Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of Alexandre Dumas, 1802-1870 The centenary of the birth of Alexandre Dumas pere occurred in July of this year. As no satisfactory "Life" of the great Frenchman exists in English, this was thought an appropriate moment for giving the public, with whom his romances are so popular, an account of Dumas's life, character, and writings, which should be both interesting to the ordinary reader, and trustworthy as a book of reference. The author has endeavoured to tell the general reader - "the man in the public library" - who Dumas was, what he did, which books he did write and which he did not write, and finally, what his confreres and the great critics have said of him. One or two points may be dealt with here, by way of anticipating obvious criticism. The first relates to the omission from the following pages of the spiteful libels of MM. "de Mirecourt," de Cas-sagnac, etc. It is almost impossible at this date for an)- one, particularly an Englishman, to take the circumstantial allegations of these gentlemen and refute them in detail. From Birth To Manhood And Fame (1802-30) Ik, like Defoe, we were about to offer fiction in the guise of biography, instead of biography in a more or less romantic form, we should be tempted to preface the story of Dumas with one of those elaborate sub-titles in which the author of " Robinson Crusoe" delighted. It would probably run somewhat in this fashion, if we allowed ourselves to prepare one, which of course we do not: -- "The life and adventures of Alcxandre Dumas of the World, who was both a black and a white man; a Royalist and a Republican, an aristocrat and a sans-culotte; who took part in three revolutions, and made three different reputations; who wrote more books than any other man living or dead, w/io erected tiuo "Monte Cristos," one of which made his fortune and the other of which unmade it; who enriched the world and was poor all his life; together with an account of his exploits as dramatist, romancer, traveller, politician, wit, journalist, diplomatist, soldier, lecturer, cook, historian, poet, etc." Before this Alexander entered the world he was about to conquer, much was already his own by inheritance. He was born into the atmosphere of fiery light and fierce heat which the Revolution had left behind it. He was destined to possess a good share of blue and of black blood, for his grandfather was no other than the Marquis AntoineAlexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, a French nobleman, self-exiled to San Domingo, and his grandmother was a negro-woman, Louise-Cessette Dumas. It was a romantically ill-assorted match, full of interesting possibilities. The son of this marriage threw over parentage and aristocracy, enlisted in the French army as a private under his mother's name, and at thirty-one years of age had risen to the...

Book The Three Musketeers the Complete and Unabridged Original Classic Edition in Large Print

Download or read book The Three Musketeers the Complete and Unabridged Original Classic Edition in Large Print written by Alexandre Dumas and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This premium quality large print edition contains the complete and unabridged classic version of The Three Musketeers, printed on heavyweight, bright white paper in a large 7.44"x9.69" format, with a fully laminated full-color cover featuring an original design. One of the most widely-read and best-known historical adventure novels of all time, The Three Musketeers has delighted readers for generations since it first appeared in 1844. Filled with action and adventure, the novel depicts actual historical events more closely than most would imagine. Dumas' wit and sense of humor is woven throughout, creating a highly entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable tale which has become a truly timeless classic with readers around the world. The year is 1625 and France is ruled by King Louis XIII, weak, indecisive, and heavily influenced by his Minister, Cardinal Richelieu. Young D'Artagnan, brash and provincial, arrives in Paris hoping to become a member of the King's Musketeers, and almost immediately offends three members of that elite corps, Porthos, Aramis, and Athos. Arranging separate but virtually simultaneous duels with each, the four meet but instead of dueling among themselves they band together when attacked by the Cardinal's guards. The four become fast friends, and, when asked by D'Artagnan's landlord to find his missing wife, embark upon a series of adventures that embroils them in the intrigues of the Royal Court and the machinations of Cardinal Richelieu and his most dangerous agent, a beautiful young spy known simply as "Milady," who will stop at nothing to disgrace the Queen, advance the agenda of her master, and take her revenge upon the four friends who have interfered with her schemes. Alexandre Dumas (born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, 1802-1870), was a French playwright, novelist, essayist and magazine and travelogue writer. One of the most widely read French authors, his works have been translated into nearly 100 languages. Best known today for his historical adventure novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers, his works, comprising some 100,000 pages, have been the basis for nearly 200 films. Dumas' father, a General born in Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti) to a French nobleman and an African slave, used his aristocratic rank to help Alexandre secure a position with Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orlans. With the accession of Louis-Napolon in 1851, Dumas fell out of favor, moving to Belgium for several years before relocating to Russia and then Italy before returning to Paris in 1864. The married Dumas carried on numerous affairs, perhaps with as many as forty different women, fathering at least four and possibly as many as seven illegitimate children, including a boy named after him. This son, a successful novelist and playwright, became known as Alexandre Dumas, fils (son), while the father became known as Alexandre Dumas, pre (father). His last novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished at his death, was completed by another writer and published in 2005, becoming a bestseller. In 2008 a translation was published in English as The Last Cavalier.

