Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lesson of Popular Government, Vol. 1 Books, other than those for amusement, may be divided into didactic, historical, and argumentative. It is hardly necessary to say to which class the present work belongs. More than thirty years ago, in studies connected mainly with financial questions, my attention was attracted towards certain peculiarities in the political working of our institutions. Continued study and observation have greatly strengthened and extended the impressions then received. For those whose idea of patriotism is to boast unceasingly that ours are the only human institutions which have attained perfection, that any public expression of doubt or criticism is little less than treason, and that all shortcomings and misdeeds must be charged to the perversity and wickedness, or, at the very least, ignorance and folly, of the people, this book can have no meaning. He says he spied three suspicious characters on the way back to the courthouse and figuring they were the escaped jailbirds de cided to bring them in single hand ed. That he followed them into the swamp across the river and got lost. How he managed to find his way home just an hour after the convicts had been captured is still a mystery. However, his adherence to the theory that discretion is the better part Of valor has not deterred the boys around Dad Jones' gen eral merchandise store from de pending ou Uncle Pete for side lights on politics and world affairs. N ow many of Uncle Pete's facts are slightly distorted, but when he gives his comments on any subject you will usually find some good Old home-spun truth and philosophy hidden in them. Book Popular Government Vol 1

Download or read book Popular Government Vol 1 written by Albert Coates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Government, Vol. 1: January, 1931 Three years ago I told a friend I was planning to center my efforts on the teaching of criminal law administration in the University Law School. A surprised, even a suspicious look came into his eyes. And he told me that late in the eighties when Walter Henry thought of leaving the practice to write a book on criminal law, Judge Shipp remarked that any man worth his salt could learn all there was to be known about it in three weeks. This story has gone the rounds of the bar and still reflects the lawyer's attitude: that there is little or nothing to the criminal law, that the criminal prae tice is something for a lawyer to make a living out of until he is able to make a living out Of something else, that the criminal courts merely furnish a take Off for young lawyers in their first flights. Perhaps this explains the plight Of criminal law enforcement now. At the start I found the materials available for a course in criminal law administration were limited by academic tradition and scholarly convenience to legislative enactments and court decisions. Small fractions of the law in action. Too slender ties to bind the classroom to the courtroom, the law school to the law office, the teacher of criminal law administra tion to the administration of the criminal law. They needed supplements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
