Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jacob Henle If ever I had an inspiration, it was on the day when I first spoke to you about Jacob Henle. I explained that although he was one of the greatest medical scientists of modern times, practically nothing about his career had appeared in the English language. Not being a medical woman, you had never heard of Henle, and were naturally and properly bored. But since it is impossible for you to be unsympathetic, the sub ject was again broached, and somehow we decided to do Henle - as an experiment. Your share of the work was to consist in translating all the available German data, after which I was to use your translations as a basis for my own work. The first article you undertook happened to be desultory and tedi ous, and after being engulfed in its discursiveness and battling with its technicalities, you would have abandoned your self-appointed task, but for two reasons; in the first place, you were probably curious to see what I could accomplish with such unpromising material; and in the second place, you are no shirker. So the work went on, and you trans lated the notices by Leyden, Flemming, and Pagel, the essay by Wal deyer, and Kussmaul's witty chapter in his Memoirs from the Youth of an Old Physician. By this time, the greatness of the man had grown upon us, and the experimental stage was over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jacob Gruber "Jacob Gruber was a character and copied after no man," was a remark made by one of his cotemporaries, an aged minister of the Baltimore Conference, and whoever reads the sketch of his life presented in the following pages will, we think, be fully convinced of the fact. He was himself always and everywhere, and he never lost his individuality as one of the most humorous, witty, and yet withal grave and earnest preachers of his day. Book A Short History of Medicine

Download or read book A Short History of Medicine written by Erwin H. Ackerknecht and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1982-03 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since it was first published in 1955, A Short History of Medicine has been hailed as the best available book of its kind: a concise and readable introduction to the history of medicine, written for students and professionals alike. In twenty short chapters, Ackerknecht traces the fascinating saga of man's progress in the science and art of medicine, from primitive times through early civilizations, classical antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and into the mid-twentieth century. The struggles and triumphs of some of history's most renowned medical pioneers -- Hippocrates, Harvey, Jenner, Osler, and many more -- are here, but this is not a catalog of individual accomplishments. Ackerknecht strikes a balance between the history of medicine and its social and cultural background; between medical science and medical practice; and between clinical and preventative medicine, illuminating not only the world of medicine but the position of medicine in the world. --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of Jacob Creath, Jr. T the epoch of Messiah's advent, the Romans, governed despotically by one man, ruled a large portion of our world. Protected by their eagle, the heralds of salvation safely visited nations which would otherwise have been inaccessible to Christian influence. The culti-r vation, too, which, as in the case of a great modern nation, to some extent, ever followed in the wake of their arms, usually wielded in an unrighteous cause, was, upon the whole, favorable to the pro gress of Truth, which, the more thoroughly it is scrutinized and understood, the more highly will it ever be appreciated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bartered Birthright: Forty Brief Expository Addresses on the Life of Jacob; For the Week-Days of Lent I have tried to make these addresses interesting to a week-day congregation. For this, in many instances, style, method, and personal preference have been sacri ficed; something, it may be, of the dignity of a former generation; nothing, I trust, of doctrinal soundness or of spiritual earnestness and wisdom. The story helps, although each address is complete in itself. I have used the commentaries, ancient and modern, and several monographs on the narrative 1 Some verses not other wise credited are by Archbishop Alexander. During the past fall and winter a number of type written copies oi these addresses have been read to Sun day congregations by students in two of our theological seminaries and the approval of these young men probably has had its influence with my publishers, as it has been an encouragement to me, in giving them a more perma nent form.