Book excerpt: "We read The Three Musketeers to experience a sense of romance and for the sheer excitement of the story," reflected Clifton Fadiman. "In these violent pages all is action, intrigue, suspense, surprise--an almost endless chain of duels, murders, love affairs, unmaskings, ambushes, hairbreadth escapes, wild rides. It is all impossible and it is all magnificent." First published in 1844, Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling epic chronicles the adventures of D'Artagnan, a gallant young nobleman who journeys to Paris in 1625 hoping to join the ranks of musketeers guarding Louis XIII. He soon finds himself fighting alongside three heroic comrades--Athos, Porthos, and Aramis--who seek to uphold the honor of the king by foiling the wicked plots of Cardinal Richelieu and the beautiful spy "Milady." "Dumas will be read a hundred, nay, three hundred years on," wrote John Galsworthy. "His greatest creation is undoubtedly D'Artagnan, type at once of the fighting adventurer and of the trusty servant, whose wily blade is ever at the back of those whose hearts have neither his magnanimity nor his courage. Few, if any, characters in fiction inspire one with such belief in their individual existences. . . . To one who made D'Artagnan all shall be forgiven." Clifton Fadiman agreed: "Dumas enjoyed writing his stories. . . . The pleasure he must have felt in creating D'Artagnan's troubles and triumphs flashes out of these pages. . . . Dumas rampaged through the history of France, inventing, changing, distorting--doing whatever was needed to produce a tale to hold the reader breathless."

Book excerpt: Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/0oisZU --------- The Three Musketeers (7x10 Larger Edition) Plot Summary: The basics of the plot are relatively well known: young hot-headed D'Artagnan meets with and challenges each of the Three Musketeers, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis; the three, impressed by his bravery and quick-thinking, take him under their wing; meanwhile, the Queen of France, engaged in a never-consummated affair with the Duke of Buckingham, is under the watchful eye of Cardinal Richelieu and his spies; most formidable of his spies are a team made up of a shadowy figure referred to only as the Mysterious One and Milady; and through various means and machinations, our four heroes are drawn into a contest against Richelieu on the side of the Queen. we are quickly drawn under Dumas' spell. His characters are all distinctly drawn, Aramis with his holy orders and quiet philosophy, Athos with his distinguished paternalism and deep sorrow, and Porthos with his loud and brash manner and his vanity. Likewise the enemies they are up against, the smoothly evil and calculating Richelieu; the seductive, brilliant hellcat that is Milady, a stronger female in literature nowhere to be found; and the dangerous Comte de Rochefort, a shadowy presence of malevolence. Built on the ridiculous, the humorous, the exciting, and deeply in the characters, this work creates a world of romance (in that oh-so-classic sense) and adventure which conscripts the reader and delivers him to the front lines. Many have been amazed by the book's ability to invoke lust, pity, wonder, respect, scorn, and hatred, all while driving along a plot filled with new events and characters. There's a twist every other chapter. No wonder that many book worms say that they didn't find their way to Dumas sooner. Facts and Trivia: 1. The Three Musketeers was adapted as a serial by the BBC in 1954 and 1966. The Musketeers, a 2014 series by Adrian Hodges, is another BBC adaptation. 2. 1995 saw the release by publisher U.S. Gold of Touch: The Adventures of the Fifth Musketeer by video game developers Clipper Software, a classic point-and-click adventure game. 3. The book has been the subject of many movies for over a century with one of the more recent ones, a Russian historical adventure movie by the same name as the original title of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This antiquarian book contains Alexandre Dumas's historical work "Murat." Joachim-Napoleon Murat was the brother-in-law of Napoleon Boneparte, and held many titles in his life including Marshal of France, Grand Admiral of France, Grand Duke of Berg, and King of Naples. The story was first published as part of Dumas's eight-volume series "Celebrated Crimes" (1839-40), and recounts Murat's fall from favour and fascinating death subsequent to Napoleon's own demise. Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) was a famous French writer. He is best remembered for his exciting romantic sagas, including "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." Despite making a great deal of money from his writing, Dumas was almost perpetually penniless thanks to his decidedly extravagant lifestyle. His novels have been translated into nearly a hundred different languages, and have inspired over 200 motion pictures. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author."
