Stephens "Dear Sirs, - The manuscript of the biography prepared by you, and submitted for my perusal, with the request that I should correct any errors that I might see in it, has been carefully read to me from beginning to end: and I have only to say that I think all the essential facts in regard to me and my acts are substantially correct, "Of course, I have not had time to compare the copies of the letters, or of the speeches, with the originals. The speeches, however, have all, I think, been published some time ago, in some form or other; most of them in the 'Congressional Globe' and 'Record.' If any error in them shall have crept into your copies, it can easily he discerned. As to the letters, in one instance I have suggested the addition of a few words, to make more clear the true meaning of what was intended at the time of a hasty writing; in another, I have suggested the change of two words; and in still another, the change of one word. These changes have been made with the same view. In no instance have these suggested changes marred or modified the original meaning in the slightest degree. I also suggested some foot-notes which may throw light upon the text. "For your very great labor, gentlemen, in selecting and arranging, out of the vast material before you, what you have thus presented, and which was so gratuitously undertaken, you have my sincere thanks. "As I said to you personally, I now repeat, that I yield my consent to the publication of the work in my lifetime only upon the ground of the many misrepresentations of my motives, objects, and acts on several occasions in my not uneventful public course. The whole generation of our young orators, instead of reading Blair for rules, Scott and Addison for figures, and Byron and Shake Speare for quotations, had better be studying their sub ject, and thinking to whom they are going to present it, and how they will most probably engage attention, and produce conviction in the minds of those to whom it is presented. Stephens (1812–1883) became one of the South’s leading politicians and lawyers. Thomas E. Schott has written the first scholarly biography that analyzes the interplay between the public and private Stephens and between state and national politics during his contradictory career. Stephens was a celebrated Whig, turned Democrat, who served as congressman from 1843 to 1859 and an antisecessionist who became vice-president of the Confederacy. Ignored by the Davis administration once in office, he eventually opposed most of its wartime policies. Schott argues that Stephens’ devotion to the southern cause was as genuine as his devotion to civil liberties and states’ rights. After the war, he became an elder statesman for Georgia, serving nine more years as a congress-man and the last five months of his life as governor.

The author has obtained much interesting material from files of Georgia and other Southern newspapers of the 1840's, '50's, and '60's, from old letters and scrapbooks of the war period, and from manuscripts in the possession of the archives of the government at Washington.Alexander H. Stephens was one of the most interesting personalities in the American Civil War. He was Vice-President of the short-lived Southern Confederacy. A remarkable man in many respects, his gift of eloquence gave him an almost unique position as a lawyer, and his constitutional views lend a certain piquancy to the record of his public life. He was not so much concerned in the retention or abolition of slavery when he assisted to fight the North as in the assertion of State rights. He was their most powerful advocate, and he supported the war in so far as it was intended to uphold the right to secede. When the result of the war showed that might and his theory of right were on opposite sides, he accepted the event, however unwelcome, as conclusive. It is not easy for us to-day to understand all that was involved in the triumph of the North and the placing of the whites of the South at the political mercy of their former slaves. We get an idea from this biography. "A great life full of tragedy both public and private, yet also full of triumph and of usefulness" is Mr. Pendleton's summing-up. "A scholar, a man of deep political learning, of profound knowledge of constitutional history, of moderate opinions and temperate spirit" the "Saturday Review" called him when noticing his "Constitutional Men of the Late War Between the States." This life is worth reading first as a study of the man, secondly, for the light it throws on the struggle between North and South. The author also delves into secession movements in the country preceeding the Southern movement, particular the opposition of New England to The War of 1812 and their desire to secede as a result. Very logical book, not of the sentimental, syrupy, variety at all. Well-sourced and annotated.
