Book excerpt: Urban Fantasy Romance, With a Heaping Side of Hexes, Spells, and Magick! Last of the demon assassin witches, Roz, Jenna, and Colleen have escaped disaster so far, but their luck is running low. Demons strike in the midst of Colleen’s wedding, and Roz launches desperate measures. As she shape-shifts to keep one step ahead of evil, at least it takes her mind off her other problems. Personal ones. She burned through a couple of marriages and hooked up with a string of loser men before, after, and in between. Though she wants to be happy for Colleen, the jealousy bug bit deep and hasn’t let go. In Roz’s secret heart, she’s attracted to Ronin, one of the Daoine Sidhe. He’s so profanely beautiful she can barely breathe around him, but he’s also headstrong and arrogant. Not good partner material—unless she wants to end up dusting her heart off one more time. Ronin set his sights on Roz the day he met her, and he can’t get her out of his mind. Unfortunately, she’s so prickly getting close to her requires scheming. He casts an enchantment to lure her at Colleen’s wedding, but she senses the spell and calls him on it. Demons swarm out of the ether before he can come up with another strategy. Killing them trumps everything. Roz is used to calling the shots. So is Ronin. Sparks fly. Tempers run hot, right along with an attraction too heady to ignore. PRAISE FOR THE DEMON ASSASSIN SERIES: “This was a refreshing change of pace for me; I haven't read many paranormal books about witches, but I really enjoyed this one! The paranormal "creatures" involved in this story are witches, Sidhe fey, demons, changelings (new to me, but I adored Bubba!) and Unseelie fey. The characters were great, particularly the three main witches, Colleen, Jenna and Roz.” Goodreads review “Colleen is a witch but she's so much more than that as she is also one of three surviving demon hunting witches. Cursed by the Fae to hunt and trap demons and save the human world.” Goodreads review “This series was amazing. It is a talent and a skill very few authors have and Ann continues to use hers for good and the benefit of readers everywhere.” Goodreads review “This storyline was amazing!!! I have never read anything like it! I loved the use of all the different species featuring in this book.” Goodreads review Fans of the following books and series are known to enjoy this urban fantasy romance series: a kingdom of exiles a shade of vampire academy of magic dragon's gift accidentally in love attack by magic dragon's gift awakening dragon born in fire burning tower call of the dragon choose love covert fae crime of magic dragon's gift crimes against magic dark stranger the dream darkness bound dragons of the darkblood secret society druid enforcer ghostwater goddesss choice golden age greyriver shifters hotbloods hour of darkness house of darken iron and magic jinn's dominion junkyard druid Kate Daniels’ Magic Series master of magic dragon's gift natural mage natural witch obsidian son raised in fire rogues of magic shadow keeper shadow kissed space knight 4 twisted fate unchained undercover magic dragon's gift war god's mantle wheel of time wild hunger Keywords related to this urban fantasy romance series: Witch romance, Fantasy Books, Epic Urban Fantasy series, Werewolves and Shifters, Demons, Animals & Nature, Popular Series, Paranormal Fantasy Books, Top Rated Books, Tricks, Fantasy Omnibus, Spells & Charms, Romance Books, Backcountry, Fantasy Romance Books, Essential Reads, Epic Fantasy, Omnibus Bundle, Paranormal Romance Series, Adventure Books, Mythology and Folklore, Celtic gods, Fae, Changelings, Top Rated Fantasy Collection With Shapeshifters, Fantasy Bundle, Heroine, Supernatural and Occult, Sword And Sorcery, Shifter Romance, Fantasy Stories, Witch Series, Fantasy, Witch Omnibus, Best Rated Omnibus, Omnibus Collection, Paranormal Romance Books, Magical Adventures.

