Book The Shaping of Turkey in the British Imagination 1776 1923

Download or read book The Shaping of Turkey in the British Imagination 1776 1923 written by David S. Katz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the principal writings that shaped the perception of Turkey for informed readers in English, from Edward Gibbon’s positing of imperial Decline and Fall to the proclamation of the Turkish Republic (1923), illustrating how Turkey has always been a part of the modern British and European experience. It is a great sweep of a story: from Gibbon as standard textbook, through Lord Bryon the pro-Turkish poet, and Benjamin Disraeli the Romantic novelist of all things Eastern, followed by John Buchan's Greenmantle First World War espionage fantasies, and then Manchester Guardian reporter Arnold Toynbee narrating the fight for Turkish independence.

Book excerpt: There is a great deal of interest in the history of Armenia since its renewed independence in the 1990s and the ongoing debate about the genocide - an interest that informs the strong desire of a new generation of Armenian Americans to learn more about their heritage and has led to greater solidarity in the community. By integrating themes such as war, geopolitics, and great leaders, with the less familiar cultural themes and personal stories, this book will appeal to general readers and travellers interested in the region.

Dr. Mardin seeks to describe the conditions which produced these ideas, among them the influence of the Enlightenment, the changes in the fabric of Turkish society, the combination of the traditionalist Ottoman world-view with a modern Western outlook. How a modern intelligentsia was formed in the Ottoman Empire, first by the Patriotic Alliance, then under the banner of the Young Ottoman Society, is the theme of this work. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Ali Pacha, of Janina, Vizier of Epirus, Surnamed Aslan, or the Lion: From Various Documents The great European celebrity acquired by the Vizier Ali, pacha of Janina, justly entitles that tyi'ant of classic ground to a biographical notice, in which the fidelity of history shall neither be disfigured by exaggeration nor compromised by falsehood. Tyranny is in itself sufficiently odious Without attempting to render its features still more disgusting by distortion. The faithful de scription of the life of a tyrant may even afford instructive lessons to those nations, who, living under mild and beneficent laws, are notwithstand ing infected with a mania for political revolutions; at least, it will be useful to shew them that Wicked characters and ungovernable passions are the natural consequences of tyranny. Book Nationalism Globalization and Orthodoxy

Download or read book Nationalism Globalization and Orthodoxy written by Victor Roudometof and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2001-07-30 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roudometof provides an in-depth sociological analysis of the birth and historical evolution of nationalism in the Balkans. The rise of nationalism in the region is viewed as part of a world-historical process of globalization over the last five centuries. With the growing contacts between the Ottoman Empire and the Western European system, the Eastern Orthodox of the Balkans abandoned the enthoconfessional system of social organization in favor of secular national identities. Prior to 1820, local nationalism was influenced by the Enlightenment, though later it came to be developed on an ethnonational basis. In the post-1830 Balkans, citizenship rights were subordinated to ethnic nationalism, according to which membership to a nation is accorded on the basis of church affiliation and ethnicity. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the discourse of nationhood was institutionalized by the native intelligentsia of the Balkan states. In the first half of the 20th century, the efforts of Balkan states to achieve national homogenization produced interstate rivalry, forced population exchanges, and discrimination against minority groups. While the Cold War helped contain some of these problems, the post-1989 period has seen a return of these issues to the forefront of the Balkan political agenda.
