Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The encounter between knight and science could seem a paradox. It is nonetheless related with the intellectual Renaissance of Twelfth-Century, an essential movement for Western history. The knight is not only fighting in battles, but also moving in sophisticated courts. He is interested on Latin classics and reading, and even on his own poetry. He supports "jongleurs" and minstrels and he likes to have literary conversations with clerics, who try to reform his behaviour, which is often brutal. These lettered warriors, while improving they culture, learn how to repress their own violence and they are initiated to courtesy: selected language, measured gestures, elegance in dress, and manners at table. Their association with women, who are often learned, becomes more gallant. A mental revolution is acting among lay elites, who, in contact with clergy, use their weapons for common welfare. This new conduct is a sign of modernity.

It is nonetheless related with the Twelfth-Century Renaissance, an essential intellectual movement for western history. Knights not only fought in battles, but also moved in sophisticated courts. Knights were interested in Latin classics, and reading and writing poetry. Supportive of ?jongleurs? and minstrels, they enjoyed literary conversations with clerics who would attempt to reform their behaviour, which was often brutal. These lettered warriors, while improving their culture, learned to repress their own violence and were initiated to courtesy: selective language, measured gestures, elegance in dress, and manners at the table. Their association with women, who were often learned, became more gallant. A revolution of thought occurred among lay elites who, in contact with clergy, began to use their weapons for common welfare. This new conduct was a tangible sign of Medievalist society?s leap forward towards modernity. This monograph contains a great deal of detailed information about the attitudes towards learning and written culture among members of the nobility in different parts of Europe in the Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: MEN IN BLACK AT THE REN FAIRE! John Rast went to the Ren Faire looking for a fight. Well, a simulated fight, with blunt swords and safety equipment. But when his final opponent turns into a living, fire-breathing dragon, John finds himself in the fight of his life. It’s John or nothing stopping a disaster in its tracks—and the only real weapon at hand is his mom’s Volvo. So John decides to let it roll . . . And that's when destiny comes to call. John is spirited away to the well-hidden base of Knight Watch, the organization that stands between humanity and the real nasties the rest of the world doesn’t know about. Knight Watch would be John’s dream job—except for the storm goddess that destroys his parents’ house, the abandoned mall replete with too much dead, and the Fetch that aims to make John’s domain a final resting place. All this has John’s putative allies in the Knight Watch worried that John is the one bringing bad things into multiple worlds. John and his reluctant teammates have to figure out who, or what, is pulling the strings before all of Knight Watch falls prey to a well-concealed puppetmaster and far worse things enter this world. Book The Curse of Knight s Island

Download or read book The Curse of Knight s Island written by Sidney St. James and published by BeeBop Publishing Group. This book was released on 1900 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Curse of Knight's Island Alles Gute zum Geburtstag A Romance Mystery & Suspense Thriller The old woman sat there dominated by a sense of profound sadness. Fatigue etched on her worn face. She warmed her shivering hands against the crackling fire. The sorrow grew more extreme each year she spent in her quiet and lonely house. The solemn walls continued to revive the memory of her daughter's death encountered at the hands of a member of a wealthy Knight Family descendant. She stood frozen in front of her mirror and saw the deceiving hollow soul that reflected in the tear-stained looking glass. The marks left no room to see her true self any longer. All that remained was a shell of a woman, a woman wasted away. As she gazed into the mirror she reminded herself again of the curse left behind for the gruesome murder of her daughter. The curse was spoken by the old woman in the year 1567 to the man she blamed for her daughter's murder. It still echoed over many generations of the Knight Family history. "When one Knight family member spends three years on this Island, or two, unneglected, unslighted, and never regretting having come, I forgive you to the extent of my very first curse." 'When the first marriage is loveless on both sides and unselfish on both sides, may that be the last marriage on which the second curse falls!" "When someone loves life and willingly gives it for a Knight in peril, gives it without thought of other glory or reward than the thanks of a Knight, let the third curse go away." Her terrible curse, which came true for five hundred years remained unbroken. But, will our famous detective, Vincent Gideon, come out of retirement, again, finally solve the curse before it's too late? Will he lose the woman he has loved his entire life? What about his son? Will he die a violent death as predicted in the Curse? So many unanswered questions. The first edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley published on New Year's Day in 1818 sat on the nightstand of John Pilkington, owner of the Portland Sentinel. There was something about this novel that intrigued the old recluse. By the time this romantic suspense ends, the famed detective's friend will have read the story at least a dozen times. Why?
