Book The Autobiography of Joseph Bates

Download or read book The Autobiography of Joseph Bates written by Joseph Bates and published by Waymark Books. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a sailor, prisoner of war, sea captain, moral reformer, and itinerant preacher, Joseph Bates led a varied and fascinating life. As a prisoner of war, he survived the Dartmoor massacre. As captain of his own ship, he forced his sailors to swear off liquor and talked pirates out of their prey. Scrupulously honest, he once turned his ship around to return money overpaid him. The unlikeliest of preachers, Bates was an ungodly seaman who, after many narrow escapes from death, eventually gave his heart to God. In the pursuit of health, Bates was far ahead of his times. In 1821 he gave up smoking, and tobacco. He later quit drinking tea and coffee, eventually becoming a vegetarian. Before his retirement from the sea at age 35, Bates amassed a small fortune (for his times). Upon his retirement, he became actively involved in the temperance, anti-slavery, and Second Advent movements. Bates, who invested his wealth in spreading the Second Advent message, experienced the "Great Disappointment" in 1844 but did not lose his faith. In 1845, after reading a pamphlet by T. M. Preble, Bates began keeping the seventh day Sabbath. It was a tract written by Bates that convinced James and Ellen White of the importance of the Sabbath. As a result of his involvement in the "Sabbath Conferences" of 1848-1950, Joseph Bates became personally acquainted with James and Ellen White. Having personally witnessed Ellen White in vision a number of times, he became convinced that the visions were from God. Together with James and Ellen White, Joseph Bates is considered to be one of the co-founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Bates served actively as a minister until the end of his life: the year before he died (at the age of 80), he preached at least 100 times. Once a profane sailor, Bates is today remembered as a respected minister who was not afraid to be on the cutting edge. In the words of James White, "those who knew Bates longest and best, esteemed him most highly."

Book excerpt: "Those who knew Bates longest and best, esteemed him most highly." –James White Shanghaied by the British in 1810, Joe Bates spent the next five years as a British sailor and prisoner, surviving the Dartmoor massacre. Soon he was captain of his own ship, forcing his sailors to swear off liquor and talking pirates out of their prey. Scrupulously honest, he once turned his ship around to return money overpaid him. In 1824 Joseph was converted and signed "a solemn covenant with God." He found "the pearl of great price which was . . . worth more than all the vessels and cargoes I have ever commanded." After amassing a small fortune, he retired at age 36 and joined the Christian Connexion, who took the Scriptures as their "only rule of faith and practice." Then his life began to get interesting. This biography by historian George Knight makes use of previously unavailable sources, letters, and logbooks to shed new light on the first theologian and real founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who gave his estate to the new Advent movement, and spent the rest of his life in unpaid service to his King. Knight examines Bates' writings, his social and health reform, his key role in bringing the Sabbath to Adventism, and his conflict and partnership with James White. A hero who stood for truth against the majority, Bates once cut a hole in three feet of ice to baptize seven converts when it was 30 degrees below zero. In this biography Knight strips away the veneer of history to reveal new textures in the life of this most colorful pioneer.

Book Ellen G White A Psychobiography

Download or read book Ellen G White A Psychobiography written by Steve Daily and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This explosive work contains a great deal of highly documented material on the life and movement of Ellen G. White that Adventists in general, to say nothing of the public, will not know. The book is not a classic psychobiography, although history and psychology are the primary disciplines employed. It also contains a sprinkling of theology and personal reflection to make it a unique blend. The most striking evidence presented raises major questions about the prophet’s mental and moral health. It is a must read for anyone who truly wants to understand Seventh-Day Adventism and its prophetic founder. A devastating work. What Numbers and Rea started, your book will finish! —John Dart (1936-2019), longtime religion editor, Los Angeles Times I enjoyed the writing and the stories. The anecdotes you included enriched the content. Your writing was personal, and I think readers will feel that you are writing to them, and makes the book of increased value. There is the same question with Joseph Smith. Why do people stay in the face of such documentation? What are the forces that keep them tied to source documentation of fraud? —Dr. Robert Anderson, psychiatrist, author, Inside the Mind of Joseph Smith: Psychobiography and the Book of Mormon I found the material fascinating, a powerful polemic! —Ronald Numbers, William Coleman professor of History, University of Wisconsin-Madison, author, Prophetess of Health
