He turned to Islam and Sufism for inspiration when early in his life he rejected nationalism. In his final years he returned to Urdu from Persian with ghazals inspired by his Sufism. Makhfi (1638-1702) was the beautiful, talented daughter of the strict Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb. He imprisoned her for 20 years for her Sufi views.
