They read the earlier chapters of St. Luke and St. Matthew, and openly marvel that any mind can believe what to them appears to be palpable mythology; or they hear the story of one of Christ's miracles of power - the walking on the Sea of Galilee, or turning the water into wine - and scarcely conceal their in sinuated misgiving as to honesty of those who can accept such narratives as true. Doubtless we should share their convictions in these respects, if we approached the subject in the same spirit and by the same avenues. To show that we do not and w/ij/ we do not so approach it, is - incidentally at least - one of the Objects of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ, Vol. 1 Although ever bearing in mind the attempts that in recent years have been made to impugn the credibility or reduce the significance of the Gospel narrative, the writer has abstained from all historical, critical, and doctrinal discussions, as alien from his object. He trusts, however, that such a simple recital of the incidents in Christ's life as the following pages present, may help to create or to deepen the conviction that the natural and supernatural are so inseparably interwoven in the narrative that if you take away the latter you leave the former inexplicable the blending of the two being essential to the coherence and consistency of the record; and that the human and the divine so meet and mingle in the complex characterbf our Lord, and in their combination were so singularly illus trated in his words and acts, that if his divinity be denied, his humanity becomes mutilated, stained, and degraded. Download or read book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 2 written by David Friedrich Strauss and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 2: For the People You, dear brother, are independent - exempted by the happy privilege of commercial pursuits from any solicitude as to the favour or displeasure of spiritual or lay superiors; the appearance of your name on the foremost pages of a book of mine can do you no injury. And then not only have you supported your brother by standing faithfully at his side in many a trying crisis - you have also done for the writer in your single person all that could possibly be done by patron, teacher, or friend. You have encouraged, and, what is more, you have understood me; often have you cheered my flagging spirits, and recalled my truant attention to the theme to which it was first devoted; in the composition of this treatise more especially you have been present to my thoughts from the very first, and not a page has been written without an anxious wish to satisfy what I knew to be your own conception of the specific requirements of the age. And here the dedication of the book coincides with its destination as announced by the title. In dedicating it to my brother, I consider him as a representative of the people, believing that among the German people for whom the book is destined, there are many like himself; many who find their best solace after a day of toil in serious reading; many possessing the exceptional courage to disregard the beaten track of conventional and ecclesiastical routine, and to think for themselves on the most important objects of human concernment; I may add - the still rarer capacity of seeing that there a no security, in Germany at least, for political liberty and grew, until the public mind has been emancipated from superstition, and initiated in a purely human culture. Download or read book The Life of Jesus the Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry Ward Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus the Christ, Vol. 1 The Lives of Christ which have appeared of late years have naturally partaken largely of the dialectic and critical spirit. They have either attacked or defended. The Gospel, like a city of four gates, has been taken and retaken by alternate parties, or held in part by Opposing hosts, while on every side the marks of siege and defence cover the ground. This may be unfortunate, but it is necessary. As long as great learning and acute criticism are brought to assail the text of the Gos pels, their historic authenticity, the truth of their contents, and the ethical nature of their teachings, so long must great learn ing and sound philosophy be brought to the defence of those precious documents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Words of Christ, Vol. 1 To write the story of such a Life is no easy task, but it is one beyond all others important for the best interests of the age. It is impossible to describe the infinite dignity of His person; but His words and acts are His legacy to us, which it is vital to study and apply. I have tried in this book to restore, as far as I could, the world in which Jesus moved; the country in which He lived; the people among whom He grew up and ministered; the religion in which He was trained the Temple services in which He took part; the ecclesiastical, civil, and social aspects of His time; the parties of the day, their Opinions and their spirit; the customs that ruled; the influences that prevailed the events, social, religious, and political, not mentioned in the Gospels, that formed the history of His lifetime, so far as they can be recovered. Book The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ Vol 1 of 6

