Book Selected Poems

Download or read book Selected Poems written by Eric Walker and published by . This book was released on 2019-08 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Edited and Introduced by Raymond Foye. Afterword by Neeli Cherkovski. The brief life of Eric Walker (1964-1994) was also a remarkably productive one. He was a close friend and a peer to many of the important poets of San Francisco and Berkeley in his day: Bob Kaufman, Philip Lamantia, Tisa Walden, Howard Hart, Kirby Doyle, Neeli Cherkovski, Julia Vinograd, and many others. This is the first major collection of his work. "It began as a kind of fairytale life in poetry: the young man from the provinces arrives in San Francisco to meet his mentors, the Beat poets of San Francisco and Berkeley. It was 1981, he was seventeen, he slept on floors, begged food, bummed cigarettes, and in the morning left behind scribbled poems that delighted and amazed his hosts. These early years were filled with promise, joy, and exuberance, but there followed in his twenties a chaotic descent into mental illness. The poetry and madness, in classic fashion, often went hand in hand. A dozen years and five hundred poems later, he was found hanging in a prison cell, aged 29."--Raymond Foye, from the Introduction "The poems of Eric Walker are exquisite. Not only did he possess a musical ear and a natural sense of craft, but he left behind a considerable body of work. Although repetitive at times, that in itself only enhances the sense of mastery over his interior demons and gives the reader a grasp of what would rise to the surface later if his life had not been so tragically shortened. They are so much of his mind and of his imagination, but they grew out of the rough and beautiful coast lands of California, and down through the tangled shadows of his psychic redwood forest."--Neeli Cherkovski, from the Afterword

Book The Seven Laws of Abundant Living

Download or read book The Seven Laws of Abundant Living written by Rabbi Eric Walker and published by Destiny Image Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Torah, the Bible, the Tree of LifeGods Word is a set of instructions for everyone who wants to live a victorious, joyful, and abundant life. The Seven Laws of Abundant Living explains a parable relating to the Tree of Life that the Lord spoke to Eric Walkera Messianic Rabbi. The parable opens wide the unique components of the Word and the physical Tree of Life that is introduced in Genesis and again in Revelation. The LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the groundtrees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden was the tree of life (Genesis 2:9). The parable reveals seven aspects of the Tree of Life: The ground, the seed, the roots, the trunk, the branches, the leaves, and the fruit. Each of these components brings seven life-changing conclusions to light that stimulate spiritual growth and maturity. The simple yet profound image is powerful and compels you into self-examination to assure your spiritual health and growth in each of the areas God wanted Eric Walker to share with you. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God (Revelation 2:7).

Book Defining Moments in the Life And Times of Tyrone Pierre Dumas

Download or read book Defining Moments in the Life And Times of Tyrone Pierre Dumas written by Tyrone Pierre (Kofi) Dumas and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My life and times have taken many twist and turns. When I was in grade school, at Twelfth Street School, I thought I was going to be a piano player after taking lessons because we had to piano at home for me to practice that did not last long. In junior high school at Robert Fulton Junior High, I fell in love with playing the drums and really got good at it. My mom broke down and purchased me a set of drums and even got to our community’s great drummers to teach me. Victor Sword was jazz drummer, and Vic Pitts was a drummer with the Seven Sounds R&B group. I learned so much from them and thought I would play in a band one day. In junior high I also fell in love with design and drafting in drafting class with the added learning in metal shop and carpentry class. Using my hand was one of the common things about all those possible career choices. The piano and the drum made noise while I could sit for hours with a pencil/pen and draw. By 1970–71, while in my first year of college, I settled on architecture. I quit when I found no time to practice as my studies and assignments started to take all my time. I should add that along with my college work and study requirements, I found some friends and girls who became a part of my new priorities. As a Black first-generation college student, I lost my mind while partying with my brotherhood and sisterhood most of the week and weekends. I also found love in all that chaos when I met my future wife, and we had kids, while starting a family in 1972–73. Life changed again as I figured out that many sacrifices would have to take center stage in pursuit of completing college. I started college at MATC (Milwaukee Area Technical College) in 1970, and in 1973/74, I was admitted into UWM (University of WI-Milwaukee) School of Architecture. I was so in the groove to get my degree. During a two-year period (1973–1975), I decided to finish up at MATC part-time to get my associates degree, while attending UWM full-time from 1973 to 1977 to get my bachelor’s degree. For a two-year period, I attended both day and night schools, worked PT jobs and work study jobs, and participated in the raising of out two children while my wife worked full-time. I had quit drinking, partying, and smoking after I got married and was needing some mental-health stability, which I found in 1974, when I started doing stand-up comedy, as inspired by comedian Richard Pryor. The rest is history, as I achieved all my goals by getting both my associate and bachelor’s degrees, with the intervention of my Lord and Savior/God during all the times I thought I could not make it. In fact, during the times I wanted to quit, my wife would call my mother and my mother-in-law, and I would go to sit with them and get the words of wisdom from these angels for support. There were other significant help and support during my career launch from the beginning until now. Ms. Margaret Garner-Thompson gave me the money to pay my MATC tuition in 1970. Mr. Prentice McKinney told me about student financial aid, which allowed me to pay for my college years. Dr. Earnest Spaights, Rachel Seymore, Clara New, Paul Pettie, Dr. Sandra Moore, and many others at UWM and MATC helped me clarify purpose and meaning in my life from 1970 to 1977. Triumph the Church of God in Christ became a foundation of faith while in college where Aunt Red, Reverend Buck, Queenie, and my mother-in-law, Hagar Harrel, lifted me up to do well as they worked to build a new church and they added me to the design committee. My school time, life, and family got an intervention-based boost from these angels, sent by God. My sister Sharon was married with her family at that time while my brother Anthony was in the US Navy. My grandmother, Grandcheer/Arvella Twine, was always cheering for me from her home in Fordyce, Arkansas, where I spent my summers as a kid. I am a product of my family, good people, friends, neighborhoods and community, which allowed the moments of my life to happen! Life for me is comparable to the alphabet, with A being the beginning of life (born date) and Z being the end of life (death). The real life and book you write is done in the B through Y. The many chapters are written by you and all those members of your family whom you have impacted. The chapters of the book continue to be written even when you have passed on and become an ancestor by your family members and friends. As an ancestor, every time your name is remembered, spoken, or thought about, you still live in love, peace, faith, and spirit within those still writing their book chapters! 1

