Excerpt: ... the life of archbishop nuttall chapter I 1842-1862 early life in December, 1891, on one of his many voyages from Jamaica to England, Bishop Nuttall was moved to put on paper a memorandum of his early career, and in December, 1897, owing to the fact that many enquiries had been made by representatives of English newspapers and some incorrect statements had been published respecting his life, a friend of the Archbishop who was acquainted with most of the facts of public interest, compiled a sketch which was used by interviewers, and was also published in the Jamaica Churchman at the time. On these two sources much of the following account of his early life is based. Curiously enough, neither gives his birthplace. Although a typical Yorkshire man and of Yorkshire stock, he was not, as is commonly supposed, of Yorkshire birth. In June, 1902, he mentioned incidentally in a communication which he sent to a correspondent who sought an account of his life, that he was born on the 26th of January, 1842, at Clitheroe, during a temporary sojourn there of his mother. A brother of his father, named Robert, was then resident there. Though born across the border in Lancashire, all his early life was spent in Yorkshire. The home of his mother, Alice, daughter of William and Martha Armistead, who was born on the William Armistead was churchwarden of St. Mary-le-Gill, the parish church of the district, situated in the fields near Coates, a township adjoining Barnoldswick.
