Book The Character of Jesus

Download or read book The Character of Jesus written by Charles Edward Jefferson and published by Pantianos Classics. This book was released on 1908 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of Jesus Christ focuses upon the personal characteristics and traits which He demonstrated to the peoples of ancient Judaea. The author seeks to demystify and clarify the subject, with a rigorous reading of the New Testament lore and other accounts of Jesus. The character of the Son of God was established when He approached others with interest in their life situations, in the words He delivered to them, and the deeds He undertook in life. The author posits that Jesus wanted mankind to arrive at the truth of what God intends for humanity by observing his own personality; He set a thorough example of conduct for all men, of the virtues which believers in the Lord can carry through life. Each quality Christ displays is given its own chapter. The author frequently quotes scripture to help his narration. We discover that Jesus was a candid person; delivering messages with frankness and clarity. He displayed patience, generosity, courage and enthusiasm in his daily life and sermons. Later on the work discusses the connections Jesus had with God; the holiness and reverence for the divinity He displays are significant. Finally the work summarizes the overall greatness of Christ. Charles Edward Jefferson was a clergyman who spent decades preaching in Ohio, writing several books on sermonizing and on various Christian topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Life of Jesus the Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry Ward Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus the Christ, Vol. 1 The Lives of Christ which have appeared of late years have naturally partaken largely of the dialectic and critical spirit. They have either attacked or defended. The Gospel, like a city of four gates, has been taken and retaken by alternate parties, or held in part by Opposing hosts, while on every side the marks of siege and defence cover the ground. This may be unfortunate, but it is necessary. As long as great learning and acute criticism are brought to assail the text of the Gos pels, their historic authenticity, the truth of their contents, and the ethical nature of their teachings, so long must great learn ing and sound philosophy be brought to the defence of those precious documents. Book The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by William Boothby Selbie and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Book The Life of the Lord Jesus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of the Lord Jesus Classic Reprint written by Louise Seymour Houghton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus One of the fundamental principles of The Bible Study Union is that Sunday-school lesson helps should never be of such a character as to take the place of the personal study of the Bible itself in the preparation of the lesson. The tendency of helps which do this is to drive the Bible out of the Sunday-school, and to make the opinions of men about the Bible, rather than the Bible itself, the basis of instruction. One evil result of such helps appears in the practical disuse of the Bible in many Sunday-school classes at the present time. For use in the Sunday-school, the Bible without note or comment is much better than the best possible notes and comments without the Bible. It is equally true, as stated by the author of The Bible Study Union Lessons in The Andover Review for October, 1892, that "we need all the help we can get in studying the Bible; we cannot have too much of it, provided it is really help;" that is, if it is of such a character that it helps to a better understanding of the sacred text, but does not take the place of that text as the basis of study. Much such help can be gathered from historical and geographical works, from commentaries on the gospels, and from the various lives of Christ, of which we now have such rich abundance. The Manual, published in connection with The Bible Study Union Lessons, is designed to afford a large measure of such help. It is because the accompanying Life of the Lord Jesus, by Mrs. Houghton, is of this character that we gladly republish it from the columns of The Evangelist as revised, and to a large extent rewritten, by herself, for use in connection with the lessons on The Gospel History of Jesus Christ. Each chapter takes up the Scripture material of one lesson and throws much light on its meaning, as well as upon its circumstances and surroundings. Book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 1 Classic Reprint written by Ernest Renan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 1 Dost thou recall, from the bosom of God where thou reposest, those long days at Ghazir, in which, alone with thee, I wrote these pages, inspired by the places we had visited together? Silent at my side, thou didst read and copy each sheet as soon as I had written it, whilst the sea, the villages, the ravines, and the mountains, were spread at our feet. When the overwhelming light had given place to the innumerable army of stars, thy shrewd and subtle questions, thy discreet doubts, led me back to the sublime object of our common thoughts. One day thou didst tell me that thou wouldst love this book - first, because it had been composed with thee, and also because it pleased thee. Though at times thou didst fear for it the narrow judgments of the frivolous, yet wert thou ever persuaded that all truly religious souls would ultimately take pleasure in it. In the midst of these sweet meditations, the Angel of Death struck us both with his wing: the sleep of fever seized us at the same time - I awoke alone!... Thou sleepest now in the land of Adonis, near the holy Byblus and the sacred stream where the women of the ancient mysteries came to mingle their tears. Reveal to me, O good genius, to me whom thou lovedst, those truths which conquer death, deprive it of terror, and make it almost beloved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Students Life of Jesus The aim of this volume is different from that of the great lives of Christ which enrich and adorn the Christian literature of our century. For, first, it does not seek to discuss the teaching of Jesus in detail. This is regarded as a distinct theme, and is considered only in so far as seemed necessary to a clear account of the character and life of Jesus. The reader is asked to bear this fact in mind, and not to hold the book responsible for a full explanation of all the words of Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earliest Sources for the Life of Jesus This second edition of Source: differs very little from the first, partly because the limited size and scope of the work allowed for little change, but still more because there are very few changes that I wish to make. It may seem to some that I have given excessive space to the Gospel according to Mark, but I am convinced that not even yet is the supreme historical importance of that work sufiiciently appre ciated either by the general public or by many professed scholars. If my little book has stimulated anyone to study it more closely for themselves, it will not have been written in vain. Book The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History Classic Reprint written by A. J. Maas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History This "Life of Jesus Christ" is intended for readers who have neither leisure nor opportunity to consult many Commentaries and works on ancient history; henee the Author has endeavored to mark off clearly historical facts and dogmas of faith from human conjecture and pious belief. The text is entirely framed out of the words of the gospels, in such a manner that nothing is omitted and nothing added. With regard to chronology, the harmonies of Tischendorf, Friedlieb, Coleridge. Lohmann, Fillion, Gilmore and Abbott have been consulted. Where the chronological order is doubtful, it has been indicated as such in the notes; in most cases the various arrangements of events as found in other authors, have been added. Whenever different opinions exist regarding the most important historical or doctrinal difficulties of the text, nearly all opinions are briefly mentioned. The more probable explanations are emphasized, while the untenable ones are rejected. In the character and arrangement of its notes, the book follows the gospel harmony of Jansenius Gandavensis, although it does not lav claim to the completeness of this latter work. The nature of the book has made it necessary to collate many commentaries and Lives of Christ. Not to mention the classical commentators on the Gospels, whose interpretations are looked upon as common property, the Author must acknowledge his obligations to the works of Schuster, Reischl, Corluy, Schaff, Milligan, Fillion, Geikie, Farrar, Sepp, Stanley, Fouard and several other writers of recent date. The remarks, it will be observed, are more frequently explanatory than devotional. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
