Book The Poets and the Fathers

Download or read book The Poets and the Fathers written by Timothy E. G. Bartel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian poetry was born at the crossroads of the Greek, Hebrew, Roman, and Syrian cultures of late antiquity. Pioneered by poets like Ephrem the Syrian, Gregory Nazianzus, and Prudentius, a uniquely Christian poetry--and poetics--has flourished across history into the twenty-first century. In this series of essays, poet and literary scholar Timothy E. G. Bartel explores the often-overlooked genesis of Christian poetry in the fourth century AD, with a special emphasis on the poetics and cultural-theological vision of St. Gregory Nazianzus. Bartel then traces the influence of the inventors of Christian poetry to poets of more recent centuries, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, T. S. Eliot, C. S. Lewis, and Scott Cairns. It is in these poets of the last three centuries that we see the continual outworking of the ancient Christian poetic project and a blueprint for the future of a literature that continues to learn from the church fathers and the theological traditions of Christianity.

Book The Crisis of Religious Liberty

Download or read book The Crisis of Religious Liberty written by Stephen M. Krason and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Crisis of Religious Liberty:Reflections from Law, History, and Catholic Social Thought, contributors consider a series of significant challenges to the freedom of religious conscience and expression in the United States today. Such challenges include the mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services concerning contraceptive, sterilization, and abortifacient coverage in health insurance plans; the question of health-care institutions requiring medical personnel to participate in morally objectionable procedures contrary to their religious beliefs; legal liability for individuals and businesses refusing on religious grounds to provide services for same-sex marriages; the prohibition on students from engaging in religious expression in public schools; the use of zoning laws to block Bible studies in private homes; and a variety of other issues that have surfaced in recent years with respect to religious freedom. While some argues that religious liberty extends no further than the freedom to worship, contributors suggest otherwise, noting that the exercise of religious liberty is greater than a highly restrictive definition of the notion of worship. The Crisis of Religious Liberty comprises eight chapters and an afterword that explore the nature and basis of religious freedom in terms of Catholic social thought. They cover such topics as the Catholic Church's teachings from the Vatican II's Dignatis Humanae (Declaration on Religious Liberty), the decline of a historic rapprochement among different religious perspectives in the United States in the face of an increasingly aggressive secularism, perspectives on religious liberty from the founding of America, and how the religious liberty situation in the U.S. compares with the rest of the world. The Crisis of Religious Liberty:Reflections from Law, History, and Catholic Social Thought should appeal to a variety of professionals as well as a scholars: lawyers and clergy, health care professionals and Catholic business owners, and researchers in the fields of religion, law, American politics, and sociology.

Book The Letters

Download or read book The Letters written by John Greenleaf Whittier and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These letters of a man deeply concerned about his country, directly involved in political action, and torn, as the Civil War approached, by the conflict between his abolitionist zeal and his Quaker pacifism--letters here collected for the first time and many of them hitherto unpublished--shatter the stereotype of Whittier as "the good gray poet." The many letters to such figures as John Quincy Adams, Charles Sumner, and William Lloyd Garrison form a detailed record of the abolitionist movement from its inception to its merging with the Free Soil party in the 1850s. The first two volumes reproduce all the extant letters from 1828 to 1860, with full annotations. The last volume is selective, excluding several thousand perfunctory items and including only the historically or biographically interesting letters of the last three decades of the poet's life.

Book Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Samuel T. Pickard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of John Greenleaf Whittier, Vol. 1 of 2 The thought that at some time the story of his life would be called for was not a pleasant one to Mr. Whittier; but fearing that, in the absence of correct data, a biography full of inaccuracies might be given to the public, about ten years before his death he authorized the collection of material for such a work, and assisted the friend to whom it was confided by suggestions of a general character. He had never kept a journal, nor charged his memory with dates, but he remembered his correspondents, and gave information which resulted in a large collection of letters, illustrating nearly every year of his life. The editor has regarded the use of this material as a sacred trust, and in accordance with Mr. Whittier's wish has allowed him, as far as practicable, to speak for himself. In editorial work, and in his correspondence, he always expressed himself freely upon every subject which interested him.
