Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Reign of William the Fourth, Vol. 2 of 2 Ir was generally expected, even by ministers themselves, that the Regent would have made an immediate change in the cabinet. In this, however, the people were greatly disappointed. The first act of the Prince, on entering upon the duties of his important station, was, to inform Mr. Perceval, that he had no intention to remove any of his Majesty's official servants. His Royal Highness added, that he was led to form this resolution, from a dread lest any act of the Regent might, in the smallest degree, have the effect of interfering with the progress of his sovereign's recovery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of William IV, Vol. 2 of 2: Including a View of Social Life and Manners During His Reign During this interval it may be conceived that nothing was omitted to work up the feelings of the populace, SO as to furnish support to the ministry in the struggle. The populace had long been ripe for tumult and agita tion under the instruction of proficient agitators of a curiously coarse but vigorous type, conspicuous speci mens of which were Mr. Cobbett and Mr. Orator Hunt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Reign of William the Fourth, Vol. 1 of 2 Passing from the rank of a disciplined, brave, and accomplished sailor, the Prince entered upon a life of privacy and seclusion, during which period few of his actions transpired beyond the sphere of his personal acquaintance, or were known without the limits of his peaceful dwelling. In this enviable position, he exhibited the same gentleness of manner, benevolence of disposi tion, easiness of approach, and genuine philanthropy, which marked the character of the youthful sailor, the honoured prince, and the humane senator. For many years past there have appeared innumerable volumes of Memoirs and Recollections, in which are given many dramatic scenes and sketches connected with eminent personages. These often make but a small portion of the volumes in question, and, buried in a mass of less interesting matter, are soon forgotten. It is certainly. A gain to have such little sketches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Life and Reign of George the Fourth, Vol. 3 of 3 The violent proceeding adapted by the regent, and the extremity to which it drove the princess, created an extraordinary sensation. NO doubt was or could reasonably be entertained, that the occur rence was an emanation from the domestic quarrel between the prince and princess of Wales. The daughter took part with her mother in the dispute, and, it was understood, saw her clandestinely, in violation of the restrictions of the privy council. It was also said, that the negotiation of a treaty of marriage between the princess Charlotte and the hereditary prince of Orange, so near its conclusion as to be oflicially announced in Holland, was de feated through the influence of the princess of Wales. Whatever were the motives Of th'e young princess, - whether regard for her mother, whom the prince of Orange was said to have personally slighted, or an attachment to the person who after wards became her husband, and had come to England in the suite of the allied sovereigns, one fact was certain, that she rejected the prince of Orange, thereby provoking the displeasure of her father, and thwarting the measures of his go vernment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of George the Fourth, Vol. 2: Including His Letters and Opinions, With a View of the Men, Manners, and Politics of His Reign In January, 1809, the public were to be entertained and shocked by another unfortunate scandal connected with the Duke of York. It is hardly desirable to revive the well-known business of Mrs. Clarke, or of Colonel Wardle and other performers in the business; and we shall pass it over as lightly as possible. Never was there an affair so unlucky for all concerned - for the Duke himself, the royal family, the ministry, and the public - who, though by this time prepared to accept any amount of scandal, were shocked at the revelations now made. One Colonel Wardle, a Member of Parliament, was the industrious agent in bringing forward the matter. It was the fashion to make her out to be a person of no education, but she could write well, and there was issued in 1798 a prospectus of a poem, called "Ianthe," for the bene t of Colonel Frederick's daughters and children, dedicated to the Prince of Wales, by Miss C1arke. Mrs. Clarke was a daughter or god-daughter of the unfortunate "Colonel Frederick," son of the ill-fated Theodore of Corsica. Curiously enough, Colonel Frederick seems to have been employed by the royal brothers in negotiating their Dutch loan. It was undisputed that this lady had engaged in the trafficking of promotions in the army. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from When William IV. Was King Several Life and Times of William IV. Have been written, but they all contain a great deal of Life, and very little Times. The present book reverses this, and deals, primarily, with the chief topics of conversation during the seven years of King William's reign, and, afterwards, with the social aspect of the times. Although I treat of a period but sixty years since, it is a time of which much is to be said which is unknown to the present generation, and one which has had a deep and lasting influence on our own times. Then began the mighty reign of steam; then was inaugurated the first passenger railway, to which small beginning England owes so much. Then, too. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Four Georges and of William IV, Vol. 1 of 2 Palatine Of the Rhine, and her life was crossed and thwarted by the Opening Of the Thirty Years' War, and then 'by the misfortunes Of her brother Charles and his dynasty. Elizabeth survived the English troubles and'saw the Restoration, and came to live in England, and to see her nephew, Charles the Second, reign as king. She barely saw this. Two years after the Restoration she died in London. Sophia was her twelfth_child she had thirteen in all. One Of Sophia's elder brothers was Prince Rupert, that Rupert Of the Rhine, Of whom Macaulay's ballad says that, Rupert never comes but to conquer or to die, the Rupert whose daring and irresistible charges generally won his half Of the battle only that the other half might be lost, and that his success might be swallowed up in the ruin Of his companions. His headlong bravery was a misfortune rather than an advantage to his cause, and there seems to have been one instance, that Of the sur render of'bt'istol, in which that bravery deserted him for the moment. We see him afterwards, in the pages Of Pepys, an uninteresting, prosaic, pedantic figure, usefully employed in scientific experiments, and with all the gilt' washed Off him by time and years and the commonplace wear and tear of routine life. This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Four Georges and of William IV, Vol. 3 of 4 For six and forty years England had been ruled by German princes. One Elector of Hanover named George had been succeeded by another Elector of Hanover named George, and George the First and George the Second, George the father and George the son, resembled each other in being by nature German rather than English, and by inclination Electors of Hanover rather than Kings of England. Against each of them a Stuart prince had raised a standard and an army. George the First had his James Francis Edward, who called himself James the Third, and whom his opponents called the Pretender, by a translation which gave an injurious signification to the French word "pretendant." George the Second had his Charles Edward, the Young Pretender who a generation later led an invading army well into England before he had to turn and fly for his life. A very different condition of things awaited the successor of George the Second. George the Second's grandson was an English prince and an Englishman. He was born in England; his father was born in England; his native tongue was the English tongue; and if he was Elector of Hanover, that seemed an accident.
