Book The Life and Teaching of Tuk r m

Download or read book The Life and Teaching of Tuk r m written by James Nelson Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Teaching of Tukārām This book was promised many years ago by the late Professor James Nelson Fraser, Principal of the Training College in Bombay for Teachers in Secondary Schools, who passed away after but a few days' illness on March 12, 1918, and some eighty pages may be regarded as coming from his pen. They are distributed among the first eight chapters as follows: six pages in chapter I, five in chapter II, six in III, twenty-three in IV, seven in V, five in IV, six in VII, twenty in VIII and two in appendix II. These pages I have carefully worked over and rewritten in the light of the latest findings, but whenever possible I have allowed his material to stand unchanged: e.g., page 28, the first half of page 32, and the third paragraph on page 123 are almost exactly as I found them. His one desire was 'to add a brick to the fabric of oriental learning', as he wrote in a letter three years before his untimely death. For the remainder of the book, over two hundred pages, including the whole of the last two chapters and appendices I, III-V, as well as the footnotes throughout the work, I must accept full responsibility. Often has it seemed as if the many claims of work in a city like Bombay would preclude the completion of the task, but the preparation of a great part of the book for lectures to the Language School at Mahabaleshwar has helped to make it possible, and I have been sustained by the two-fold conviction that study of India's poet-saints is a sure road to unity between East and West, and is a master-key to unlock the treasures of religious aspiration in the soul of India. Numerous and generous have been my helpers, their generosity being indicated by the fact that some prefer to remain anonymous. Some obligations must, however, be discharged. Book excerpt: Mokashi is a Marathi novelist of the post-independence generation of “Realists.” This is a vivid account of his day-by-day experience on the Warkari pilgrimage from Alandi to Pandharpur on foot. Pilgrimage is one of the most visible and pervasive features of Hinduism. Every year the Warkaris carry palanquins, called palkhis, bearing sandals representing the feet of their saints from various towns to Pandharpur in Maharashtra—to the Temple of Vitoba. Mokashi accompanied the oldest and most revered of the palanquin processions, the palkhi of Jnaneshwar Maharaj, on its two-week journey. His account is the only sustained view of the pilgrimage in any language.

Book excerpt: The Maratha people can point with pride to many of their poet-saints who were women of literary ability, wise in philosophy and godly in character. Bahina Bai is one of them. The present work introduces this saint-poetess whose autobiography and verses have been known to but a few outside Maharashtra. The author has not attempted to translate all the verses of Bahina Bai. Instead, he has chosen such portions as seemed best adapted to give to the English reader the thoughts of this Indian woman that found expression in her verses nearly three hundred years ago. Bahina`s autobiography, unique in Marathi literature, supplies all that is known of her. But it covers only the details of her early years. For her later years with their mental struggles, temptations, perplexities and thoughts of approaching death one has to gather from her verses such details as she has made possible.