Book Legends and Lore of Southern Illinois

Download or read book Legends and Lore of Southern Illinois written by John W. Allen and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2010-02-24 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s and ‘60s, John W. Allen told the people of southern Illinois about themselves—about their region, its history, and its folkways—in his series of newspaper articles, “It Happened in Southern Illinois.” Each installment of the series depicted a single item of interest—a town, a building, an enterprise, a person, an event, a custom. Originally published in 1963, Legends & Lore of Southern Illinois brings together a selection of these articles preserving a valuable body of significant local history and cultural lore. During territorial times and early statehood, southern Illinois was the most populous and most influential part of the state. But the advent of the steamboat and the building of the National Road made the lands to the west and north more easily accessible, and the later settlers struck out for the more expansive and fertile prairies. The effect of this movement was to isolate that section of the state known as Egypt and halt its development, creating what Allen termed “an historical eddy.” Bypassed as it was by the main current of westward expansion and economic growth, its culture changed very slowly. Methods, practices, and the tools of the pioneer continued in use for a long time. The improved highways and better means of communication of the twentieth century brought a marked change upon the region, and daily life no longer differed materially from that of other areas. Against such a cultural and historical backdrop, Mr. Allen wrote these sketches of the people of southern Illinois—of their folkways and beliefs, their endeavors, successes, failures, and tragedies, and of the land to which they came. There are stories here of slaves and their masters, criminals, wandering peddlers, politicians, law courts and vigilantes, and of boat races on the rivers. Allen also looks at the region’s earlier history, describing American Indian ruins, monuments, and artifacts as well as the native population’s encounters with European settlers. Many of the vestiges of the region’s past culture have all but disappeared, surviving only in museums and in the written record. This new paperback edition of Legends & Lore of Southern Illinois brings that past culture to life again in Allen’s descriptive, engaging style.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: She could almost see the people gathered around a fire, listening with rapt attention while the storyteller’s rich voice recounted the love tale of Sarah, a legend in her own time... At fourteen, Sarah is an accomplished pickpocket who knows all the back streets and boltholes of the town of Monn. She steers clear of Brother Parker and his Church of True Faith, knows better than to enter the Inn of The Honest Keeper, and avoids the attentions of Butch, the Miller’s son, as best she can. The one bright spot in Sarah’s day is listening to the storyteller’s tales of the magically easy lives of the Old People—and if, as darkness falls, one of the wealthier listeners happens to be so intent on the storyteller’s voice that he becomes careless of his own purse, well, so much the better. Inspired by the storyteller’s narratives, Sarah often imagines her own life as the stuff of legend for some future troubadour. But even such daydreams can’t prepare her for becoming embroiled with a witchy Phile—an agent of the devil, come in search of the Old People’s hidden secrets. How could Sarah have known that picking the wrong pocket would strand her in the middle of a power struggle among Brother Parker, the Governor, and the encroaching Phile spies? A new edition of Leslie Gadallah's classic science fiction novel, originally published by Del Rey Books as The Loremasters.

But now in a time when being different brings danger, she finds herself at the mercy of the opinion of her neighbors. Although she is being courted by two men, can she rely on either of them to defend her from the storm that swirls around her, as the Village is caught up in a maelstrom of accusations? What happened in Salem over three hundred years ago? Was it an outbreak of mass hysteria fueled by superstition? Were there truly witches among the pious Puritans who made their home in the New World to establish a kingdom of God on earth? Or did someone execute bitter vengeance against their oppressors and bring destruction on the innocent? L. M. Roth, author of the Quest For the Kingdom series, The Princess Who series, and Battleground: Elijah and the War With Jezebel, weaves a spellbinding tale of the mysterious incidents that occurred in Salem more than three centuries ago. With insight and historical detail the Salem Witch Trials come vividly to life, and the blood of those wronged cries out for justice even now.

Book excerpt: Practical Magic meets Gone Girl in Ava Morgyn's next dark, spellbinding novel about a woman who is more than a witch - she's a hunter. Piers Corbin has always had an affinity for poisonous things - plants and men. From the pokeweed berries she consumed at age five that led to the accidental death of a stranger, to the husband whose dark proclivities have become... concerning, poison has been at the heart of her story. But when she fakes her own death in an attempt to escape her volatile marriage and goes to stay with her estranged great aunt in the mountains, she realizes her predilection is more than a hunger - it’s a birthright. Piers comes from a long line of poison eaters - Bane Witches – women who ingest deadly plants and use their magic to rid the world of evil men. Piers sets out to earn her place in her family’s gritty but distinguished legacy, all while working at her Aunt Myrtle’s cafe and perpetuating a flirtation with the local, well-meaning sheriff to allay his suspicions on the body count she’s been leaving in her wake. But soon she catches the attention of someone else, a serial killer operating in the area. And that only means one thing - it’s time to feed. In Ava Morgyn’s dark, thrilling novel, The Bane Witch, a very little poison can do a world of good.
