunications systems across nineteenth-century America. Into this conversation Telegraphies integrates visions of Morse's electromagnetic telegraph, with its claim to speak new, coded words and to send bodiless, textless prose instantly across the miles. Such writers as Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, and Ella Cheever Thayer crafted memoirs, poetic odes, and novels that envision how the birth of instantaneous communication across a vast continent forever alters the way Americans speak, write, build community, and conceive of the divine. While some writers celebrated far-speaking technologies as conduits of a metaphysical Manifest Destiny to overspread America's primitive cultures, others revealed how telecommunication could empower previously silenced voices to range free in the disembodied virtual realm, even as bodies remained confined by race, class, gender, disability, age, or geography. Ultimately, Telegraphies broadens the way literary scholars conceive of telecommunications technologies while providing a rich understanding of similarities between literatures often considered to have little in common.

Book American Jupiter Letters and Journals of Samuel F B Morse Vol I II

Download or read book American Jupiter Letters and Journals of Samuel F B Morse Vol I II written by Samuel F.B. Morse and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: --For the first time, this two-volume collection letters and journals are presented together in e-book format with a new introduction. Though most Americans know Samuel Finley Breese Morse only for the telegraphic code that bears his name and his participation in the development of world-changing technology, Morse had initially made his name as a painter. He studied painting in England during the War of 1812. The deeply religious Morse often incorporated spiritual themes in his paintings as well as statements on the political turmoil of his time. Two of his greatest works have these elements. The Death of Hercules is considered his masterpiece. That painting, as well as The Judgment of Jupiter contain Calvinist and anti-Federalist elements. But the second half of his life was consumed with the development and promotion of the telegraph. In his own words and those of his friends and relatives, we are able to see the man through his successes and disappointments throughout his long life. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.

Book The Telegraph in America

Download or read book The Telegraph in America written by James D. Reid and published by . This book was released on 1879 with total page 920 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an often cited panoramic history of the telegraph which discusses the principal telegraph firms and the key persons within them. Throughout his work, Reid stresses the business and economic aspects of marketing this remarkable scientific invention. The importance of The Telegraph in America as a classic reference in the field is under-scored by the fact that the author was active in telegraphy throughout the period he discusses. He thus had a personal knowledge of persons and events under examination.
