Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Lady Mary's Complete Letters includes the brilliant series to her sister Lady Mar, now for the first time edited entirely from the original manuscripts; the long, varied series to Lady Pomfret, from England as well as the Continent; the dutiful letters, many previously unprinted, to her husband about her travels and about her children; and the series to Lady Oxford, annotated from Lady Oxford's own manuscripts. Of the new correspondences, the most significant are her letters to Francesco Algarotti, which reveal new aspects of her personality and of her art as a letter-writer, and me ample series (in French) to Madame Chiara Bragadin Michiel, a Venetian lady, which displays her graciousness sparked with flashes of wit.

Book excerpt: Immensely learned, self-educated in an era when formal schooling was denied to women, Mary Wortley Montagu was an admired poet, a consistently scandalous doyenne of eighteenth-century London society, and, in a period when letter-writing had been elevated to an art form, one of the greatest letter writers in the English language. Her epistles, meant for both public and private consumption, are the product of a mind distinguished by its adventurousness, its indifference to convention, and its eagerness not only to acquire knowledge but to convey it with unmitigated style and grace. Download or read book The Scottish Enlightenment Abroad written by Janet Starkey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Scottish Enlightenment Abroad, Janet Starkey examines the lives and works of Scots working in the mid eighteenth century with the Levant Company in Aleppo, then within the Ottoman Empire; and those working with the East India Company in India, especially in the fields of natural history, medicine, ethnography and the collection of Arabic and Persian manuscripts. The focus is on brothers from Edinburgh: Alexander Russell MD FRS, Patrick Russell MD FRS, Claud Russell and William Russell FRS. By examining a wide range of modern interpretations, Starkey argues that the Scottish Enlightenment was not just a philosophical discourse but a multi-faceted cultural revolution that owed its vibrancy to ties of kinship, and to strong commercial and intellectual links with Europe and further abroad.

Download or read book Jane Austen and the Enlightenment written by Peter Knox-Shaw and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen was received by her contemporaries as a new voice, but her late twentieth-century reputation as a nostalgic reactionary still lingers on. In this radical revision of her engagement with the culture and politics of her age, Peter Knox-Shaw argues that Austen was a writer steeped in the Enlightenment, and that her allegiance to a sceptical tradition within it, shaped by figures such as Adam Smith and David Hume, lasted throughout her career. Knox-Shaw draws on archival and other neglected sources to reconstruct the intellectual atmosphere of the Steventon Rectory where Austen wrote her juvenilia, and follows the course of her work through the 1790s and onwards, showing how minutely responsive it was to the many shifting movements of those turbulent years. Jane Austen and the Enlightenment is an important contribution to the study both of Jane Austen and of intellectual history at the turn of the nineteenth century.
