Nearly all the boys returned promptly on the day appointed for opening, and took up their tasks again for the winter term. As it was so soon after our last publication and as there were few items of importance for January, we deemed it better to print a fairly presentable number for February rather than a poor one for January. However, there is much, much more to working with textures than simply merging them with an image via Photoshop. In this gorgeous new guide from texture guru Sarah Gardner, you'll learn everything there is to know about how to maximize the potential of these exciting tools. In addition to hundreds of beautiful example images, this book is also packed with practical advice on what makes a good texture, and how and when to use them. How an image is initially captured and processed has a significant impact on the effect a texture will have, so you'll also learn what to consider when composing and shooting (rather than simply relying on post-processing) and how to use lighting and background considerations effectively for later work with textures. Workshop notes and a supplemental website will help you put Sarah's techniques into practice immediately. Beautiful enough to sit on your coffee table yet practical enough to store near your computer, this book will show you everything you need to know to get that coveted vintage-feel in your images, whether you're a casual family snapper or a seasoned professional.

Book Equal Before the Lens

Download or read book Equal Before the Lens written by Barbara McCandless and published by TAMU Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This album of historical photographs from a small Texas town captures for all time the various ethnic groups and immigrants who lived there from 1925 to 1945. From the late 1800s, almost every town in America supported at least one commercial photographer who inadvertently documented its history through formal portraits and special assignments around the community. Over the course of his career, Trlica, [son of] a Czech immigrant[s], built a similar visual archive of the social life of his adopted home of Granger, Texas. McCandless has done a very good job of selecting, arranging, and interpreting the photographs, all of which are reproduced in duotone. The result is a lovely and intriguing book. Equal Before the Lens will be of obvious interest and value in regional collections. However, because it deals with an overlooked area in American studies, it also deserves a place in social history and documentary photography collections. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. - Raymond Bial, Parkland Coll. Lib., Champaign, Ill. ©1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book: “A coming-of-age fantasy in a late-medieval alternate world . . . Possibly MacAvoy’s best work since the Damiano trilogy” (Kirkus Reviews). “In the absorbing, realistic world depicted in this first volume of a projected series, MacAvoy introduces Nazhuret who, looking back from middle age, tells of the adventures of his youth.” —Publishers Weekly An outcast of small stature and the offspring of unknown parents, Nazhuret is forced out of the military Royal School of Sordaling. He is soon taken under the wing of Powl, a mysterious mentor, madman, and master of optics, who pushes Nazhuret to his mental and physical limits while teaching him the arts of astronomy, languages, swordsmanship, and—most importantly—mind and body control. When Nazhuret take his leave of Powl, he embarks on a journey through war, darkness, and death, rising above his humble beginnings and taking his destiny into his own hands . . . “This is a plot and a theme and a character so rich that revelations would be unforgivable. Add to these one of the most surprising supporting characters and plots in years and a fantasy setting that is always intriguing but never intrusive and you have a book that readers won’t want to end.” —School Library Journal “Patiently and persistently describes the progress of a young man destined by fate to be a hero. Enticing in its careful world-building and graceful writing, this fantasy is highly recommended.” —Library Journal
