Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Asser's Life of King Alfred: Translated From the Text of Stevenson's Edition The issue of Stevenson's long and eagerly expected edition of Asser's Life of King Alfred has provided an opportunity to supply the ever increasing number of the great king's admirers with a more satisfactory rendering into English of this, perhaps the most precious document, notwithstanding all its faults, for the comprehension of his life and character. The authenticity of the Life was impugned by Thomas Wright in 1841, by Sir Henry Howorth in 187 6 - 7 7, and by an unknown writer in 1898, and it had become somewhat the fashion to regard it as a production of a later period, and therefore entitled to but little credence. The doubts as to its authenticity have been satisfactorily dispelled by the two eminent scholars who have most recently discussed the difficulties, Plummer and Stevenson. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Alfred's Books It is a very serious undertaking to produce a book which shall set forth to the English of the twentieth century the books which King Alfred translated or set others to translate from the Latin for his English subjects in the ninth century. Those books are in the early English of the ninth century, and so are not intelligible for the English of to-day. It is worth while to attempt to put their matter and their manner before the present generation of English-speaking folk, to whom the history and the personality of King Alfred, so far as they know it, has a romantic appeal. There have been two anniversaries in the memory of the older men now living, which have called special attention to the life and work of the King. The first was the thousandth anniversary of his birth, which came in 1849, the other the thousandth anniversary of his death, in 1901. On each of these occasions, a main part of the celebration centred round his literary work. In each case it was agreed that some publication should be undertaken, to inform and interest the English-speaking people of the time in the great things he did for the people of his far-off time. At the very beginning of the world-encircling history of the anglo-saxon race looms his majestic figure. We see him through the mist of ten centuries hurling back the invaders of his country, giving peace to his realm, ruling it with consummate wisdom, laboring arduously at the translation and com position oi books that his subjects might receive the precious light of learning, codifying their laws that justice might prevail in the land, - in short, building up out of his broken little dominions a kingdom deg; tined to become the corner stone of the mighty British. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Alfred the Great A.d. 8q0. The commencement Of the ninth century Of the Christian era was an eventful period in the history of the Anglo Saxons. They had gradually in the course Of years driven the original inhabitants Of Britain from the country which they once occupied, and compelled them to take refuge in Wales, Cornwall, and other places. After many a contest with the Britons, who, for nearly a century and a half, fought bravely for their independence, they succeeded in reducing the island under their own power, and esta blished in it eight distinct anglo-saxon govern ments. These, however, did not remain dis tinct long; the smaller powers were gradually absorbed in the larger, so that at the beginning of the ninth century there were but two rival kingdoms, that Of Mercia, which comprised all the midland counties, (and was bounded on the north by the Humber, on the west by the Severn, and on the south by the Thames, ) and that Of Wessex, which embraced all the southern part Of the kingdom.* At this time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alfred the Great: Containing Chapters on His Life and Times It may seem strange to some readers that by chance no full account is given of Asser's anecdote of the scene between the king and the herdswoman in the Isle of Athelney, where he took refuge, but as the story is known to all, its omission may perhaps be-pardoned; it is certainly not due to any lack of interest in the story, which seems so strikingly to show that at times, maybe when the king was resting or sitting by the fire mending his bows and weapons, he would become absorbed in the one thought foremost in his mind - that of the welfare of his country and people, then sorely harassed and oppressed by the Danes, and so neglected the homely duty that was present.
