All but one have been written within very little more than a year; and in several cases, as will be readily seen, one has grown out of another. The nucleus of the volume is formed by four lectures delivered in response to an invitation from Cambridge. They had also been rehearsed at Oxford; and the opportunity has been taken to add to them two supplementary lectures given here in the early summer of this year.
