Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Work of William Pryor Letchworth: Student and Minister of Public Benevolence Keep its influence from being lost. If the story is not found to have an interest of no common degree it will be because it is not rightly told. In devoting the greater part of his mature life to benevolent work (performed as an un paid official of the State of New York, and wholly at his own cost), Mr. Letchworth was obedient, it is plain, to hereditary promptings, from an ancestry which had been spiritually cul tured for two centuries by the humane Christ ianity of the Society of Friends. The family was of ancient English stock, so ancient that its origin, if the tracing were possible, would most likely be found in Saxon times. The name, Letchworth, is that of a parish and village in the hundred of Broadwater, county of Hertford, England, two miles from the town of Hitchin and northwestward from London about thirty three miles. It seems obviously a Saxon name, and Whether the parish received it from the family or the family from the parish is an unde termined question which calls for no discussion. Book Pestilence Insanity and Trees

Download or read book Pestilence Insanity and Trees written by John M. Harris Jr. and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length biography of New York surgeon and social activist Stephen Smith (1823–1922), who was appointed to fifty years of public service by three mayors, seven governors, and two U.S. presidents. The book presents the complex life of Stephen Smith, a consistent figure in the history of public health, mental health, housing reform in New York, and even urban reforestation. Utilizing Smith’s writings, public records, and recently discovered personal correspondence, this research shows how Smith succeeded where others failed. It also acknowledges that Smith was unsuccessful in convincing his fellow professionals to fight for a cabinet level public health department or to resist the rise of custodial care for the mentally impaired. Given Smith’s many accomplishments, the book asks us to consider if what stopped him stops us, highlighting the relevance of Smith’s story to contemporary debates. Pestilence, Insanity, and Trees is a readable and well-documented narrative and a resource for students and scholars, filling gaps in the history of American medicine, public health, mental health, and New York social reform.

Book Framing Disease

  • Author : Charles E. Rosenberg
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 1992

  • Pages : 360 pages

Download or read book Framing Disease written by Charles E. Rosenberg and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many diseases discussed here--endstage renal disease, rheumatic fever, parasitic infectious diseases, coronary thrombosis--came to be defined, redefined, and renamed over the course of several centuries. As these essays show, the concept of disease has also been used to frame culturally resonant behaviors: suicide, homosexuality, anorexia nervosa, chronic fatigue syndrome. Disease is also framed by public policy, as the cases of industrial disability and of forensic psychiatry demonstrate. Medical institutions, as managers of people with disease, come to have vested interests in diagnoses, as the histories of facilities to treat tuberculosis or epilepsy reveal. Ultimately, the existence and conquest of disease serves to frame a society's sense of its own "healthiness" and to give direction to social reforms.