Download or read book Stormy Monday written by Helen Oakley Dance and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most significant factor in the career of Aaron “T-Bone” Walker was his ability to bridge the worlds of blues and jazz. The guitar artistry of this early exponent of urban blues was not only admired by blues musicians like B.B. King, Gatemouth Brown, Albert King, and Albert Collins, and rock guitarists such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, but by such jazz greats as Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, and many others with whom he recorded. Stormy Monday is the first biography of T-Bone Walker to be published. Using dozens of interviews with Walker, as well as with members of his family, close friends, fellow musicians, and business associates, the book offers a remarkable frank insider’s account of the life of a blues musician and compulsive gambler, from the wild living and hard drinking on the road to a solid and contented family life at home. “In a very real sense the modern blues is largely his creation.” blues authority Pete Welding has written about T-Bone Walker. “The blues was different before he came on the scene, and it hasn’t been the same since, and few men can lay claim to that kind of distinction. No one has contributed as much, as long, or as variously to the blues.”

Book excerpt: What makes a nation happy? Is one country's sense of happiness the same as another's? In the last two decades, psychologists and economists have learned a lot about who's happy and who isn't. The Dutch are, the Romanians aren't, and Americans are somewhere in between... After years of going to the world's least happy countries, Eric Weiner, a veteran foreign correspondent, decided to travel and evaluate each country's different sense of happiness and discover the nation that seemed happiest of all. ·He discovers the relationship between money and happiness in tiny and extremely wealthy Qatar (and it's not a good one) ·He goes to Thailand, and finds that not thinking is a contented way of life. ·He goes to the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, and discovers they have an official policy of Gross National Happiness! ·He asks himself why the British don't do happiness? In Weiner's quest to find the world's happiest places, he eats rotten Icelandic shark, meditates in Bangalore, visits strip clubs in Bangkok and drinks himself into a stupor in Reykjavik. Full of inspired moments, The Geography of Bliss accomplishes a feat few travel books dare and even fewer achieve: to make you happier.

Book Code Name Johnny Walker

Download or read book Code Name Johnny Walker written by Johnny Walker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unforgettable memoir, the Navy SEALs’ most trusted translator—a man who is credited with saving countless American lives and became a legend in the special-ops community—tells his inspiring story for the first time. As the insurgency in Iraq intensified following the American invasion, U.S. Navy SEALs were called upon to root terrorists from their lairs. Unsure of the local neighborhoods and unable to speak the local languages, they came to rely on one man to guide them and watch their backs. He was a "terp"—an interpreter—with a job so dangerous they couldn't even use his real name. They named him Johnny Walker. They soon called him brother. Over the course of eight years, the Iraqi native traveled around the country with nearly every SEAL and special operations unit deployed there. He went on thousands of missions, saved dozens of SEAL and other American lives, and risked his own daily. Helped to the U.S. by the SEALs he protected, Johnny Walker's life is so remarkable that his tale reads like fiction. But every word of it is true. For the first time ever, a "terp" tells what it was like in Iraq during the American invasion and the brutal insurgency that followed. With inside details on SEAL operations and a humane understanding of the tragic price paid by ordinary Iraqis, Code Name: Johnny Walker reveals a side of the war that has never been told before.

