This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of William Thomson, Archbishop of York It is with a sense of deep obligation that I have to tender my sincere thanks to a number of friends for their generous help in the compilation of this book. His Grace the Archbishop of York not only gave me free access to the MSS. at Bishopthorpe, but consented to the reproduction of the portrait of Dr. Thomson which forms the frontispiece. To the Bishop of Beverley and Mrs. Crosthwaite I am indebted for their reading of my manuscript, for making suggestions, and giving me facts of much value. The Rev. Canon Watson, Sub-Dean of York Minster, kindly lent me various books; the late Dr. Ramsay, Chamberlain, York Minster, gave permission for a photograph to be taken of Dr. Thomson's monument; Mr. D. L. Pressly, editor of the Yorkshire Herald, not only placed the files of that journal at my disposal, but made many researches for me. Mr. R. A. D. Booker assisted me on many occasions; Mr. H. Annesley Voysey generously permitted the publication of the letters of his father, the late Rev. Charles Voysey, and Captain St. Clair Harnett, Mr. J. T. Hildyard, and Miss Edith Milner, all helped in various ways towards the completion of this record. The late Mrs. Thomson (widow of Archbishop Thomson) provided much valuable material on which to work, and I have also been indebted to her daughter, Mrs. John Rennie, for many papers and photographic negatives, from which to make illustrations. My husband has supplied many anecdotes and personal reminiscences, besides reading the work in manuscript and making innumerable useful suggestions. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs, Vol. 1 of 2 This Biography was begun in June 1906 with the kind co-operation of Lord Kelvin, who himself furnished a number of personal recollections and data. His death in December 1907 affected the project of the work by necessarily extending its scope to present a much more comprehensive account of his career than the sketch originally planned. The mass of letters, diaries, and other documents which he left became available for filling in the outlines, and the task of arrangement and selection from these greatly extended the period of preparation. The sympathy which has been so universally felt for Lady Kelvin in her prolonged illness and gradual recovery has manifested itself in many ways; and various friends have lightened for the author the responsibility of dealing with the available materials out of which to frame an authentic record of Lord Kelvin's long and strenuous career. Download or read book The Life of William Thomson written by Silvanus Phillips Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of William Thomson: Baron Kelvin of Largs Whatever of the above is to be had best from Belfast, will you order it for me? For the rest, any hints you can give will be gratefully received. I am not unconscious (but as much as possible the reverse) that I am asking a very great benefit, and taking advantage to the utmost of the promise you gave me to help me, when I write so troublesome a list of wants. But you must allow me absolutely to restrict your kind ness to-ordering the things for me, and directing that the hemming and marking be done by the people who supply them, and who certainly will, if required, find persons ready to undertake those works. The Committee on Ships of War will continue its sittings during May, and I am afraid much of June, partly in London and partly at sea with the Channel Fleet. So I must give up Teneriffe for this year, which I do with great regret. Will you tell Guthriel that I hope for another visit from him before May, as we got scarcely anything of the books done last time, there was so much time wasted on tops, etc. Could he not come from Ap. 18 to 27, which would include an opening cruise of the L. R. To Arran, Friday till Monday P - Yours always truly, william thomson. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
