Book The Remarkable Life of John Murray Spear

Download or read book The Remarkable Life of John Murray Spear written by John Benedict Buescher and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Murray Spear was one of nineteenth-century America's most interesting characters. A leading social agitator against slavery and capital punishment, Spear also became the nation's most flamboyant spiritualist, inventor of spirit machines, and advocate of free love. In his captivating biography, John Buescher brings to life Spear's superlatively odd story. Born in 1804, John Murray Spear began his career as a Universalist minister. Later he was a colleague of William Lloyd Garrison and Theodore Parker in the abolitionist movement and worked as an activist among the New England reformers and Transcendentalists such as Bronson Alcott, Lydia Maria Child, and Dorothea Dix. In mid-life, Spear turned to the new revelation of spiritualism and came under the thrall of what he believed were spirit messages. Spear's spirits dictated that he and a small group of associates embark on plans for a perpetual motion machine, an electric ship propelled by psychic batteries, a vehicle that would levitate in the air, and a sewing machine that would work with no hands. human liberation - sexual and otherwise - were far stranger than anyone outside his closest associates imagined, and were aimed at the eventual manufacturing of human beings and the improvement of the race. In the last years of his life, retired by the spirits and regarded by fellow Gilded Age progressives as a visitor from another age, if not another planet, Spear helped organize support for anarchist, socialist, peace, and labor causes. Spear's life, an odd mixture of comic absurdity and serious foreshadowing of the future, provides us with a unique perspective on nineteenth-century American religious and social life.

Book Messages from the Superior State

Download or read book Messages from the Superior State written by S. C. Hewitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messages From the Superior State: Communicated by John Murray, Through John M. Spear, in the Summer of 1852, Containing Important Instruction to the Inhabitants of the Earth, Carefully Prepared for Publication, With a Sketch of the Author's Earthly Life, and a Brief Description of the Spi I may here say, that, on examination of the works of Murray, * and comparing the style with that of these messages, a somewhat remarkable resemblance is, in some respects, presented between them. The sentences are, for the most part, long and involved, and peculiarities in words and phrases are not unfrequently in a striking manner similar. And when those who are acquainted with Mr. Spear's style of writing, and know it to be the very Opposite of this (his periods being, nearly always, very brief), shall compare the two, they may, perhaps, see in this a circumstance Of some account in confirming the justice of the profession that these are messages from the Superior State. Book Secularism in Antebellum America

Download or read book Secularism in Antebellum America written by John Lardas Modern and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghosts. Railroads. Sing Sing. Sex machines. These are just a few of the phenomena that appear in John Lardas Modern’s pioneering account of religion and society in nineteenth-century America. This book uncovers surprising connections between secular ideology and the rise of technologies that opened up new ways of being religious. Exploring the eruptions of religion in New York’s penny presses, the budding fields of anthropology and phrenology, and Moby-Dick, Modern challenges the strict separation between the religious and the secular that remains integral to discussions about religion today. Modern frames his study around the dread, wonder, paranoia, and manic confidence of being haunted, arguing that experiences and explanations of enchantment fueled secularism’s emergence. The awareness of spectral energies coincided with attempts to tame the unruly fruits of secularism—in the cultivation of a spiritual self among Unitarians, for instance, or in John Murray Spear’s erotic longings for a perpetual motion machine. Combining rigorous theoretical inquiry with beguiling historical arcana, Modern unsettles long-held views of religion and the methods of narrating its past.
