Book Gender Policies in Japan and the United States Comparing Women s Movements Rights and Politics

Download or read book Gender Policies in Japan and the United States Comparing Women s Movements Rights and Politics written by J. Gelb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to explore the similarities and differences in gender related policy making and outcomes in Japan and the United States. It focuses on the role of women's movements and other factors in determining policy. Three policies are examined: Equal employment, domestic violence and reproductive rights, with additional attention to gender equality policy in Japan and 'family friendly policy' in both nations. The analysis examines the significance of international feminism and new standards of gender equity - kansetsu gaiatsu - as a resource for Japanese feminists seeking policy reform, as well as new trends toward policy cooperation. The future role of the United States, long a leader in policy development for women, is critically analyzed, and Gelb suggests that American feminists and policymakers can learn important lessons from the experience of Japanese women's movements and efforts at influencing public policy.

Book The Mirror Dance

Download or read book The Mirror Dance written by Susan Krieger and published by Susan Krieger. This book was released on 1983 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A day draws to a close. Helen worries about when her children will get home; Gloria considers her day at work and, again, thoughts cross her mind about telling them at church that she is a lesbian; Gayle prepares for a meeting at the Women's Shelter...; Ellen gets ready for a class. Chip and Jessica plan another party at their house; Diana paces her kitchen, troubled that Meg still intends to see Bronwyn...." These are some of the people who come to life in this unique book about a lesbian community. It is an experiment, both in women's language and in social science method, and is composed of an interplay of voices that echo, again and again, themes of self and community, sameness and difference, merger and separation, loss and change. Although the method of presentation is unusual, the book is based on solid research. The author lived for a year with the community and then spent two intensive months interviewing 78 women who were either members of the community or importantly associated with it. The author began by addressing several basic questions about privacy that quickly led her to explore dilemmas of identity. In time an even more compelling problem emerged: the loss of sense of self, how it occurs and how it may be dealt with in a social setting. The nature of the community itself raised this issue because it was a community of likeness, intimacy, and ideology. It was also a stigmatized or deviant community--and of women, individuals with life experiences that tended to encourage the giving up of the self to others. The book is organized around particular kinds of situations and relationships in the community where conflicts concerning control over identity are especially prominent. It concludes with an essay on the author's method, "Fiction and Social Science." Author note: Susan Krieger is Visiting Scholar, Department of Sociology, Stanford University.

Book W Stands for Women

Download or read book W Stands for Women written by Michaele L. Ferguson and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2007-08-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking seriously the “W Stands for Women” rhetoric of the 2004 Bush–Cheney campaign, the contributors to this collection investigate how “W” stands for women. They argue that George W. Bush has hijacked feminist language toward decidedly antifeminist ends; his use of feminist rhetoric is deeply and problematically connected to a conservative gender ideology. While it is not surprising that conservative views about gender motivate Bush’s stance on so-called “women’s issues” such as abortion, what is surprising—and what this collection demonstrates—is that a conservative gender ideology also underlies a range of policies that do not appear explicitly related to gender, most notably foreign and domestic policies associated with the post-9/11 security state. Any assessment of the lasting consequences of the Bush presidency requires an understanding of the gender conservatism at its core. In W Stands for Women ten feminist scholars analyze various aspects of Bush’s persona, language, and policy to show how his administration has shaped a new politics of gender. One contributor points out the shortcomings of “compassionate conservatism,” a political philosophy that requires a weaker class to be the subject of compassion. Another examines Lynndie England’s participation in the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib in relation to the interrogation practices elaborated in the Army Field Manual, practices that often entail “feminizing” detainees by stripping them of their masculine gender identities. Whether investigating the ways that Bush himself performs masculinity or the problems with discourse that positions non-Western women as supplicants in need of saving, these essays highlight the far-reaching consequences of the Bush administration’s conflation of feminist rhetoric, conservative gender ideology, and neoconservative national security policy.