Book Paul Newman

Download or read book Paul Newman written by Eric Lax and published by Turner Publications Incorporated. This book was released on 1996 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1954, by then a successful Broadway actor, Newman launched his film career - disastrously - as Basil the slave in The Silver Chalice. Yet before long he would be considered not only a fine actor but one of the sexiest men in films. Eventually determined to control his own career, Newman broke away from the old studio system, which dictated what roles an actor could take, and with astute choices in scripts and directors, he ultimately established a screen presence that has remained both popular and respected. From Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Hustler to The Sting and Slap Shot, and on to the The Color of Money, Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, and the recent Nobody's Fool, Paul Newman has demonstrated again and again how versatile and compelling an actor he is." "In films that Newman directed, such as Rachel, Rachel and Harry and Son, which starred Joanne Woodward, his wife of nearly forty years, ordinary people attempt to make sense of their lives. In contrast, this most unordinary man has lived a life of remarkable achievement on the stage and in cinema, has won four national amateur race car titles, devoted himself to political activism, and started a nonprofit food business, Newman's Own, that so far has donated nearly $70 million to worthy causes. Drawing on interviews with Newman and others who have worked with him, Eric Lax has succeeded in bringing out the real man from behind the enduring screen image."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Marriage Writing and Romanticism

Download or read book Marriage Writing and Romanticism written by Eric C. Walker and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage, Writing, and Romanticism studies marriage in two sets of literary texts from the Regency decade: the novels of Jane Austen—who avoided marriage in her own life but seems to have written about nothing else—and a set of non-canonical and generally unfamiliar poems by William Wordsworth, who seems never to turn to the subject of his own marriage. With other Romantic writers who also figure in this study, Austen and Wordsworth confronted the impossibility of writing about anything other than marriage and the imperative either to celebrate or condemn it. Thanks to the latest scholarly editions of Wordsworth, Walker introduces previously undiscussed material. Walker reads conjugality as the compulsory ground of modern identity, an Enlightenment legacy we still grapple with today, and offers new perspectives on literature through the writing of Austen and Wordsworth and theories of marriage in Godwin, Wollstonecraft, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and, in our time, Adam Phillips and Stanley Cavell.

Book Fryderyk Chopin

Download or read book Fryderyk Chopin written by Dr. Alan Walker and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. The Sunday Times (U.K.) Classical Music Book of 2018 and one of The Economist's Best Books of 2018. "A magisterial portrait." --Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, The New York Times Book Review A landmark biography of the Polish composer by a leading authority on Chopin and his time Based on ten years of research and a vast cache of primary sources located in archives in Warsaw, Paris, London, New York, and Washington, D.C., Alan Walker’s monumental Fryderyk Chopin: A Life and Times is the most comprehensive biography of the great Polish composer to appear in English in more than a century. Walker’s work is a corrective biography, intended to dispel the many myths and legends that continue to surround Chopin. Fryderyk Chopin is an intimate look into a dramatic life; of particular focus are Chopin’s childhood and youth in Poland, which are brought into line with the latest scholarly findings, and Chopin’s romantic life with George Sand, with whom he lived for nine years. Comprehensive and engaging, and written in highly readable prose, the biography wears its scholarship lightly: this is a book suited as much for the professional pianist as it is for the casual music lover. Just as he did in his definitive biography of Liszt, Walker illuminates Chopin and his music with unprecedented clarity in this magisterial biography, bringing to life one of the nineteenth century’s most confounding, beloved, and legendary artists.

Book Is Atheism Dead

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eric Metaxas
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2021-10-19
  • ISBN : 1684512093
  • Pages : 430 pages

Download or read book Is Atheism Dead written by Eric Metaxas and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Atheism Dead? is an entertaining, impressively wide-ranging, and decidedly provocative answer to that famous 1966 TIME cover that itself provocatively asked “Is God Dead?” In a voice that is by turns witty, muscular, and poetic, Metaxas intentionally echoes C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton in cheerfully and logically making his astonishing case, along the way presenting breathtaking—and often withering—new evidence and arguments against the idea of a Creatorless universe. Taken all together, he shows atheism not merely to be implausible and intellectually sloppy, but now demonstrably ridiculous. Perhaps the only unanswered question on the subject is why we couldn’t see this sooner, and how embarrassed we should be about it.
