Book Nobility Faith and Masculinity

Download or read book Nobility Faith and Masculinity written by Emanuel Buttigieg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an important study of elite European noblemen who joined the Order of Malta. The Order - functioning in parallel with the convents that absorbed the surplus daughters of the nobility - provided a highly respectable outlet for sons not earmarked for marriage. The process of becoming a Hospitaller was a semi-structured one, involving clear-cut (if flexible) social and financial requirements on the part of the candidate, and a mixture of formal and informal socialization into the ways of the Order. Once enrolled, a Hospitaller became part of a very hierarchical and ethnically mixed organisation, within which he could seek offices and status. This process was delineated by a complex interaction of internal factors - hierarchy, patriarchy and age - set within external mechanisms such as papal patronage and interference. This book is innovative in its methodology, drawing on a wide range of sources and applying historiographical approaches not previously brought to bear on the Order.

Book Houses and Domestic Space in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hospitaller Malta

Download or read book Houses and Domestic Space in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hospitaller Malta written by George A. Said-Zammit and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houses and Domestic Space in Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hospitaller Malta is a study concerned with a wide spectrum of early modern dwellings in Malta, ranging from palazzi and affluent residences to peasant dwellings, troglodyte houses, and hovels. The multifaceted approach adopted in this book allows houses and domestic networks to be studied not only in terms of architecture and construction materials, but also as places of human habitation where house dwellers act, react and interact in different contexts and circumstances. Dwellings are places that permit different social and economic activities, whilst providing shelter and security to the household members. Through the available sources, the houses of Hospitaller Malta are analysed in terms of their spatial properties and how they generate privacy, interaction and communication, identity, accessibility, security, visibility, movement and encounters, and, equally important, how domestic space relates to gender roles, status, and class. This work, therefore, seeks to reach a deep and nuanced understanding of domestic space and how it relates to the islands’ history and the development of their society during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, Malta played a key role in the Mediterranean campaign, its submarines, light surface forces, and aircrafts destroying supplies desperately needed by Rommel's forces in North Africa. The price the Maltese paid for this effort was the most sustained and intensive bombing campaign in the war, enduring over 130 tons of bombs per square mile. This, compounded by the Axis blockade that attempted to starve Malta into surrender, set the stage for numerous convoy battles, the most dramatic being Operation Pedestal, remembered on Malta to this day as the Santa Marija Convoy. In this book, Dennis Castillo uses published histories as well as interviews and oral histories to explore the experiences of the Maltese and how their faith sustained them through this dark period of Malta's history.

Download or read book Malta written by David M. Boswell and published by ABC-CLIO. This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malta is an archipelago consisting of three islands (Gozo, Comino and Malta itself) located in the central Mediterranean. The strategic location of the islands has meant that they have long enjoyed an importance out of all proportion to their small size. Malta has a history of control by colonial powers and this is reflected in the ethnic background of its population, which comprises Arabs, Normans, Sicilians, English, Spanish and Italians. Occupied at various periods by the Thoenicians, the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Knights of St. John and the French, Malta became a crown colony of Britain in 1814. During the Second World War, the islands played a crucial role for the Allies, and the bravery shown by the people prompted King George VI to award the entire colony the George Cross, Britain's highest honour for valour. The nation achieved full independence in 1964 and became a republic in 1974. This revised bibliography fully updates the first edition, published in 1985, and pays particular attention to Malta's chequered history and strategic position.

Book Antoine Favray 1706 1798

Download or read book Antoine Favray 1706 1798 written by Stephen Degiorgio and published by Midsea Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a long-awaited comprehensive monograph on the artist, whose importance had already been established through numerous articles and past exhibitions. The two authors examined hundreds of works by Favray (and others attributed to him), both in Malta and overseas, and a vast number of these are reproduced in this book. The first four chapters of the book feature Favrays transition from Paris to Rome, his first Maltese stay, his Turkish Adventure, and his second Maltese sojourn respectively. Chapter 5 is devoted to his drawings, whilst in Chapter 6 his Followers and Discredits are discussed. The two authors join forces in bringing us this meticulously researched and excellently presented book, with Fiorentino being primarily responsible for the critical appraisal of Favrays oeuvre, and Degiorgio bringing to the fore his archival expertise and a large number of unpublished references. Stephen Degiorgio is a teacher and researcher, and for the last 25 years has researched the Archives of the Order of St. John held at the National Library of Malta. He has published monographs related to Maltese history in Monuments and The Malta Independent. Emmanuel Fiorentino is an art historian and critic. Since 1975 he has been the regular art critic for The Sunday Times of Malta, and has published numerous art related articles in local books and periodicals. In 1998 he organised the exhibition of drawings by Favray held at St. James Cavalier.
