Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Man's Power: The Life and Work of Emin Pasha in Equatorial Africa The great Anglo-Saxon and English-speaking nations of the Old and New Worlds as yet have no succinct and convenient record of the life and work of Emin Pasha in Equatorial Africa. These pages, it is hoped, will in some measure supply the need. The narrative is based upon the Pashas own letters, and official and original documents, for the use of which the writer is indebted to Sir Francis De Winton, K.C.M.G., C.H. Allen, Esq., F.R.G.S., and others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Personal Experiences in Equatorial Africa: As Medical Officer of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition The following pages contain the journal which I kept during the period of my connection with the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Being desirous to give my original impressions of persons and things, I have made no change whatever in the contents of my African note-books, excepting the necessary ones in the elementary departments of orthography and syntax. I have inserted, here and there, a few paragraphs containing my views on the principal diseases which I was called upon to treat. The remainder of the text I regard as supplementary, in some measure, to Mr. Stanley's volumes. Excepting Darkest Africa, ' no other journal of the entire course of the expedition has been published, and no account of our experiences at Ipoto and Fort Bodo has hitherto seen the light in any shape. The pressure of professional duties has delayed the publica tion longer than I could have wished: the history of the diary itself will, I trust, be, to the indulgent reader, some slight excuse for its many shortcomings in style and arrangement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Light on Dark Africa: Being the Narrative of the German Emin Pasha Expedition, Its Journeyings and Adventures Among the Native Tribes of Eastern Equatorial Africa, the Gallas, Massais, Wasukuma, Etc;, On the Lake, Baringo and the Victoria Nyanza The question of the opening up of Dark Africa, with its vast prospects for trade, commerce, and agriculture, and still more important capabilities for the diffusion of Christianity and the spread of civilisation, is coming more and more to the front, and occupies a continually increasing amount of public atten tion. The natural desire for information on this great and important subject has been increased and stimulated by the works on the African continent, that have lately appeared from the pens of eminent travellers and explorers; the more so, per haps, from the wide divergences in the views and the methods of action advocated by the various authors.
