Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Niccolo Machiavelli So many books on the Renaissance have appeared of late, that it is only natural to regard the public as almost wearied of the theme, and on the point of refusing attention to anything connected with it. Therefore, I believe it may be useful to indicate what are the points of permanent value - not, assuredly, of my own work, but of its subject. I have shown elsewhere that I was impelled to study the Renaissance not only because we find in that period the primary source of many national qualities and defects, but because we may likewise discover therein the cause of many erroneous judgments passed on us by foreigners. Accordingly, the study of the Renaissance appeared to me to offer the best means of teaching us Italians to know ourselves, correct our faults, and tread the path of progress. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical, Political, and Diplomatic Writings of Niccolo Machiavelli, Vol. 1 of 4: Translated From the Italian In offering the present translation of Machiavelli's principal historical, political, and diplomatic writings, my original object was simply to afford to the general reader the opportunity of judging for himself of the character of the an, and of those of his works upon which his reputation for good or for evil mainly depends. I had no intention of entering the lists of the detractors and defenders of Machiavelli, or 01 adding to the number of his commentators. Enough of these have written in almost every European tongue, making volumes sufficient nearly to constitute a respectable library by themselves. Nevertheless, as certain views and conclusions touching the more prominent of the seeming contradictions in Machiavelli's writings suggested themselves to me whilst engaged in this translation, I venture briefly to present them, although they may differ materially from those taken by leading critics and commentators. No writer perhaps has been more variously judged than Machiavelli; regarded by some as the very embodiment of the spirit of evil, especially by the earlier critics; and by others looked upon as a pure, unflinching patriot, misunderstood and misinterpreted. The manifest contradictions, real or apparent, in his writings, have naturally given rise to widely differing commentaries, aiming less to explain and reconcile these contradictions to each other, than to make the favorable or unfavorable estimate of the author prevail. None of Machiavelli's writings, except his treatise "On the Art of War," were printed during his lifetime. Being compelled to follow the monarch from city to city, it was requisite to provide himself with servants and horses, and although on starting, the envoys had eighty florins each, they soon got through one hundred ducats, since it proved impossible to find decent board and lodging for less than a crown and a half a day, a larger sum than that which they received. Therefore both grumbled sorely, s especially Machiavelli, who was not rich, and yet had no talent for economy. Meanwhile, the two envoys on reaching Lyons on the 28th of July, found that the King had already started. They caught him up at Nevers, and after having spoken with the Cardinal de Rouen, both were granted an audience on the 7th of August, in the presence of the Cardinal, of Rubertet, Trivulzio and others.
