Book Concise History of the Language Sciences

Download or read book Concise History of the Language Sciences written by E.F.K. Koerner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents in a single volume a comprehensive history of the language sciences, from ancient times through to the twentieth century. While there has been a concentration on those traditions that have the greatest international relevance, a particular effort has been made to go beyond traditional Eurocentric accounts, and to cover a broad geographical spread. For the twentieth century a section has been devoted to the various trends, schools, and theoretical framework developed in Europe, North America and Australasia over the past seventy years. There has also been a concentration on those approaches in linguistic theory which can be expected to have some direct relevance to work being done at the beginning of the twenty-first century or those of which a knowledge is needed for the full understanding of the history of linguistic sciences through the last half of this century. The last section of this book reviews the applications of some of these findings. Based on the foundation provided by the award winning Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics this volume provides an excellent focal point of reference for anyone interested in the history of the language sciences.

Book The Church in the Shadow of the Mosque

Download or read book The Church in the Shadow of the Mosque written by Sidney H. Griffith and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-09 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid so much twenty-first-century talk of a "Christian-Muslim divide"--and the attendant controversy in some Western countries over policies toward minority Muslim communities--a historical fact has gone unnoticed: for more than four hundred years beginning in the mid-seventh century, some 50 percent of the world's Christians lived and worshipped under Muslim rule. Just who were the Christians in the Arabic-speaking milieu of Mohammed and the Qur'an? The Church in the Shadow of the Mosque is the first book-length discussion in English of the cultural and intellectual life of such Christians indigenous to the Islamic world. Sidney Griffith offers an engaging overview of their initial reactions to the religious challenges they faced, the development of a new mode of presenting Christian doctrine as liturgical texts in their own languages gave way to Arabic, the Christian role in the philosophical life of early Baghdad, and the maturing of distinctive Oriental Christian denominations in this context. Offering a fuller understanding of the rise of Islam in its early years from the perspective of contemporary non-Muslims, this book reminds us that there is much to learn from the works of people who seriously engaged Muslims in their own world so long ago. Book The Antichrist Revealed

Download or read book The Antichrist Revealed written by Paul Sides and published by Rav Sha'ul. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book I am going to clearly identify what has eluded mankind for 2,000 years... The identity of The Beast and the religion behind it. The Bible declares that all mankind will worship this Beast at the end and that has come true as it is the largest religion on Earth and this beast is a false image of the true Messiah who we have elevated in our hearts as God above Yahuah. The Creator, Yahuah, who revealed Himself in The Bible, warns us that His Word would be mistranslated and altered by Jewish scribes and twisted by Greeks into ‘another gospel’ that abolishes His Law and we would be presented with an “image” of the Messiah that is false called The Lawless One.This book is an all out Biblical assault and condemnation of this false messianic image known as The Antichrist... The Beast has been revealed and now we can “see” the Abomination of Desolation. Have you committed it! It is not too late to overcome it and rededicate the altar of your heart back to the one true God. In this book I am going to clearly identify what has eluded mankind for 2,000 years… The identity of the Beast and the religion behind it. The Bible declares that all mankind will worship the Beast at the end of 6,000 years. This has come true as the religion of this “beast” is the largest religion on Earth. The god of this “beast” is a false image of the true Messiah whom we have elevated in our hearts as God incarnate above Yahuah our Creator. The Beast (Greek: Θηρίον, Thērion) refers to two beasts described in the Book of Revelation as together they form the “god” and the religion behind this false god. The first beast comes from "out of the sea" and is given authority and power by the dragon. We are going to clearly identify the first beast and second beast and the dragon or ‘spirit behind the Beast’. The second beast comes from "out of the earth" and directs all peoples of the Earth to worship the first beast. The second beast is described in Revelation 13:11-18. The second beast is also referred to as the false prophet. The false prophet is not a physical man but rather the religious system that evolved around the worship of the first beast. This religious system is identified as Mystery Babylon b John and associated with Rome by Peter. The two beasts are aligned with the dragon in opposition to the Creator Yahuah and the Messiah Yahusha. This beastly system is another gospel built around the religion that evolved out of Babylon. As I explain in my first 3 books (Creation Cries Out!, Babylon the religion of the Beast, and Christianity the Great Deception) this religion is defined by its rituals which are opposed to the rituals defined by Yahuah in the Bible. Our Creator, Yahuah, who revealed Himself in The Bible, warns us that His word would be altered by translators and scribes then twisted by Greeks into ‘another gospel’. A false gospel that teaches that the Law was abolished and presents us with an “image” of the Messiah that is false. This false image of the true Messiah is called The Lawless One. You see, all humanity worships a false messiah and those who follow this false image of the true Messiah call him by a pagan name. They are addressing him by a name that literally means ‘Earthy Pig’ and gives glory to another god. They never knew his true name and they abolished the Law/Will of Yahuah and followed the Lawless One! Humanity has committed what the Bible calls the Transgression of Desolation which is the transgression of The Creator’s Feasts, Torah, and Sabbaths. This world-wide transgression causes the desolation of this planet and almost everyone on it. We call this the Great Tribulation when the Earth and its inhabitants must pay for abolishing the Law of Yahuah. The Great Tribulation is not caused by “the Antichrist committing the Abomination of Desolation” as we are taught in Christianity. The Great Tribulation is caused by the inhabitants of Earth committing the Rav Sha’ul Transgression of Desolation as we have believed in The Lawless One.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eschatology is generally understood to be the doctrine of last things, but understood rigorously eschatology actually speaks of the inauguration of a new, redeemed world to come and of the coming of God himself. To speak of eschatology in this way is to speak of the very possibility of the future in the radical sense, the future that is not a mere attenuated variation of presence. Eschatology speaks of a coming that comes only to pass away into a past; rather it speaks of the coming of the Holy itself, which is the very origin of time and is thus the event par excellence. This book attempts to make manifest the question that eschatology itself poses: that eschaton has something essential to do with the beginning. This work intervenes in contemporary debates on “postsecularism” and “the return to religion.” By introducing the question of eschatology anew, this book reintroduces the problem of transcendence that effectively calls into question the logic of sovereign power and rethinks the place of ‘‘religion’’ as an affirmation of what lies beyond, which does not function as the legitimizing principle of sovereignty in today’s world of mass consumption.

