Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Of Agricola And Germany Ublius' cornelius tacitus, the greatest of the Roman historians, fiourished in the reign of the Emperor Trajan (a.d. 98 There is no positive evidence as to the place of his birth, or its date, or the time of his death. A tradition of no great value makes him a native of Interamna. This was the birthplace of the Emperor Tacitus, who claimed kinship with the historian. As to the year of his birth, we know only that he was somewhat older than his intimate friend, the younger Pliny, who was born a.d. 61 or 62. Pliny himself says (epp. Vii. Zo) that they were propemaa'um aequales but adds adulescentzzlus, cum jam tu fama glarz'aque floreres, fe segui. Ancupz'scaeam. These expressions may point to a difference in age of four or five, possibly even eight or ten, years: we can not well place the birth of Tacitus earlier than 5 I or later than 56. The best authorities are generally agreed upon a.d. 54. Two or three considerations tell in favor of an earlier date. In the Life of Agricola (chap. III.) he appears to reckon himself among those who, being juvenes at the accession of Domitian, had arrived ad senectutem under the rule of that tyrant. Now forty-five was the age of senatus according to Roman law; and as Domitian died in 96, Tacitus can hardly have been born much later than 5 1. Again, the narration of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Agricola, And, the Germania In this revision of my father's edition of the Agricola and Germania, the effort has been made to bring the text and the annotation up to date through the use of the most important critical and exegetical material that has appeared since the publication of the old edition, and at the same time to preserve the general character of that edition and to retain so far as possible such views on important histor ical questions as the original editor had developed through long and careful study of the subject. In cases of this sort, where the opinions held by more recent scholars have appeared to be very generally opposed to his, his notes have been for the most part retained, but have been supplemented by statements of certain opposing views. Professor Hendrickson and myself have collaborated (particularly in the case of the Agricola) in the revision of the text and annotation, and he has contributed the new introductions to both treatises. Maps, which the old edi tion lacked, have been provided, and tables showing the chief deviations of the present text from that of the old edition and of Halm are given in an appendix. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Roman senator and historian Publius Cornelius Tacitus is known throughout Western history as one of the greatest historical writers of the Silver Age of Latin literature. He lived during the first century AD and was the son of a wealthy aristocratic family. Not much is known about his personal life; however, it is clear that both Tacitus and Pliny the Elder were acquaintances and even possibly childhood friends, though there is no substantial evidence to support this. Tacitus studied rhetoric in order to create a career in law and politics. He steadily rose throughout the ranks due to his strong speaking style and oration skills. However, his language skills did not stop with verbal speeches. He was also an accomplished writer who focused on the history of the Roman Empire. He created five works, "The Annals," "The Histories," "The Agricola," "The Germania," and "A Dialogue on Oratory." His works delve deep into the facts as he knew them, rarely ever embellishing history to create a story. He also stayed true to chronological order and laid history out in visible steps. It is also notable that Tacitus knew that his fellow politicians were corrupt; he believed that they gave up their strong voice in order to please a usually corrupt emperor. These five great works are brought together in this collection of "The Complete Works of Tacitus."

Download or read book The Annals of Imperial Rome written by Tacitus and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1973-07-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tacitus' Annals of Imperial Rome recount the major historical events from the years shortly before the death of Augustus up to the death of Nero in AD 68. With clarity and vivid intensity he describes the reign of terror under the corrupt Tiberius, the great fire of Rome during the time of Nero, and the wars, poisonings, scandals, conspiracies and murders that were part of imperial life. Despite his claim that the Annals were written objectively, Tacitus' account is sharply critical of the emperors' excesses and fearful for the future of Imperial Rome, while also filled with a longing for its past glories.
