Book The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay Classic Reprint written by Epes Sargent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay The first edition of this work appeared, during the autumn of 1842, at which time, there was no published memoir of Mr. Clay (so far as the writer's knowledge extended) except that by George D. Prentice, Esq., which terminates with the close of John Quincy Adams's administration. To this eloquent biographical sketch, the Author takes pleas ure in acknowledging his indebtedness, for a number of interesting facts. The new and improved edition of his life or clay, now offered to the public, has been carefully revised - some errors have been corrected - several omissions have been supplied - awl the Memoir has been brought down to the spring of 1848. It is hardly necessary to say, that the portrait; which accompanies this edition, is from a painting by linen, taken some twenty years since. It was regarded as a like ness at that time. E. S. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Public Services of Henry Clay: Down to 1848 The aim of Mr. Sargent was not so much to impart his own conception of Mr. Clay's views and motives as to enable every reader to infer them directly from the 'statesman's own words, or those of his illustrious cotemporaries - whether compatriots or rivals. His work, therefore, is rather a collection of authentic materials for the future biographer than an original and exhaustive essay. For the time had not arrived - nay, has not yet arrived - for a final and authoritative analysis of Mr. Clay's character, nor for a conclusive estimate of the nature, value, tendencies. D. 1852, at Weldon, North Carolina, Upon Invitation In 1820, he said: Friendly as I am to the existence of domestic manufactures, I would not give to them unreason able encouragement by protecting duties. Their growth ought to be gradual, but sure. It was a further principle of that system, announced by him in 1833, that, after the accumulation of capital and skill, the manufacturers would stand alone, unaided by govern ment, in competition with the imported articles from any quarter of the world. Finally, it was an additional principle of the system to pro bibit the importation of nothing by protection, but, in impose ing the duties laid for revenue, to adjust them so as to afford incidental protection to our own home industry. If these be worthy, and the record simple, time, which destroys all things but good deeds and lofty thoughts, will embalm them for eternity. If they be base, eulogy adds a lie to their deformities, and they must perish of their own disease. In the spirit of this truth we address ourselves to the task before us.
