This introduces a logical element at slight infraction of the alphabet, and the nature of the matter to be indexed seemed to call for such method. Some abbreviations are used these are chicfly br., branch; co county cr., creek; fk., fork; Inds., Indians; isl., island; ldg., landing; mt., mts moun tain, mountains pra., prairie rap., rapid or rapids res., (indian) reservation r., river; spt., spring or springs; sta., station. Roman numerals all refer to Vol. I.; the unbroken pagination of the rest of the work renders reference by Vol. Needles in case of the arabic figures.
