Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's Life of Christ: In Words of One Syllable; With Fifty Full-Page Illustrations So Zach-a-ri-us lost his voice and for some months he could not speak a word. Then the babe was born, and when he was eight days old it was time to name him and give him to the Lord. The wife's friends said he ought to be named Zach-a-ri-us, but she said, No, he shall be called John (which means The Lord is gra cious). Then they said as none of her kin bore that name it was not well to give it to the child, and they made signs to the priest who could not yet speak, and asked what he would have him called. And he wrote, His name is John. And then his voice came back, and he spake out loud and blessed the Lord. All the folks were full of awe and fear, and said, What sort of child shall this be? They did not know what the ah-gel had told the priest in the church; and that this babe was one day to be the great John the Bap-tist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Words of Christ, Vol. 1 To write the story of such a Life is no easy task, but it is one beyond all others important for the best interests of the age. It is impossible to describe the infinite dignity of His person; but His words and acts are His legacy to us, which it is vital to study and apply. I have tried in this book to restore, as far as I could, the world in which Jesus moved; the country in which He lived; the people among whom He grew up and ministered; the religion in which He was trained the Temple services in which He took part; the ecclesiastical, civil, and social aspects of His time; the parties of the day, their Opinions and their spirit; the customs that ruled; the influences that prevailed the events, social, religious, and political, not mentioned in the Gospels, that formed the history of His lifetime, so far as they can be recovered. They read the earlier chapters of St. Luke and St. Matthew, and openly marvel that any mind can believe what to them appears to be palpable mythology; or they hear the story of one of Christ's miracles of power - the walking on the Sea of Galilee, or turning the water into wine - and scarcely conceal their in sinuated misgiving as to honesty of those who can accept such narratives as true. Doubtless we should share their convictions in these respects, if we approached the subject in the same spirit and by the same avenues. To show that we do not and w/ij/ we do not so approach it, is - incidentally at least - one of the Objects of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Life of Christ: For Old and Young Tms is a new book, not an abridgment, and is written for the multitudes, older or younger, who, while shrinking from a Life of Christ in two volumes, would be very glad to read and master the amazing story, if presented vividly, and with adequate knowledge, in a moderate compass.' I have spared no pains to make the following pages supply, at least in a measure, this much felt want. The fullest Life of Our Lord must always remain the best for the student, clerical or lay; but while these have their wishes already supplied, others, both older and younger, have hitherto been without a similar presentation of the Gospel narrative, within smaller limits, more suited to their taste or leisure. Book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Vol 1 of 1 Classic Reprint written by Ernest Renan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus, Vol. 1 of 1 Dost thou recall, from the bosom of God where thou reposest, those long days at Ghazir, in which, alone with thee, I wrote these pages, inspired by the places we had visited together? Silent at my side, thou didst read and copy each sheet as soon as I had written it, whilst the sea, the villages, the ravines, and the mountains, were spread at our feet. When the overwhelming light had given place to the innumerable army of stars, thy shrewd and subtle questions, thy discreet doubts, led me back to the sublime object of our common thoughts. One day thou didst tell me that thou wouldst love this book - first, because it had been composed with thee, and also because it pleased thee. Though at times thou didst fear for it the narrow judgments of the frivolous, yet wert thou ever persuaded that all truly religious souls would ultimately take pleasure in it. In the midst of these sweet meditations, the Angel of Death struck us both with his wing: the sleep of fever seized us at the same time - I awoke alone!... Thou sleepest now in the land of Adonis, near the holy Byblus and the sacred stream where the women of the ancient mysteries came to mingle their tears. Reveal to me, O good genius, to me whom thou lovedst, those truths which conquer death, deprive it of terror, and make it almost beloved. Book The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Consultant Paediatric Neurologist Richard Newton, M.D. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ for the Young, Vol. 3 Philip had a friend named Nathanael. The next time he met him, he said, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. But Nazareth was a despised place, and had a bad reputation. Nathanael had a very poor Opinion of the place, and he asked Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him Come and see. And this is what we should say to persons when we wish them to become Christians. There is so much that is lovely and excellent in Jesus, that if people will only come and see if they will only prove for themselves what a glorious Saviour he is, they will find it impossible to help loving and serving him. Nathanael came to Jesus And when he heard the wonderful words that Jesus spoke to him he was converted at once, and expressed his wonder by saying Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel. We can read all about this in John i: 43 - 51. Nathanael became a disciple of Jesus, and one of the twelve apostles, and is supposed to be the same one who bears the name of Bartholomew, in the different lists of the apostles. After this we read of Jesus calling Matthew the publican, who was a tax-gatherer. This is what is meant by his sitting at the receipt of custom. Follow me were the words spoken to him. He obeyed at once; left all and followed Jesus. St. Luke and St. Mark mention this same call, but they give the name of Levi, to the person thus called. This is not strange, for it was common among the Jews for persons to have two names. Sometimes they were called by one 'of these names, and sometimes by the other. Here we have the account of six persons, who became disciples of Jesus; and of the different ways in which they were led to follow him. No doubt many others were led to become his disciples from simply hear ing him preach; and from listening to the gracious words that he spoke.
