Both of these painters, Cotman especially, have suffered misconception, since much of their best work, indeed all Cotman's best work, is in private hands and unknown to the general public; and both have been too often judged by imitations of their pictures. Crome's work in particular has been confused with that of his pupils, besides being most extensively imitated. On this account the writer has preferred to treat as far as possible with pictures and drawings that are not only authentic but attested.
