Like method of treatment has been pursued in regard to that purely external part of Nelson's career in which are embraced his military actions, as well as his public and private life. The same aim is kept in view of showing clearly, not only what he did, but the principles which dominated his military thought, and guided his military actions, throughout his life; or, it may be, such changes as must inevit ably occur in the development of a man who truly lives This cannot be done satisfactorily without concentrating the evidence from time to time; and it is therefore a duty a writer owes to his readers, if they wish such acquaintance with his subject as he thinks he has succeeded in acquiringfor himself. Book excerpt: All men know that they must die... It is but reasonable to suppose that God would reveal something in reference to the matter and it is a subject we ought to study more than any other. If we have any claim on our Heavenly Father for anything, it is for knowledge on this important subject (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 6 pg. 50). If you enjoyed Return from Tomorrow, if you liked Life after Life, you are going to love Beyond the Veil, Volume III. As I began listening to, and reading [these] stories, I was amazed at the variety of content and experience. I was amazed at the vast abundance of spiritual experiences people are having that have something to do with that thin veil separating us from our spirit brothers and sisters. It is refreshing to know that miracles are happening every day. I hope this book, in its own small way, can add a little strength or momentum to this groundswell. -Lee Nelson

Book The Life and Times of William Howard Taft

Download or read book The Life and Times of William Howard Taft written by Henry Fowles Pringle and published by Hamden, Conn., Archon Books. This book was released on 1964 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fowles Pringle (1897–1958) was an American historian and writer most famous for his witty but scholarly biography of Theodore Roosevelt which won the Pulitzer prize in 1932, as well as the scholarly biography of William Howard Taft. Although he won the Pulitzer Prize in biography for Theodore Roosevelt, a Biography, Henry F. Pringle's most famous work is considered The Life and Times of William Howard Taft: A Biography. The William Howard Taft biography was published in 1939 and is often considered the definitive biography of the 27th president. Pringle's biography of Taft was a more balanced and thoughtful piece of work than the Roosevelt study. He had unlimited access to the large collection of Taft papers. Moreover, he discovered in Taft a "tortured soul" whose life could best be understood from the inside rather than from the outside. This offered a more serious challenge to the biographer than the chiefly visible exploits of Teddy Roosevelt. A newspaper reporter, he later become a professor at the Columbia University School of Journalism, and served as chief of the publications division of the Office of War Information in 1942-1943.

Book The Life of Nelson Vol I Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Life of Nelson Vol I Illustrated Edition written by Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Admiral Mahan, passed away in 1914, his ideas and thoughts lived on in his writings, which spanned the naval strategy of his own times and the lessons learnt from history. They are still read at the modern naval academies and the ideas permeate the teachings at Annapolis. A flag officer in the U.S. Navy who fought during the American civil war for the Union forces, his works have gained a fame that makes him the foremost of the naval historians of the late 1800’s. Of enduring interest is his two volume history of Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Royal Navy and the battle of Trafalgar. An epic and tragic figure in age that abounds with them, the victor of Trafalgar who never lived past that day to see his fame endure is a favourite for biographies however few are as balanced and detailed as Mahan’s. The first volume covers Nelson’s early years his entrance to the Royal Navy and the patronage that enabled him to progress up the ranks swiftly. His decisive action at the battle of Cape St Vincent is covered in detail. Nelson’s thirst for action and glory is brought out in stark relief with his youthful naivety, and his deeply questionable actions in Naples are discussed in depth. The book ends after the brilliant victory at the battle of the Nile, which in itself would have been enough to be a crowning glory, leaving Napoleon and his expeditionary force stranded in Egypt.
