Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus: Critically Examined It is intelligible enough that the criticism of the Bible could not arise amongst the orthodox theo logians of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They were restrained by a rigid doctrine of inspir ation from an unprejudiced treatment of the Bible, and were moreover too much absorbed in dogmatic controversies and the defence of their confessions Of faith, to feel the need of more searching Biblical studies. It was amongst English Free-thinkers and Deists that the credibility of the Biblical narratives was first seriously assailed, and with so much tem per as to greatly detract from the scientific value Of the result. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 3 of 4: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels About three years previously, after His baptism, Jesus had wandered for forty days in the rocky desert near Jericho, with the definite feeling and consciousness that He must not yet surrender Himself to the Messianic expectation and enthusiasm of His people; because in this popular cry He recognised every temptation of the world and the devil. And He had then come out from the wilderness with the full determination, - while He unfolded His Messianic life among the people in the most abundant blessings, - to veil His Messianic dignity with a holy reserve, as the circumstances of the time required. And now once again He had retired into the same wilderness at its north-western borders, and once again He is occupied with the same question, whether now tit length He should yield Himself to His people's Messianic hope; and as, at that time, lie had at once resolved to withhold Himself from the acknowledgment of His people, as they were then disposed towards Him, so now He decided that He could no longer reject the desire, the enthusiasm, the homage of His people; and that the time had now come when He must needs publicly confide Himself to the aspiration of Israel after its Messiah. Download or read book The Life of Jesus Critically Examined written by David Friedrich Strauss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German theologian David Friedrich Strauss (1808-1874) published his highly controversial The Life of Jesus in three volumes between 1835 and 1836. This translation by George Eliot is based on the fourth German edition (1840). Strauss applied strict historical method to the gospel narratives and caused scandal across the Protestant world by concluding that all miraculous elements were mythical and ahistorical. Strauss introduces Volume 1 with a survey of 'de-mythology' in Western thought. He applies modern historical and scientific criticism to the annunciation and birth narratives; the Davidic descent and genealogies of Jesus; Jesus' visit to the temple; Jesus' baptism and temptation and his relationship with John the Baptist. The volume ends with a chapter on chronology and locality in the life of Jesus. This is a key text of nineteenth-century theology that pioneered the application of historical and scientific methods to the study of religious texts.