Download or read book The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ Vol 1 of 6 written by Johann Peter Lange and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 6: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels The work of Dr Lange, translated in the accompanying volumes, holds among books the honourable position of being the most complete Life of our Lord. There are other works which more thoroughly investigate the authenticity of the Gospel records, some which more satisfactorily discuss the chronological difficulties involved in this most important of histories, and some which present a more formal and elaborate exegetical treatment of the sources; but there is no single work in which all these branches are so fully attended to, or in which so much matter bearing on the main subject is brought together, or in which so many points are elucidated. The immediate object of this comprehensive and masterly work, was to refute those views of the life of our Lord which had been propagated by Negative Criticism, and to substitute that authentic and consistent history which a truly scientific and enlightened criticism educes from the Gospels. It is now several years since the original work appeared in Germany, but the date of its first appearance will be reckoned a disadvantage only by those who are unacquainted with the recent history of theological literature. No work has in this interval appeared which has superseded, or can be said even to compete with this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 1 Classic Reprint written by Ernest Renan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 1 Dost thou recall, from the bosom of God where thou reposest, those long days at Ghazir, in which, alone with thee, I wrote these pages, inspired by the places we had visited together? Silent at my side, thou didst read and copy each sheet as soon as I had written it, whilst the sea, the villages, the ravines, and the mountains, were spread at our feet. When the overwhelming light had given place to the innumerable army of stars, thy shrewd and subtle questions, thy discreet doubts, led me back to the sublime object of our common thoughts. One day thou didst tell me that thou wouldst love this book - first, because it had been composed with thee, and also because it pleased thee. Though at times thou didst fear for it the narrow judgments of the frivolous, yet wert thou ever persuaded that all truly religious souls would ultimately take pleasure in it. In the midst of these sweet meditations, the Angel of Death struck us both with his wing: the sleep of fever seized us at the same time - I awoke alone!... Thou sleepest now in the land of Adonis, near the holy Byblus and the sacred stream where the women of the ancient mysteries came to mingle their tears. Reveal to me, O good genius, to me whom thou lovedst, those truths which conquer death, deprive it of terror, and make it almost beloved. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah, Vol. 1 of 2 IN issuing a new edition of this book I wish, in the first place, again to record, as the expression of permanent convictions and feelings, some remarks with which I had prefaced the Second Edition, although happily they are not at present so urgently called for. With the feelings of sincere thankfulness for the kindness with which this book was received by all branches of the Church, only one element of pain mingled. Although I am well convinced that a careful or impartial reader could not arrive at any such conclu sion, yet it was suggested that a perverse ingenuity might abuse certain statements and quotations for what in modern parlance are termed 'anti-semitic purposes. That any such thoughts could possibly attach to a book concerning Him, Who was Himself a Jew Who in the love of His compassion wept tears of bitter anguish over the Jerusalem that was about to crucify Him, and Whose first utter ance and prayer when nailed to the Cross was: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do would seem terribly incongruous and painful. Nor can it surely be necessary to point out that the love of Christ, or the understanding of His Work and Mission, must call forth feelings far different from those to which reference has been made. To me, indeed, it is difficult to associate the so-called Anti Semitic movement with any but the lowest causes: envy, jealousy, and cupidity on the one hand or, on the other, ignorance, prejudice, bigotry, and hatred of race. But as these are times when it is meces sary to speak unmistakably, I avail myself of the present opportunity to point out the reasons Why any Talmudic quotations, even if fair, can have no application for anti-semitic purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young, Vol. 2 A covenant means a bargain, or agreement made between two or more persons. One of these persons promises to do certain things, provided that the other will do certain other things. For example, we read in Genesis, twenty-ninth chapter, about Jacob going to live for awhile with his uncle, Laban, in Padanaram, where Abraham had formerly lived. Laban and Jacob made an agreement or covenant with each other. Jacob wished to marry Rachel, one of Laban's daughters. Laban said, you shall have my daughter on these conditions: if you will serve me for seven years, as a shepherd, taking care of my flocks of sheep, then, as soon as the seven years are ended, you shall marry Rachel, and have her for your wife. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ, Vol. 2: Close of the Ministry, and Passion Week Morning has dawned upon the mountain-top which had witnessed the wonderful night-scene of the transfiguration. Jesus and the three disciples begin to descend. The silence they at first observe is broken by our Lord turning to his disciples and saying, "Tell the vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from the dead." A few days before, Jesus had straitly charged them that they should tell no man that he was the Christ. The discovery would be premature. The people were not prepared for it.
