Book excerpt: This book is the second in a series that covers more than 1,000 species of Macro Lepidoptera of Israel, with complete and up-to-date information about their taxonomy, distribution, habitat preferences, seasonal activity and host plant interactions. This series is the first of its kind within the entire Near East that aspires to fill in a significant gap in our knowledge about the moths and butterflies of this poorly studied region. Volume 2 summarizes information pertaining to 420 noctuid moth species currently recorded in Israel, illustrated with 38 life-sized color plates. In addition, maps of the distribution of each species throughout Israel are included. This book is complementary to the richly illustrated first volume that deals with 128 erebid species and contains 36 color plates representing the wide range of major habitat types in Israel. As well as being an important tool for butterfly and moth specialists, this book is also a good companion for nature conservationists, biogeographers, collectors and nature lovers. The Israeli Lepidoptera series aims to serve as the definitive guide for anyone interested in the nature of Israel, as well as of the Near East in general.

Book excerpt: This book is the first of a series to cover more than 1,000 species of Macro Lepidoptera of Israel, with complete and up-to-date information concerning their taxonomy, distribution, habitat preferences, seasonal activity and host plant interactions. The series is the first of its kind in the entire Near East, aiming to fill in a significant gap in our knowledge of the butterflies and moths of this still poorly studied region. Volume I summarizes evidence concerning 128 erebid moth species currently recorded in Israel, illustrated in live size on 12 color plates. In addition, the distribution of each species in the country is mapped. The book is richly illustrated with color photos on another 36 plates, representing a wide range of major habitat types of Israel. The book is an imminent tool for specialists in butterflies and moths, being topical also for nature conservationists and biogeographers, collectors and nature lovers. Download or read book The Book of Caterpillars written by David G. James and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For the lover of all things lepidopterous, The Book of Caterpillars is a beautifully curated collection and guide to 600 species from around the globe.” —The American Biology Teacher While most of us picture caterpillars as cute fuzzballs munching on leaves, there is much more to them than we imagine. A caterpillar’s survival hinges on finding enough food and defending itself from the array of natural enemies lined up to pounce and consume. And the astounding adaptations and strategies they have developed to maximize their chances of becoming a butterfly or moth are only just beginning to be understood, from the Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar that resembles a small snake to the Eastern Carpenter Bee Hawkmoth caterpillar that attempts to dissuade potential predators by looking like a diseased leaf. The Book of Caterpillars unveils the mysteries of six hundred species from around the world, introducing readers to the complexity and beauty of these underappreciated insects. With the advent of high-quality digital macrophotography, the world of caterpillars is finally opening up. The book presents a wealth of stunning imagery that showcases the astonishing diversity of caterpillar design, structure, coloration, and patterning. Each entry also features a two-tone engraving of the adult specimen, emphasizing the wing patterns and shades, as well as a population distribution map and table of essential information that includes their habitat, typical host plants, and conservation status. Throughout the book are fascinating facts that will enthrall expert entomologists and curious collectors alike. A visually rich and scientifically accurate guide to six hundred of the world’s most peculiar caterpillars, this volume presents readers with a rare, detailed look at these intriguing forms of insect life.

Download or read book Introduction to the series Archiearinae Oenochrominae Geometrinae written by Axel Hausmann and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lepidoptera are without doubt the best known insect order in today’s Europe. Nevertheless there is still a great lack of knowledge in some groups, such as the Geometridae. The northern and central European fauna is relatively well known, but the distribution and bionomics of a number of species are poorly known. This problem is much more marked in southern Europe where no books on Geometridae have been published for nearly a century. Data on the bionomics are frequently unavailable which makes it difficult to assess environmental threats to the geometrid species. Information on distribution is still grossly incomplete and many records have been based on misidentifications. These problems are mainly caused by the lack of comprehensive identification literature. The geographical area covered in this series ranges from North Cape to Gibraltar and Malta, and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Ural Mountains. Each volume will illustrate the adults of all species, and if possible also subspecies, in photographic colour plates of the highest quality. Sexual dimorphism as well as polymorphism will be illustrated. Most species will be shown at natural size, but some larger groups of small species such as the genera Idaea and Eupithecia will be shown enlarged.
Download or read book Lepidoptera and Conservation written by T. R. New and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third in a trilogy of global overviews of conservation of diverse and ecologically important insect groups. The first two were Beetles in Conservation (2010) and Hymenoptera and Conservation (2012). Each has different priorities and emphases that collectively summarise much of the progress and purpose of invertebrate conservation. Much of the foundation of insect conservation has been built on concerns for Lepidoptera, particularly butterflies as the most popular and best studied of all insect groups. The long-accepted worth of butterflies for conservation has led to elucidation of much of the current rationale of insect species conservation, and to definition and management of their critical resources, with attention to the intensively documented British fauna ‘leading the world’ in this endeavour. In Lepidoptera and Conservation, various themes are treated through relevant examples and case histories, and sufficient background given to enable non-specialist access. Intended for not only entomologists but conservation managers and naturalists due to its readable approach to the subject.

Book excerpt: The Zygaeninae (burnets) are diurnal, aposematic moths which occur in the Palaearctic, Oriental and Afrotropical regions. The unusual biology of this small subfamily of fewer than 120 species has inspired research on their ecology, chemical ecology, pheromone biology, ethology and mimicry, in addition to systematics, life history, larval host plants, genetics and geographical and individual variation. This bibliography of about 2750 entries has been checked against the original publications and is as complete as possible to the end of 1986. It is comprehensively indexed by subject and bibliography reference number.
