Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Times of Daniel O'connell, Vol. 1: With Sketches of His Contemporaries The review shall contain many anecdotes of the Irish court which were never published, and which were so secret that his grace will not fail to be surprised at the sight of them in a newspaper. If the administration of the Duke of Richmond had been conducted with more than ordinary talent, its errors might, in some degree, have been atoned for by its ability, and the people of Ireland, though they might have much to regret, yet would have something to admire; but truly, after the gravest con sideration, they must find themselves at a loss to discover any Striking feature in his grace's administration that makes it superior to the worst of his predecessors.' As the Solicitor-General laid down a doctrine of law, O'Connell contemptuously cried out, with his mouth full of bread and milk: "That's not law!" The bench, which was appealed to by Doherty, ruled with O'Connell. Again and again the Solicitor-General was interrupted by O'Connell with a sneer at his law, and again and again the decision of the judges confirmed the point of the prisoners' advocate. The same story was told, the same testimony was produced, as on the first trial. But O'Connell was there to confuse the independent witnesses, to confound the approvers, to brow-beat the Solicitor-General. To his face O'Connell mimicked Doherty's manner. "You may go down, sir," said the Solicitor-General, waving his hand contemptuously to one of the prisoners' witnesses, and pronouncing the words in an aristocratic drawl. "Naw! daun't go daune, sir!" cried O'Connell, ludicrously burlesquing the voice and pronunciation of his adversary. Another time the Solicitor-General said: "The allegation is made upon false facts." "False facts?" cried O'Connell. "What a bull! How can facts be false?" The SolicitorGeneral retorted: "I have known false facts, and false men too." "Yes," replied O'Connell. "Your case and yourself." All through the trial a running fire of altercation was kept up between the opposing counsel, but in such a contest of colloquial sarcasm and vituperation victory was easy to O'Connell. The case for the Crown entirely collapsed. Nowlan, one of the chief approvers, trembling under the stress of O'Connell's relentless cross-examination, which made him contradict himself at every turn, broke out with the hysterical exclamation: ...

Book Daniel O connell

Download or read book Daniel O connell written by Arthur Houston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daniel O'connell: His Early Life, and Journal, 1795 to 1802 At first blush the Journal is disappointing. It issingularly wanting in references to the matters upon which one would naturally expect it to enlarge, o'connell's call to the Irish bar, his early successes, the rebellion of 1798, the Union, for example. With the exception of the rebellion of 1798, which is mentioned as having been the subject of a conversation between o'connell and his friend Richard Newton Bennett, not one of these things is alluded to. But if the Journal fails to satisfy the reader's curiosity upon matters such as these, it makes up for the omission by giving him full information as to the works which o'connell studied between the ages of twenty-one and twenty-seven, that is to say, the most impressionable period of a man's life, and by letting him into the secret of the objects which o'connell set before him and the principles by which he proposed to regulate his conduct. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Daniel O'connell Gladstone said of o'connell, He was the greatest popular leader whom the world has ever seen. That, I think, exactly describes o'connell's position in the world's history. His place is among the immortal. Leaders of humanity. He was really the first of political agitators. He was ww. Wee - influence is y no means confined to his native country. His teachings have modified the political ideas of the world. Before his time it was generally accepted that great reforms could only be wrested from the govern ing classes by brute force. He showed how the bounds of freedom might be enlarged without any violent subversion of law or authority. He was the inventor of popular agitation, as it is now pursued in all constitutionally governed countries - that system by which the will of the people, as regards the making of laws, the removal of abuses, the granting of reforms, finds expression in political, social, and trade organisations, with scattered branches under a central executive, and members subscribing to a common fund; in the registration of voters, and in meet ings and demonstrations and processions, with bands and banners. He brought the people, the democracy, the crowd, into the political arena, dictating the policy of States to Kings and Parliaments. Great. Indeed, is the world's debt to o'connell for the orderly progress of liberty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