Download or read book Christ Is Time written by Mark James Edwards and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ Is Time: The Gospel according to Karl Barth (and the Red Hot Chili Peppers) welcomes you to the jungle of Barth's head-banging opus, the Church Dogmatics, with the beats, rhythms, and lyrics of Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Metallica, and more. Based on lectures at Princeton Seminary, Edwards distills Barth's treatment of key questions in philosophical and systematic theology, offering a playlist of greatest hits on trinity, Christology, prayer, and others. With the care of a scholar and the energy of a stack of Peaveys, Christ Is Time testifies that the eternal God "gives it away" as time through Jesus Christ. Let's face it: Karl's style is a bit Beastie. And since Depeche Mode can say it best, this just might be a match made in Nirvana. Go gaga.

Book The Rats of Hamelin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adam McCune
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers
  • Release : 2005-08-01
  • ISBN : 1575676958
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book The Rats of Hamelin written by Adam McCune and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In that scented, touch-filled Pipeworld, where notes speak clear as words, where connections are thick and countless, I felt the chaining up and circling together of other traces in my head. And as the Pipe amplified all sounds and souls, including mine, I heard my mind echoing: the mission is dead- No rat-kill, no reward, no liberation. No home, no Hofmanns, no Klara- It was all an illusion." The Rats of Hamelin blends history and fantasy to reshape the hazy legend of the pied piper. After six years as a piper's apprentice, Hannes sets out on the mission that will make him a master in the guild. His orders seem simple enough: rid Hamelin of a plague of rats and use the reward money for a charitable cause. Simple indeed, until he discovers that the real rats of Hamelin aren't the ones scurrying underfoot. Unsure who to count among his friends- the mayor's beautiful daughter, generous businessman, a precocious little girl? Hannes struggles against deadly enemies and thoughtless allies. Every step he takes comes down to a deceptively simple choice: when to show mercy and when to bring justice. Readers will be thrilled with this first novel by Adam and Keith McCune. This father-son team bring a wealth of linguistic and literary knowledge to bear on their retelling of the famous Pied Piper fairy tale. The story naturally lends itself to reflection on the themes of law and mercy, as well as the sometimes-complex nature of the relationship between fathers and sons.
