Book The Gospel According to Jesus Christ

Download or read book The Gospel According to Jesus Christ written by José Saramago and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 1994-09-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fictional account of the life of Christ “illuminated by ferocious wit, gentle passion, and poetry”—from the Nobel Prize-winning author of Skylight (Los Angeles Times Book Review). For José Saramago, the life of Jesus Christ and the story of his Passion were things of this earth: a child crying, a gust of wind, the caress of a woman half asleep, the bleat of a goat or the bark of a dog, a prayer uttered in the grayish morning light. The Holy Family reflects the real complexities of any family, but this is realism filled with vision, dream, and omen. Saramago’s deft psychological portrait of a savior who is at once the Son of God and a young man of this earth is an expert interweaving of poetry and irony, spirituality and irreverence. The result is nothing less than a brilliant skeptic’s wry inquest into the meaning of God and of human existence. “Enough to assure [Saramago] a place in the universal library and in human memory.”—The Nation “Fiction that engages the mind as well as the spirit.”—Kirkus Reviews “Mixes magic, myth, and reality into a potent brew.”—Booklist Praise for José Saramago “The greatest writer of our time.”—Chicago Tribune “A literary master.”—The Boston Globe “Saramago is the most tender of writers . . . With a clear-eyed and compassionate acknowledgment of things as they are, and a quality that can only be termed wisdom. We should be grateful when it is handed to us in such generous measure.”—The New York Times “Saramago’s fiction operates in a realm not far from fable: the territory of Kafka, Gogol, and Borges.”—Los Angeles Times

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The bestselling author of Zealot and host of Believer explores humanity’s quest to make sense of the divine in this concise and fascinating history of our understanding of God. In Zealot, Reza Aslan replaced the staid, well-worn portrayal of Jesus of Nazareth with a startling new image of the man in all his contradictions. In his new book, Aslan takes on a subject even more immense: God, writ large. In layered prose and with thoughtful, accessible scholarship, Aslan narrates the history of religion as a remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. As Aslan writes, “Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless of whether we’re believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves.” But this projection is not without consequences. We bestow upon God not just all that is good in human nature—our compassion, our thirst for justice—but all that is bad in it: our greed, our bigotry, our penchant for violence. All these qualities inform our religions, cultures, and governments. More than just a history of our understanding of God, this book is an attempt to get to the root of this humanizing impulse in order to develop a more universal spirituality. Whether you believe in one God, many gods, or no god at all, God: A Human History will challenge the way you think about the divine and its role in our everyday lives. Praise for God “Timely, riveting, enlightening and necessary.”—HuffPost “Tantalizing . . . Driven by [Reza] Aslan’s grace and curiosity, God . . . helps us pan out from our troubled times, while asking us to consider a more expansive view of the divine in contemporary life.”—The Seattle Times “A fascinating exploration of the interaction of our humanity and God.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “[Aslan’s] slim, yet ambitious book [is] the story of how humans have created God with a capital G, and it’s thoroughly mind-blowing.”—Los Angeles Review of Books “Aslan is a born storyteller, and there is much to enjoy in this intelligent survey.”—San Francisco Chronicle

Book The Bible s True History of Jesus

Download or read book The Bible s True History of Jesus written by Donald P. Long and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible’s True History of Jesus: According to the King James Version is a biblical study on the three major aspects of the life of so-called Jesus, (1) his birth, (2) his Life, and (3) his Death. There is a false narrative about the life of Jesus. (1) There was no immaculate conception. He was conceived and birthed like every human being that has been and is walking on this earth. (2)The belief that he is God is a belief to deceive the people. (3) Jesus never died on the cross and came back to life according to the Bible. The Resurrection is the greatest deception that has ever been taught to the world. This book is a study and must be read and studied as such.

Book The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History Classic Reprint written by A. J. Maas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ According to the Gospel History This "Life of Jesus Christ" is intended for readers who have neither leisure nor opportunity to consult many Commentaries and works on ancient history; henee the Author has endeavored to mark off clearly historical facts and dogmas of faith from human conjecture and pious belief. The text is entirely framed out of the words of the gospels, in such a manner that nothing is omitted and nothing added. With regard to chronology, the harmonies of Tischendorf, Friedlieb, Coleridge. Lohmann, Fillion, Gilmore and Abbott have been consulted. Where the chronological order is doubtful, it has been indicated as such in the notes; in most cases the various arrangements of events as found in other authors, have been added. Whenever different opinions exist regarding the most important historical or doctrinal difficulties of the text, nearly all opinions are briefly mentioned. The more probable explanations are emphasized, while the untenable ones are rejected. In the character and arrangement of its notes, the book follows the gospel harmony of Jansenius Gandavensis, although it does not lav claim to the completeness of this latter work. The nature of the book has made it necessary to collate many commentaries and Lives of Christ. Not to mention the classical commentators on the Gospels, whose interpretations are looked upon as common property, the Author must acknowledge his obligations to the works of Schuster, Reischl, Corluy, Schaff, Milligan, Fillion, Geikie, Farrar, Sepp, Stanley, Fouard and several other writers of recent date. The remarks, it will be observed, are more frequently explanatory than devotional. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Historical Jesus of the Gospels

Download or read book The Historical Jesus of the Gospels written by Craig S. Keener and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 870 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest substantive sources available for historical Jesus research are in the Gospels themselves; when interpreted in their early Jewish setting, their picture of Jesus is more coherent and plausible than are the competing theories offered by many modern scholars. So argues Craig Keener in The Historical Jesus of the Gospels. In exploring the depth and riches of the material found in the Synoptic Gospels, Keener shows how many works on the historical Jesus emphasize just one aspect of the Jesus tradition against others, but a much wider range of material in the Jesus tradition makes sense in an ancient Jewish setting. Keener masterfully uses a broad range of evidence from the early Jesus traditions and early Judaism to reconstruct a fuller portrait of the Jesus who lived in history.
