Book excerpt: The fascinating but ultimately tragic tale of Mary, Queen of Scots, holds eternal appeal. In this beautifully illustrated book, now available in paperback, Susan Watkins re-creates the world in which Mary lived - the landscapes, the palaces and the courtly culture, and the fine details of the domestic scene - in vivid word pictures, which give life to the wealth of historical illustrations and specially taken photographs by Mark Fiennes, who accompanied Susan Watkins on her journey in search of the true story behind the Queen across three countries.

Book Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley

Download or read book Mary Queen of Scots and the Murder of Lord Darnley written by Alison Weir and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Alison Weir's Mary Boleyn. Handsome, accomplished, and charming, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, staked his claim to the English throne by marrying Mary Stuart, who herself claimed to be the Queen of England. It was not long before Mary discovered that her new husband was interested only in securing sovereign power for himself. Then, on February 10, 1567, an explosion at his lodgings left Darnley dead; the intrigue thickened after it was discovered that he had apparently been suffocated before the blast. After an exhaustive reevaluation of the source material, Alison Weir has come up with a solution to this enduring mystery. Employing her gift for vivid characterization and gripping storytelling, Weir has written one of her most engaging excursions yet into Britain’s bloodstained, power-obsessed past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of Mary Queen of Scots: With an Historical Introduction and a Rare Portrait of the Queen The merit of unearthing the book-catalogue, which forms the foundation of the present work, does not belong to me. The manuscript was known to antiquaries at the beginning of this century, and that it had probably not escaped the notice of sir Walter Scott may be inferred from two references to Queen Mary's taste in books which occur in he story of 'The Abbot.' So far as I have been able to discover, the text of portion of the catalogue - that which enumerates the books preserved at the castle of Edinburgh - was first given to the curious in such matters by the well-known antiquary, Thomas Thomson. It appeared in the volume of 'Miscellanies' issued by the Maitland Club in 1834. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book My Heart is My Own

Download or read book My Heart is My Own written by John Guy and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-09-06 with total page 765 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now a major film, this is a dramatic reinterpretation of the life of Mary Queen of Scots by one of the leading historians of this period. For centuries, Mary, Queen of Scots has been a figure of scholarly debate. Where many have portrayed her as the weak woman to Elizabeth's rational leader, John Guy reassesses the young queen, finding her far more politically shrewd than previously believed. Crowned Queen of Scotland at nine months old, Queen of France by age sixteen and widowed the following year, Guy paints Mary as a commanding and savvy queen who navigated the European power struggles of the time to her advantage. Her life was one of drama and conflict - Scottish lords constructed labyrinthine plots to wrest power from her and attempts to prove her claim to the English throne were thwarted by English ministers bent on protecting Elizabeth. My Heart is My Own re-examines the original sources, resulting in a riveting new argument surrounding Mary's involvement in her husband Lord Darnely's murder and her subsequent marriage to his suspected assassin. Guy's accessible treatment of the well-trodden story, his deft storytelling and insightful new arguments provide compelling and dramatic reading. 'An absorbing biography . . . meticulously researched . . . scholarly and intriguing' Peter Ackroyd, The Times 'Rarely have first-class scholarship and first-class storytelling been so effectively combined' John Adamson, Daily Telegraph John Guy is an award-winning historian, accomplished broadcaster and a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. His previous books include the highly acclaimed dual biography A Daughter's Love: Thomas and Margaret More a history, Tudor England, which has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide and a biography of Thomas Becket, published in 2012.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret George's exhaustively researched novel skillfully weaves both historical fact and plausible fiction in bringing the story of Mary Queen of Scots to life. She was a child crowned a queen.... A sinner hailed as a saint.... A lover denounced as a whore... A woman murdered for her dreams... Margaret George's Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles brings to life the fascinating story of Mary, who became the Queen of Scots when she was only six days old. Raised in the glittering French court, returning to Scotland to rule as a Catholic monarch over a newly Protestant country, and executed like a criminal in Queen Elizabeth's England, Queen Mary lived a life like no other, and Margaret George weaves the facts into a stunning work of historical fiction. "With a seamless use of original letters, diaries, and poems: a popular, readable, inordinately moving tribute to a remarkable queen." -- Kirkus Reviews
