Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Alfred Ainger The only reason for writing any preface to this little volume is that it provides me with a means of giving thanks to those who have helped me by criticisms and suggestions, and by their memories of Canon Ainger. I therefore take this occasion of expressing my great gratitude to Mr. Birrell, to Dr. Ward (Master of Peterhouse), to Mr. Gosse, to Mr. Horace Smith, to Mr. R. C. Browne, to Mr. Birdwood, to Canon Beeching, and to Mr. E. V. Lucas, for the valuable assistance they have given me. I have also to convey my thanks to those who have enabled me to print so many letters from Canon Ainger, as well as some written to him; and in this connection I should like to acknowledge the courtesy of Mr. A. C. Swinburne in allowing me to publish a letter written by himself. My thanks are no less due to Messrs. Murray, and to the Editor of the Quarterly, for consenting that I should embody in this book some parts of an article, 'Canon Ainger,' which I wrote for that periodical in January 1905; and to Messrs. Macmillan for giving me permission to make use of extracts from Canon Ainger's published works. Also to Miss Johnston, who has allowed me to reproduce the photographs privately taken by her - the two of Alfred Ainger in his youth, as well as the one of his father. Book The Victorian Church Part Two

Download or read book The Victorian Church Part Two written by Owen Chadwick and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Chadwick completes his study of the Victorian Church with detailed accounts of the problems which confronted the Church in the latter part of the nineteenth century: the question of science and religion, the acceptance of biblical criticism, the Church in village and town, changes in the attitude to the episcopacy, relationship with the Roman Catholics, and the growth of secularization. The material is organized in masterly fashion, the style of writing is characteristically engaging, and the innumerable sidelights on people in high and low places are as illuminating and relevant as in Part I of this work. The two volumes together provide an understanding of the background of many of the problems, which the Church faces today. For this second edition, Professor Chadwick has made many minor revisions to the text and included a number of additional bibliographical references.

Book J Henry Shorthouse the Author of John Inglesant

Download or read book J Henry Shorthouse the Author of John Inglesant written by Charles W. Spurgeon and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When J. Henry Shorthouse (1834-1903) published John Inglesant in 1881, he contributed a unique synthesis of Anglo-Catholic sensibilities to the enduring legacy of the Oxford Movement. Although his "philosophical romance" has been acclaimed "the greatest Anglo-Catholic novel in English literature" and "the one English novel that speaks immediately to human intuition without regard to the reader's own faith or philosophy", his most enduring contributions are the "religion of John Inglesant", an Anglo-Catholic synthesis of obedience and freedom, faith and reason, and the sacramental vision of "the myth of Little Gidding". Afflicted with a lifelong stammer, "the author of John Inglesant" proved himself a master of cadenced rhythms and "enspiritualised" prose in quest of "the great musical novel". Delineating parallels between sixteenth-century and Victorian England, Shorthouse integrated Quietism with Platonism into a religious aesthetic, a sacramental vision of "the Divine Principle of the Platonic Christ". Studied chronologically, Shorthouse's transition from Quaker to "Broad Church Sacramentalist" provides informing comparison with T. S. Eliot's conversion from Unitarian to Anglo-Catholic, as his myth of Little Gidding informs the historical imagination of Eliot's Christian poetry and dramas. The religious and developmental nature of the work of both artists affords analogies with C. G. Jung's psychology of Individuation.
